A release order is the beginning of processing—not a pickup time.

Court paperwork must reach the jail and be processed before the person physically leaves custody. Served-time releases and other releases follow facility-specific procedures, so use the current custody record and call the holding facility for a time-sensitive pickup.

Step by step

Plan a San Diego County jail release without guessing.

  1. Confirm the current custody record

    Use Who’s in Jail to confirm the person is still in Sheriff custody and note the assigned facility.

  2. Identify the release type

    A court-ordered release, bail release, served-time release, and transfer are different processes. Use the case record or facility information to understand which applies.

  3. Call before arranging transportation

    For a time-sensitive pickup, call (619) 409-5000 and select the current facility. Ask where the public release point is located.

  4. Bring practical essentials

    Plan for weather, a charged phone, transportation, and clothing if the person may need it. Keep the pickup flexible until the facility confirms release.

  5. Confirm property and unused funds

    Normal accepted personal property and clothing are stored during custody. Unused account funds are returned at release under the Sheriff’s current process.

Property from the arresting agency

The jail stores property it accepts during booking. Large or bulky items may remain with the agency that made the arrest instead of entering the detention facility.

  • Ask the arresting agency where rejected bulky property was taken.
  • Use the jail for property held with the booking.
  • Do not arrive at a police property room without confirming its process and hours.

Worth knowing

Release into another program or agency

Some people leave a jail for treatment, another law-enforcement agency, or an approved alternative-custody program rather than a public-lobby pickup.

  • A transfer is not the same as release to the community.
  • CPAC decides eligibility for its own programs.
