Is the sheriff's office the same as the jail?

No. The Alameda County Sheriff operates Santa Rita Jail, but Sheriff headquarters and service locations have different addresses and purposes. Open the county jail page for custody and family-service information.

How do I find out which department made the arrest?

Check the citation or booking paperwork, ask where the incident happened, or call the likely city department. Dublin and unincorporated communities use Sheriff services; BART, campuses and freeways have separate agencies.

Can these agencies tell me if someone is in custody?

The arresting agency can tell you where the person was taken. For current Alameda County custody, use the Sheriff locator. A very recent arrest may not appear until booking or transfer is complete.
