JAIL411 / FAMILY FIELD GUIDE

The Lew Sterrett complex. A guide for your family.

Sources reviewed

For the Dallas County adult jail complex: North Tower, West Tower and Suzanne Lee Kays (South Tower). Jail411 is an independent guide. Live custody records, approvals and payments remain with the responsible agency or provider.

  1. Confirm the record

Save the book-in number, current housing and court information.

  2. Choose your next task

Prepare a visit, arrange communication or get help with a concern.

  3. Plan beyond today

Track court dates, property, release transportation and ongoing support.

PART 01

Find someone

Start with the record and the right building.

Find the person first

Open the Dallas County Jail Lookup with the person’s booked name and date of birth. Match the identity before using a record; a similar name alone is not enough.

  1. Save the book-in number. You will use it for mail, deposits and calls about the person.
  2. Record the current tower and housing information. Check again before travelling; an earlier address or screenshot may no longer describe where they are held.
  3. Keep the case number and court alongside the custody record. A jail record and a court docket answer different questions.

No result? Recheck spelling and the date of birth, then contact jail information at 214-761-9025. Have the arrest date and arresting agency ready. Ask whether booking is still being processed or another agency holds the person. Dallas County does not publish a guaranteed posting delay on the sources reviewed.

Jail411 does not display a live custody feed. The official lookup opens separately so you can return here with the record.

PART 02

Plan a visit

Approval, schedules, identification and access.

The in-person visiting schedule

Choose the day using the incarcerated person’s surname
SurnameDaysVisitingLast processing
A–LMonday & Thursday7–9 p.m.8:30 p.m.
M–ZTuesday & Friday7–9 p.m.8:30 p.m.
All surnamesSaturday & Sunday8 a.m.–2 p.m.1:30 p.m.

Signup begins 30 minutes before opening. Standard visits last 20 minutes: one per day and two per week. A group may include two adults and two minors, four people total.

Approval comes first. The person in jail lists up to five adults on their visitor card; changes are allowed once every 90 days. Ask them to confirm you are listed before making the trip. Children under 17 do not count toward those five adults.

Children, long-distance and hospital visits

Children under 17 visit on weekends with a parent or legal guardian on the visitor card; bring guardianship proof where applicable. Visitors 17 or younger must be accompanied by an adult 18 or older.

Residents more than 75 miles from Dallas city limits may receive a one-time 40-minute visit after residence verification; later visits are 20 minutes. Hospital visits are ordinarily unavailable; declining health may qualify for a specially approved exception.

What to bring—and leave behind

Photo ID: state driver’s license/ID, passport, military or immigration photo ID, or Mexican consular ID. A current temporary license needs another photo ID.

Clothing and belongings: no sleeveless, revealing, sheer, torn or tight/spandex clothing; no open-toed shoes, short skirts, institutional-style khaki/green clothing or nonreligious hats. Leave phones, smartwatches, bags, recording devices, tobacco and lighters outside.

If you do not have ordinary photo identification

Dallas offers a jail-visitation photo card for eligible U.S. citizens 18 and older for $5. Bring three original documents from this list: Social Security card, school ID, work ID, birth certificate, expired Texas DPS ID or Texas DPS renewal slip.

At Lew Sterrett, follow the orange floor line to the probation-check area. The Sheriff’s FAQ lists processing Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–3:30 p.m.; confirm before travelling. This identification card is separate from the approved visitor list and does not itself authorize a visit.

Infant supplies and recent incarceration: conflicting instructions

The visiting page permits a small diaper bag with infant supplies but later prohibits blankets, strollers and glass bottles. The newer handbook also prohibits blankets and bottles. Ask 214-761-9025 which feeding and changing items staff will admit.

The webpage bars visitors jailed in Dallas County during the previous six months; the handbook describes a marriage-proof exception. Obtain confirmation before relying on that exception.

