SCSD directs family custody inquiries to its Records divisions: Nashua Street 617-635-1100 ext. 3005; South Bay 617-635-1000 ext. 2017. The reviewed Sheriff pages do not supply a live public booking search. A commercial search result or a court docket is not confirmation of today’s housing.

1. Have the full legal name, spelling variants, date of birth, arrest date and arresting agency ready. Give sensitive identifiers only to the official desk that needs them.
2. Ask whether the person is in SCSD custody, the physical facility, identification number, unit, and whether an intake, court trip, transfer or release is still being processed. Ask which desk can answer visit eligibility or release questions.
3. Write down the confirmed name/ID exactly for mail, the current unit for the schedule, the case number and court if supplied, and when you checked.
4. If neither desk finds a recent arrest, contact the arresting agency for the receiving institution. A spelling mismatch, incomplete admission, another county, state custody or federal custody can require a different search. A missing record does not establish release.

For case dates, use MassCourts: select the court department/division and search by case number or name. Check the docket, event date and location with counsel; protected or unavailable online cases require the clerk. Court status and jail housing are separate questions.

The Sheriff’s FAQ describes county sentences under 2.5 years; the HOC page says 2.5 years or less. These descriptions are not a rule for predicting a person’s placement. Classification, court commitments and transfers control the current location.

The Community Corrections Center, 33 Bradston Street, 617-635-1000 ext. 2500, is a separate program contact, not the HOC visiting address. Boston Police holding, Massachusetts DOC prisons and Boston Pre-Release Center records, DYS youth custody, federal/ICE facilities and Suffolk County in New York do not inherit this guide. Older HOC HTML still lists immigration units; the currently linked schedule does not. Those old rows do not establish a current ICE housing service or current immigration visit rules.

South Bay’s currently linked chart was revised December 29, 2023. It is the chart still supplied by the homepage at this review, not a newly issued 2026 schedule. Monday is marked “No Visits”; Tuesday is marked “Video Visits.” Times below are Boston local time. A dash means the source cell is blank and does not identify an appointment window. The PDF does not explain its asterisks; do not import the old HTML footnote or assume an asterisk permits children.

Use the resident’s confirmed unit, then ask Visits to confirm the offered appointment, visit type, start time and check-in deadline. Court, medical restrictions, discipline or unit changes can affect an individual visit. The older HOC webpage has a different matrix and immigration labels; those rows are not mixed into this chart.

Keep children supervised throughout the property; do not leave them in a vehicle. An ill or disruptive child can end a visit. Neither current public set supplies a complete infant-supply allowance: ask about diapers, wipes, a clear bottle, formula, baby food, blanket, stroller and car seat individually. The child’s age does not remove the original-document requirement.

Leave phones, cameras, bags, wallets, money and other unauthorized items outside the visiting room; HOC directs visitors to lobby lockers. Confirm locker availability, size and payment before relying on one. Search refusal or intoxication can prevent admission. At HOC, remain seated separately, keep hands visible, do not kiss or pass anything. Ask for a supervisor and the written reason if entry is denied.

The HOC chart publishes Tuesday video slots of 20 minutes. It does not publish a family enrollment link, booking lead time, cancellation deadline or Nashua unit video matrix. SCSD’s official 2025 operations presentation identifies Securus; the Massachusetts no-cost report records Suffolk video and electronic communications. Confirm the current service for the person’s facility with Visits before selecting an appointment.

1. Use Securus registration and select the Massachusetts facility. Do not choose Suffolk County, New York. Use your own accurate identity and contact details, and complete the requested profile/ID verification.
2. For scheduled Video Connect, request facility access and wait for approval. Search by the confirmed name/ID, choose an offered remote session, check the local date/time and keep the confirmation. Provider registration does not replace the jail’s visitor approval.
3. Securus now also advertises on-demand video. Its general page does not prove Suffolk changed from scheduled sessions. If your facility offers that mode, install Securus Mobile, enable video calls, notifications, camera and microphone permissions. Ask support to identify the actual mode if the expected schedule is missing.
4. Test sound, camera, connection and device permissions before the session; use a quiet, private place and the same dress rules. Do not add an unapproved participant. Report a frozen/failed session with facility, resident ID, appointment time, device, error and screenshots to 972-734-1111.

For a scheduled cancellation, open My Sessions in the app or account and cancel there. Securus says deadlines vary by facility; its general 24-hour example is not a verified Suffolk deadline. If cancellation is blocked, notify provider and Visits promptly. Ask whether a missed visit can be restored.

