    Use the official locator or call 925-551-6500; confirm PFN and housing.

  2. Book before travel

    Use the Alameda reservation portal and obtain any required approval.

  3. Use the correct address/account

    Ordinary mail goes to Pigeonly; legal/publications and account types differ.

  4. Plan the return

    Check Wheels Route 1, actual release clearance and clinical follow-up.

Find the right facility

Find the person, PFN and current custody status

Santa Rita information: 925-551-6500. Use the Sheriff’s inmate locator, match the name and identifying details, and save the Person File Number (PFN), booking details, housing, court dates and case numbers. PFN is needed for visits, mail and money. Ask the arresting agency where it delivered the person if a recent arrest is not found.

  1. Enter the displayed verification characters exactly. Enable JavaScript. The official FAQ says a system error may require trying again later; an expired session requires a fresh search.
  2. Check spelling and use the soundex checkbox for similar last names. Wildcards are not supported. A disabled View Aliases button means no other name is displayed; a disabled View Details button means the listed person is not in custody in this system.
  3. If the result is missing or unclear, call with full name and date of birth. Ask whether intake is incomplete, the person is at court or hospital, released or transferred. A missing search result alone does not establish release.
  4. Confirm the current housing unit and visit eligibility again before travel or payment. Ask about every hold and case; a court order, bail amount or pending-release status is not a completed physical release.

Is the sheriff's office the same as the jail?

No. The Alameda County Sheriff operates Santa Rita Jail, but Sheriff headquarters and service locations have different addresses and purposes. Open the county jail page for custody and family-service information.

How do I find out which department made the arrest?

Check the citation or booking paperwork, ask where the incident happened, or call the likely city department. Dublin and unincorporated communities use Sheriff services; BART, campuses and freeways have separate agencies.

Can these agencies tell me if someone is in custody?

The arresting agency can tell you where the person was taken. For current Alameda County custody, use the Sheriff locator. A very recent arrest may not appear until booking or transfer is complete.