Plan where to secure your phone and bag before arriving by bus or rideshare. Public locker availability has not been verified. Write the book-in number and return-travel details on paper.

Set up a video visit

Dallas uses SmartInmate for on-site and remote video visits. Register with government photo ID; registrants must be at least 17. Approval generally takes 72 hours, and the jail requires visits to be scheduled 72 hours ahead. Allow time for both steps.

Video visits have a different schedule from in-person visits
OptionPublished arrangement
On-site terminal20 minutes; two visits per week. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 8 a.m.–8:30 p.m.; none Wednesday.
Remote video20 minutes; no published weekly count limit. Available slots and the price appear in the booking system.
Children under 17Weekend video visits only.
  1. Complete the account and contact setup.
  2. Choose Visits, the person, local/on-site or remote, then a time. Review the cost and confirmation before booking.
  3. Use Chrome, including on Apple devices; the provider does not support Safari. Test camera, microphone and internet in a quiet, well-lit place.
  4. Join 10 minutes early. Arriving late reduces the remaining time; it does not move the end time.

Visits are monitored and recorded. Disruptive or inappropriate conduct can end the session, and jail operations may force rescheduling. Keep the appointment details if a session fails; see refund and support guidance.

Arrange access before the trip

Contact Dallas County’s ADA coordinator at 214-653-7970 or Fire.Marshal@DallasCounty.org about accommodations. Also give jail information your visiting date and tower so staff can address the actual arrival arrangements.

  • Describe the barrier: mobility equipment, a step-free route, hearing or communication support, or difficulty standing in line.
  • Ask for an exact entrance and procedure. The county’s general parking listing does not establish an accessible path from every garage.
  • Record the answer: contact name, date and the agreed arrangement. A general ADA inquiry does not replace visitor approval.

Inside the jail, the handbook describes video-relay access on Smart terminals and TTY equipment for deaf or hard-of-hearing people. They can ask a supervisor verbally or through a written request. Families should identify the communication need when contacting staff.

Stay connected

Accounts, calls, mail, money and packages.

Create a SmartInmate account
  1. Register with your full name, email and phone number. Enter the verification code and choose a username and password.
  2. Upload identification under My Account when required. Use a clear image with all four corners visible and a name matching the account.
  3. Under Contacts, choose “Find an Incarcerated Individual.” Search by name, identifier or facility and request the connection.
  4. The person accepts at a kiosk; facility approval may also be required. A pending contact request does not mean a visit is approved.

Already used this phone number? Try the password/username recovery process. The provider allows one active account per number; another registration may not solve the problem.

Before paying, read the product name. A commissary deposit will not automatically fund a call, and a phone balance will not pay bond.

Sources: SmartInmate account setup · Dallas phone provider · Trust deposits · Bond desk

Calls, failed sessions and refunds

The current Sheriff’s phone page and December 2025 handbook identify SmartInmate. Older Dallas FAQ references to earlier calling arrangements should not be used to choose a provider.

Where offered for the Dallas account, prepaid calling is attached to your phone number; a PIN account belongs to the incarcerated person. Check the account type, recipient and displayed charges before funding.

When calls will not connect

Check the exact funded number, available balance and account type. Review spam/unknown-caller blocking; some internet-based phone services are incompatible. Changing your contact number does not automatically move the old balance. For account help or to block an individual, call 727-349-1561.

Unused money or a failed video visit

SmartInmate’s refund policy distinguishes money from service credits:

  • Eligible prepaid refunds require at least $5; request through the account’s refund page. The provider says processing typically takes 30 days to the original payment method.
  • Messaging/photo credits are nonrefundable; they do not expire.
  • PIN funds belong to the incarcerated person and are released to them.
  • A video reservation hold should release within an hour if the visit does not occur. For a technical failure, give support the date, time, person and what happened.

Keep a receipt and reference number for each payment. Provider support can resolve account issues; jail restrictions or housing availability require jail staff.