Do not pay a generic video price. Current Massachusetts law requires supplemental video/electronic communications, if offered, to be free to both ends. A national funding prompt or old stamp listing needs correction with Securus and the jail, not automatic payment. Save any unexpected charge for a dispute.

A concrete source conflict remains: JPay’s Massachusetts Suffolk County Jail listing still displays $12.50 for 30 minutes and stamp-purchase language. The current statute and Suffolk’s no-cost report support free offered communications. Treat that provider price as conflicting information to resolve with support, not as a verified local fee.

Tell the visiting desk what accommodation will make the visit possible before reserving: wheelchair access, an accessible screening method, assistive communication, an interpreter, a service animal, medically necessary supplies or a religious head covering. Ask for the responsible supervisor, the exact public entrance/drop-off and whether written approval is needed. Nashua: 617-635-1100 ext. 3001; HOC: 617-635-1000 ext. 2097.

SCSD says both sites comply with the ADA; that statement does not identify an accessible visitor parking space, drop-off lane or screening exception. County regulation 103 CMR 934.03 requires a process for resident accommodation requests. A resident can ask staff/case management for that process and written assistance with a grievance. The September 2024 PREA policy also requires disability and language access and generally prohibits using another resident as the interpreter for an abuse report.

No reviewed public local policy specifies a long-distance exception, an extended family session, an infant-supply quantity, a guardian-consent form submission method or an automatic visit for a critically ill resident. Ask the Superintendent/Visits for the precise exception and approval before purchasing travel. Counsel should arrange legal access through Inmate Legal Services; family appointments do not establish a confidential attorney visit.

Ask the resident which need is unmet before sending money. Record the full name/ID, facility, payer, amount, date, receipt and exact account type. If transferred, verify the new location before another deposit; neither funds nor approved visit access should be presumed to follow automatically.

Massachusetts General Laws c127 §87A requires jail/house-of-correction voice calls to be free for the person calling and receiving. The Q4 2025 official report confirms Suffolk’s free phone, video and electronic service activity. It does not publish an individual daily allowance. Do not transfer state-prison calling hours or another county’s number limits into these two jails.

Set up or recover your own Securus account if the current service requires it, and keep the receiving telephone number accurate. When calls fail, check handset spam blocking, blocked numbers, call forwarding and service interruptions. Tell Securus 972-734-1111 the called number, Massachusetts facility, resident ID, exact time and error announcement; ask whether the number is blocked or needs verification. Ask facility staff about a housing restriction or phone-list problem. Do not use another person’s account to evade a restriction.

No current SCSD public source located specifies the daily calling window, call length, approved-number cap or family emergency-message protocol. Call the main facility and ask the shift supervisor to route an urgent family matter; a call to administration does not connect directly to the resident. Treat ordinary calls/messages as nonprivate. Counsel should use Legal Services to arrange attorney calls/Zoom.

Put the sender’s name and complete return address on the envelope. The FAQ requires clean white paper and black ink for letters; drawings may use black ink or noncolored pencil. It also mentions noncolored pencil for correspondence but then says all letters must be black: using black ink avoids that inconsistency. No stained/discolored sheets or multilayer greeting cards. The FAQ states mail is searched before delivery.

Do not treat that general search statement as authority to open privileged legal correspondence without the resident. County regulation 103 CMR 948.05–.06 protects correspondence with attorneys, courts and listed public officials. Incoming privileged mail may be opened only in the addressed resident’s presence to inspect for contraband. Outgoing privileged mail must identify the resident and facility return address and be addressed to an eligible official; it may not be opened or impeded under that rule. Counsel should identify their professional sender role and ask the local mailroom for required envelope markings; the public local pages do not supply a complete legal-mail marking protocol.

For ordinary mail rejected for its contents, 103 CMR 948.09 requires written reasons and notice of a written appeal to the Sheriff/facility administrator. Incoming-mail notice goes to sender and resident; outgoing-mail notice goes to resident. Keep the envelope, rejection and copies. Ask the mailroom for the exact appeal address/deadline and whether the original will be returned, held or disposed of; the regulation does not supply SCSD’s local retention timetable. A returned letter after transfer should trigger a fresh Records check before resending.

South Bay’s published rule allows softcover books, magazines and newspapers sent directly from the publisher. It does not say a marketplace seller or family-shipped book qualifies. Confirm the resident’s current name/ID and ask the HOC mailroom about the title, sender, quantity and packaging before ordering. No food items may be brought or sent to the HOC under the posted rule.

