Find someone in San Diego County custody

Sources reviewed

Seven active adult Sheriff jail facilities; county orientation and other custodians are separate.

  1. Find the current housing

Save the booking number and module; call 619-409-5000 if the record is unclear.

  2. Choose the correct service

Onsite visits, SmartInmate video, printed email and commissary use different processes.

  3. Confirm the final trip

Check the module reservation, early arrival, parking or final transport and pickup location.

PART 01

Find custody and choose the facility

Identity, current housing and the seven adult facilities.

Find the person and preserve the current record

Use Who’s in Jail for adults held by the San Diego County Sheriff. Enter at least 2 letters of both the first and last name, complete the human-verification prompt, then open the matching last name. Compare identity carefully. Keep the exact booked name, date of birth, booking number, current facility and housing module, case number, court date and any bail information shown. A booking number identifies this custody episode; it is not the court case number.

  1. If no record appears, check spelling and another known name. A recent arrest may still be with the arresting agency, in transport or in booking. Ask that agency whether custody has transferred.
  2. If Look Up is disabled, close and reopen the browser. Refresh a repeated verification challenge; the locator suggests a hard refresh with Ctrl+F5 on Windows or Command+Shift+R on Mac and a current browser.
  3. Call 619-409-5000, select the facility if known, and provide the name, birth date and arrest date. Ask whether the person is still in county custody and where they are housed. A missing record alone does not prove release.
  4. Check again before a visit, mailing or deposit. Housing and eligibility may change after booking, court or medical movement.

The locator currently warns that release dates may be inaccurate while records are recalculated. Confirm a pickup directly with custody staff. Use the Sheriff’s custody-notification information to register for supported release or transfer alerts; keep contact details current and verify an alert before traveling.

Seven adult facilities: housing, visiting and intake

All 7 facilities below currently appear in the Sheriff’s active directory. Call 619-409-5000 and choose the named facility. An intake location is not a promise that the person will stay there. The three Alta Road jails share a street number but have different suites, lobbies and schedules. Rock Mountain is not the state’s Richard J. Donovan prison at 480 Alta Road.

These instructions do not govern city police lockups, Chula Vista Police custody, juvenile facilities, state prison, the federal Metropolitan Correctional Center or immigration detention. Follow the actual custodian’s process. A proposed replacement for Vista does not mean the current jail has closed. Send ordinary jail mail to the separate Santee Mail Processing Center described below, not to these street addresses.

LOCATE

Start with the live Sheriff record—not the nearest jail.

San Diego County uses one Sheriff custody system across seven detention facilities. The arresting police department does not decide where the person will remain housed. Search the person’s name, then use the facility shown on the current booking record.

The useful result

A name is only the start.

The booking number and assigned facility are what make the next step reliable.

  1. 1Search the legal name
  2. 2Open the matching booking
  3. 3Save the facility and booking number

Before you start

Have these details ready.

Use the current booking information for this person and this facility.

01

Legal name

Enter at least two characters in both the first-name and last-name fields. Try the person’s full booked name before using a shorter spelling.

02

Approximate arrest time

A very recent arrest may not appear until booking has been entered and processed.

03

A place to save the result

Write down the booking number, assigned facility, housing location, case number, and listed release information.

Step by step

From an arrest to the correct San Diego jail.

The search result is the handoff point between the arresting agency, the Sheriff’s jail system, and the court.

  1. Search the current custody record

Use the official Who’s in Jail tool with the person’s booked first and last name.

  2. Open the matching booking

Confirm the person using the booking details. Do not rely on name alone when more than one record appears.

  3. Record the assigned facility

The result can show the booking number, jail, housing, arrest information, bail, release information, case numbers, and charges.

  4. Use the facility for every next step

Visiting, mail, and some in-person procedures depend on the current housing location. Check again before traveling because transfers can occur.

Know the limits

What the search can—and cannot—tell you.

These details apply to the San Diego County Sheriff system and may change after a transfer.

Search minimum
2 characters

Required in both the first-name and last-name fields.

System maintenance
Wednesday at noon

The Sheriff says the interruption normally lasts about 30 minutes.

Custody information
619-409-5000

Call when the record is unclear or a time-sensitive release needs confirmation.

Court dates
Use the case location

The booking record may show court information; Jail411’s court directory helps route the courthouse and business office.

Common problem

If no matching record appears

Check spelling, try a shorter legal name, and allow time for a recent arrest to complete booking. If the arrest happened in Chula Vista, also follow the separate Chula Vista Police Department custody note shown by the Sheriff search. For an urgent answer, call jail information.

  • Do not assume the person was released solely because no result appears.
  • Do not drive to a jail until the assigned facility is confirmed.
  • Use the arresting agency only for the police report or arrest investigation—not for jail housing questions.

Worth knowing

What to do with the booking number

The booking number is the safest identifier for later tasks because names can be shared or entered differently. Keep it with the exact booked name and current facility.

  • Use it when addressing mail.
  • Use it to confirm the correct person before depositing money.
  • Keep it available when calling the jail or discussing the court case.

Check before you leave.

One last confirmation can save a wasted trip.

  • Current facilityRecheck Who’s in Jail for transfers.
  • Today’s availabilityConfirm the visit, release, or service is still available.
  • Required detailsBring the booked name, booking number, identification, and confirmation.
  • Exact entranceUse the facility or office address for this task—not a mailing address.