Use the right mailing address

Ordinary personal mail

Seminole, FL 33775-9226
Legal / confidential mail
[Full booked name] #[Book-in number]
PO Box 660334
Dallas, TX 75266

Include your name and return address. Personal mail is scanned; write on one side of each page. It is not forwarded after release. Originals are destroyed after 90 days rather than returned, so send copies of irreplaceable items.

Before sealing: remove staples, tape, glue, stickers, loose stationery and stamps. No Polaroids or photos larger than 8 × 10 inches. Greeting cards must not exceed 8 × 10 or contain padding or music. The jail also restricts colored crayon, marker and pencil content.

Books must come from a publisher or bookstore. Do not treat a family parcel as an approved book shipment or care package. Attorneys should use the legal-mail address or the designated privileged SmartInmate process.

If delivery is rejected, retain the envelope/notice, check the name and book-in number, and identify the specific content rule before resending. Confidential correspondence does not belong at the Florida processing address.

Sources: Mail and legal-mail rules · Original-mail retention

Put money on the trust account

Have the person’s full booked name and book-in number ready. Dallas lists Access Corrections online/app deposits, telephone deposits at 866-345-1884, lobby kiosks and retail cash deposits through CashPayToday.

  1. Select Dallas County and match the person’s identifier before entering payment details.
  2. Review the actual fee and amount at checkout; the method can affect the charge.
  3. Save the receipt, confirmation number and account selected. If a deposit is missing, these details let the provider trace the transaction.

Do not mail checks or money orders for commissary deposits. Dallas’s bond desk has different payment rules; permission to use a money order for bond does not apply to the trust account.

If the person has little money: Inmate Services describes correspondence supplies for people with less than $5 in the trust account. Hygiene kits can be requested from the commissary-cart attendant. They should ask staff for the available supplies rather than wait for a family deposit.

Order through the approved program

The county identifies Access Securepak as its approved care-package vendor. Its Dallas program directs customers to Access Securepak; telephone ordering/help is 800-546-6283.

  1. Choose Texas → Dallas County, not a Dallas County in another state.
  2. Confirm the person is eligible and review the current Dallas catalog, spending limit, delivery information and total cost.
  3. Keep the order number. If the person transfers or leaves custody, contact the vendor promptly about the undelivered order.

The county’s older package leaflet gives inconsistent English/Spanish ordering limits. We have not presented its $75 figure or weekly delivery timetable as a verified current guarantee. The current program’s checkout rules control the purchase.

A vendor package, an ordinary letter and a trust-account deposit are different transactions. Do not assemble a home care parcel using the personal-mail address.

Parking is first-come, first-served. The currently linked 2025 revised rate sheet lists C/D/Lot F at $4 for 11–60 minutes; 61–90 minutes: $5/$5/$4; 91+ minutes: $6/$5/$4. The first 10 minutes are free. Night/weekend: $3/$3/$4. Reviewed September 28, 2026. The PDF says all three operate 24/7, conflicting with the webpage hours above. Confirm current charges and vehicle retrieval with ABM at 214-761-9581.

Plan backward from the check-in cutoff. Allow time for parking, the walk, security and the correct tower—not just the driving estimate. On the return, make sure the car remains accessible after the visit. Ask about the accessible entrance before committing to a garage.

PART 05

Care & support

Health concerns, complaints and help inside.

Medical and mental health concerns

Parkland provides physical and behavioral health care in the Dallas County jail. For family concerns, its jail page directs callers to the Sheriff at 214-653-2621. Jail information is 214-761-9025.

  1. Identify the person: booked name, book-in number and housing if known.
  2. Explain what staff need to act on: symptoms, last contact, medication name/dose, prescribing clinician and the specific concern. State immediately if you believe there is an urgent risk of self-harm or a medical emergency.
  3. Ask where the information is being routed. Note the contact, time and follow-up instructions. Parkland’s public page says it cannot provide family members patient information; supplying a concern does not guarantee a medical update.