The Nashua sources reviewed do not publish an equivalent current publisher/book limit. Ask its mailroom before applying South Bay’s restriction there. No verified local approved-package ordering service was found for either facility. Do not buy a commercial “care package” merely because a website lists the jail.

The public pages do not specify photograph dimensions, number per envelope, Polaroid treatment, hardcover exceptions or the physical-mail disposition after any scanning. Ask the correct mailroom about those exact items before mailing originals. The FAQ’s black-ink drawing rule is not a published ban on every photograph, nor permission for every photo type.

Under county mail rules, prohibited content includes escape/contraband plans, threats, criminal planning, dangerous weapon-making instructions and specified security/treatment risks. If a publication is refused, request the written basis and sender/resident appeal procedure. Court clothing follows the property exchange process below; it is not an unrestricted package exception.

Confirm the instrument and balance before purchasing it. The FAQ permits only a money order payable to the resident and caps the account at $500; an order exceeding $500 or pushing the balance above $500 is rejected. The facility pages also accept bank checks, and HOC describes $500 per transaction. Those are different rules. Ask Accounts: “Do you accept this bank check or only a money order; is $500 the total balance cap or transaction cap; what ID/memo is required?” Cash and personal checks are not accepted; HOC also excludes travelers checks.

Use the confirmed full name/ID and retain the money-order stub and receipt. The reviewed sources do not verify a current online/kiosk provider, mailed-deposit attention line, posting delay, weekly commissary spending cap or transfer process. Ask Accounts those specific questions, especially if a deposit is missing, returned or the person moved.

Residents without funds should request the local indigent-supply procedure from their caseworker or Accounts. County 103 CMR 948.04 requires 3 postage-free general letters weekly and unlimited privileged postage excluding attorneys; it permits a separate procedure for letters to attorneys of record in pending criminal cases. Ask Legal Services for the attorney-postage arrangement. Local indigence thresholds and hygiene-item distribution were not found publicly.

Nashua states canteen money can be picked up any day and is returned by check only to the detainee. That does not authorize a relative to collect it. HOC’s remaining-balance/refund timing is not published in the reviewed sources. Arrange the resident’s refund method with Accounts before release and retain a balance statement.

At Nashua, use the public sidewalk from the garage toward 200 Nashua Street; the garage entrance is not the jail entrance. At South Bay, ask for the current public visitor entrance on the Bradston campus rather than entering an administrative or service gate. Exact screening entrance and accessible curb access need confirmation at the visit desks. Allow time for street crossings, lockers and screening in addition to the published arrival lead time. Do not wait in a vehicle lane for release without staff direction.

The Route 10 timetable is effective September 6, 2026. The older Sheriff directions refer to Copley and a generic Lechmere train; use the current MBTA route/station names above. Stops can move during works, and the late trip shown at a mall or hospital timepoint is not a promised departure at the jail-side stop.

Route 10 runs weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays, with different schedules and holiday substitutions. For a 9 PM visit finish, plan the actual return departure from the correct direction’s stop and a backup ride; do not simply reverse the outbound stop. Plan the trip with MBTA using 200 Nashua Street or 20 Bradston Street plus the required check-in time. Check service/elevator alerts on the travel day. MBTA information: 617-222-3200, Monday–Friday 6:30 AM–8 PM; 711 for TTY, VRS for ASL. The guide does not provide live arrivals or guarantee the final sidewalk is step-free.

These are independently operated options, not jail-affiliated services or guaranteed vacancies. Confirm hours before a late arrival and verify room/parking costs directly. A hotel’s parking or a restaurant visit does not authorize leaving a car there during a jail visit. Obtain visiting approval and the unit appointment before committing to nonrefundable lodging. Food bought nearby cannot be passed to the resident.

For an immediate safety concern in custody, call the facility main line and ask the shift supervisor for an urgent medical/mental-health check; give the resident’s full name/ID, current location if known, specific symptoms or statements, and when you learned them. Do not wait for a routine letter or ordinary grievance. Nashua’s published medical line is 617-704-6683. HOC’s directory prints medical ext. 209, which may be incomplete: call 617-635-1000 and ask the operator for Medical rather than inventing a longer extension.

Send useful clinical facts through the channel staff authorizes: prescriptions and dose schedule, pharmacy/prescriber contacts, allergies, last dose, withdrawal risk, prior hospitalizations and needed glasses/hearing aids. Ask how to deliver records and whether a medical item needs advance approval; no public medication/glasses drop-off policy was located. Do not put medication in ordinary mail or assume a visit desk can accept it.