People inside should alert the floor officer immediately for emergencies; nonurgent concerns can be submitted to nursing through a written request. Medication must go through medical approval. The Sheriff’s FAQ says prescription/reading glasses can be delivered to the appropriate building control; confirm the destination before bringing them.

Health service fees and ability to pay

Dallas says treatment is provided regardless of ability to pay. Its policy lists $10 assessments for certain services, including a family inquiry that results in a licensed assessment, while exempting several services such as intake, crisis stabilization, ordered follow-up and medication. Deductions do not reduce the account below $6.

A fee dispute can be submitted in writing to the Parkland site administrator with the assessment date and explanation. Do not delay reporting an urgent concern because of a possible fee.

The person’s own grievance: the handbook allows a Smart kiosk/tablet submission or a sealed written form marked “Grievance,” generally within seven days of the event. Keep the submission date and any response. A family phone call is not a substitute for that process.

For a written complaint, organize the person’s identifier, dates, location, what happened, earlier reports and the remedy requested. Keep a copy and a reference number. TCJS handles county-jail standards matters, but lists limits: it does not investigate criminal acts, PREA complaints, excessive force, staff rudeness or disagreements with a judge or attorney. Use the relevant reporting or legal channel for those issues.

Sources: Sheriff contact directory / PREA · Internal Affairs number · Jail grievance procedure · TCJS scope and written complaints

Support while the person is inside

Program requests can be made through the jail tablet or kiosk. The county lists Dallas College GED instruction, Dallas ISD education for 17-year-olds, Alcoholics Anonymous, anger-management and parenting classes, Parkland medication-assisted treatment, and Volunteers of America programs including Resolana for women and reentry work for men.

Eligibility and a request do not guarantee immediate placement. Ask which program is running in the person’s housing and whether there is a waiting list. The Sheriff’s program page marks TORI as on hold; it should not be treated as an available class.

PART 06

Court & release

Counsel, bond, belongings and the next steps.

Court dates and finding counsel

Use the Dallas County court portal with the case number from the record. Confirm the court, hearing date, time and location; confidential or sealed information may not appear publicly. Criminal case records and jail housing records should be checked separately.

County Clerk · criminal courts
214-653-7099
Public Defender
214-653-3550

A person who cannot afford counsel should tell the judge and request appointment; eligibility is assessed by the court. An appointed lawyer may be a public defender or a private attorney, so confirm the assigned lawyer’s name before calling an office about the case.

The Public Defender’s office is at 133 N. Riverfront Boulevard, 9th floor, Dallas, TX 75207. Have the case number and assigned court ready when trying to reach counsel.

If the person is supervised by Pretrial Services

For defendants on a personal bond supervised by Pretrial Services, the county instructs them to report to that office 45 minutes before the hearing. This is not a universal arrival rule for every jail visitor or court spectator. Check the court-setting notice and contact the assigned attorney one or two days beforehand.

Pretrial Services: 214-875-2302, Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–4:30 p.m., Frank Crowley Courts Building, 133 N. Riverfront Boulevard. Arrange child care and time for security screening.

Posting a bond

Dallas County bond desk · 24 hours, daily
111 W. Commerce Street
Dallas, TX 75202

The person posting must be an adult with accepted identification. Dallas lists cash, cashier’s checks and money orders payable to Dallas County. Checks/money orders must come from a local Dallas–Fort Worth financial institution and include the purchase receipt. Credit/debit cards and Western Union are not accepted.

  1. Confirm the exact person, case and bond instructions before obtaining a payment instrument.
  2. Bring identification, the book-in/case numbers, payment and any required receipt to the bond desk.
  3. Keep proof of posting. Ask jail staff how to confirm release readiness and whether any additional processing or hold remains.

Posting and release are separate steps; no guaranteed pickup time is published in the reviewed instructions. Bond refunds are handled by the County or District Clerk, not the Sheriff’s deposit system.

Pretrial Services warns that bonds are handled in person. Do not pay a caller by gift card, wire or Cash App to “clear” a bond. Verify a claimed Pretrial request at 214-875-2302.

Sources: Sheriff bond payment instructions · Pretrial bond scam warning

Collect authorized property

Property release is listed daily, 10 a.m.–8 p.m. The incarcerated person must authorize it on a signed form. If housing has been assigned, obtain the necessary authorization through that location; return the form to the Lew Sterrett front-lobby control center for processing.

Bring accepted photo ID: state driver’s license, Texas DPS ID, jail-visitation ID, passport or qualifying U.S. government/alien-registration photo ID. A temporary driver’s license needs another photo ID.

Know what is being released: after vault processing, property is released together; clothing uses a separate form. The handbook allows an exchange for court clothing against the stored set—do not send courtroom clothes through ordinary mail.

Before travelling, confirm that the signed authorization is ready, that you are the named recipient and where to report. A property request is not a release order. For an item held as evidence, first establish which agency holds it; the jail property procedure may not be the applicable route.

Sources: Property release procedure and ID · Court clothing

Make a release-day plan

Arrange the ride once jail staff can confirm the person’s release status. A paid bond, ended hearing or missing lookup result alone should not be treated as an instruction to wait at a particular door.

  1. Confirm the handoff. Ask the jail for the actual pickup point and how readiness will be communicated. A current public release-door location and guaranteed processing time were not established in the sources reviewed.
  2. Prepare the basics. Agree on a meeting point, reachable phone number, transport home, weather-appropriate clothing and somewhere to stay.
  3. Gather the paperwork. Keep release papers, the next court date, lawyer contact and any supervision instructions together.
  4. Resolve remaining accounts. Ask about property and trust funds; handle SmartInmate prepaid refunds separately. PIN funds belong to the released person.
  5. Plan ongoing care. Discuss medication and follow-up needs with the appropriate care staff before the transition where possible.

Custody-change notifications: Texas IVSS-Counties provides registration for county custody/court alerts. The Attorney General’s current notice says administration moved to the Governor’s office on September 1, 2026. Use the current official notification entry point and verify that the relevant person/county is available; we have not confirmed Dallas enrollment for an individual record.

Facility record / Texas

North Tower Detention Facility is a county or city jail in Dallas, Dallas County, Texas. It has a rated capacity of 3,292 and a reported population of 2,364 — about 72% occupancy, as recorded in the February 2026 federal dataset. By capacity it is the 3rd-largest of the 255 county or city jail records listed for Texas with a published capacity. It is one of 19 correctional facilities in Dallas County.

Jail411 does not hold custody records. A listing here does not mean anyone is held at this address. Confirm the person’s location with the responsible agency before you travel, send money, or pay for a service.

Finding someone held here

Use the county system for a recent arrest. A state corrections search covers people in state custody. It generally will not list someone booked into a county jail this week. Bookings, bail, release, and visiting are all handled by Dallas County Sheriff’s Office.

Clear boundaries.

Jail411 is an independent information resource for families and friends. We are not a government agency, jail operator, law firm or live custody-records service.

Can Jail411 tell me if someone is in custody right now?

No. Jail411 does not hold live custody records. Use the official locator for the county, state, federal or ICE system that has the person; start here if you do not know which.

Does posting bond mean the person comes home?

Not always. A probation or parole hold, another county's warrant or an immigration detainer can keep someone in custody after bond is posted. Ask the jail what holds are on the booking before you pay.

What should I confirm before visiting?

The person's current facility, the visiting schedule, approval requirements, accepted identification and arrival instructions. Check the facility page and its official sources before you travel.

What if I find something that needs correcting?

Send us the page and the detail that needs attention. Include the official source when you have one. Do not send private booking documents or other sensitive personal information.