SCSD provides intake health screening, chronic/dental/mental-health care and medication for opioid use disorder when clinically indicated. The official December 24, 2025 audit, covering records through June 2024, describes a Health Service Request Form (HSRF): resident selects medical/dental/mental-health need, dates/signs it, and uses the unit secure box or hands it to healthcare staff during medication pass. It describes daily collection, urgency review within 24 hours, and nonemergency encounters within 48 hours on weekdays/72 hours on weekends. These are documented procedures, not a guarantee of today’s appointment; emergencies should be reported immediately.

A family member can provide information, but staff may need the resident’s signed authorization before discussing protected care. Ask for the release-of-information form and secure clinical contact, and have the resident name who may receive updates. An ordinary visitation approval is not medical consent.

For an ordinary unresolved custody problem, the resident should request the local grievance form/procedure from unit staff or a caseworker, state the event date, people involved, specific problem and requested remedy, and retain the dated receipt and response. Family may document concerns to the Superintendent, but that contact does not automatically file or preserve the resident’s own grievance.

County rule 103 CMR 934.02 requires informal and formal routes, a dated formal receipt, investigation/resolution within 15 working days, a written result and appeal notice, and appeal resolution within 30 working days. Extenuating extensions may add no more than 30 working days. Emergencies receive priority. These are response requirements, not a verified SCSD filing deadline. Ask for the current local filing/appeal deadline, submission point and accommodation help; state-prison 103 CMR 491 procedures are not automatically SCSD’s process.

Have the resident ask the caseworker which programs are available in the current unit and how to request screening or join a waiting list. Nashua Social Services: 617-635-1100 ext. 3146; South Bay Social Services: 617-704-6542; HOC Education: 617-704-6540. A family cannot enroll the person merely by buying a course or calling a provider.

The official 2025 operations presentation describes OASIS substance-use treatment and discharge planning for pretrial and sentenced men, PEACE programming for emerging adult men under 26, vocational/carpentry/culinary learning and Project EVOLVE with Boston Medical Center Health System for mental illness and addiction in the pretrial population. EVOLVE participation is voluntary and includes reentry support. These descriptions do not guarantee eligibility, a place or a sentence reduction.

Ask about reading/education assessment, ESOL, religious services, recovery support, vocational certification and disability accommodations. Keep the request and staff response if access is delayed. For release planning, request the Richard Pacitti team early; its published responsibilities include documentation, benefits, job referrals, housing/treatment connections, family support and transport coordination. A program referral is not a promise of a housing bed or a particular release date.

Use MassCourts with the court/division and case number; compare the next event with counsel or the clerk. Ask whether appearance is remote and how family observers may attend. A docket update is not confirmation the jail received a release order.

1. Ask Records whether bail is available on every matter, the exact amount and any other hold. Nashua Records 617-635-1100 ext. 3005 supplies the commissioner’s current contact. The jail page says availability after 5 PM Monday–Friday and on call weekends; call before arriving.
2. Confirm the accepted payment instrument, payee, ID, posting place and hours with that commissioner/clerk. Do not buy a money order payable to the resident for court bail. Obtain a receipt identifying the payer and case.
3. Confirm the order reached the jail and ask about remaining holds and processing; paying one case’s bail is not a release guarantee.

After-hours fee correction: current MGL c262 §24 permits a maximum $80 bail-taking fee and directs that fees for bail taken outside regular working hours be charged only to the Trial Court. Older court guidance still says the person pays a nonrefundable fee of up to $50. Do not add that old family charge to the bail deposit. Ask the commissioner/clerk to apply the current rule if quoted a conflicting fee.

The court’s post-arraignment guide says cash bail returns to the defendant, relative or friend who posted it if required appearances were kept through the case. Preserve the receipt and current address; ask the clerk for refund processing and any forfeiture issue. Discuss bail review and case-specific conditions with counsel.

Published Bail Rule 41, effective July 1, 2014, permits a bail magistrate to accept cash, a bank check, treasurer’s/cashier’s check or U.S. Government money order, with the listed checks/order payable only to the magistrate authorizing release. Confirm which form the assigned magistrate will accept before buying it; this is not the jail commissary payee.

At Nashua, the resident signs a property release in the caseworker’s presence and sends it to the front desk before the named visitor comes. If already released without that form, the jail requires the former resident’s signed notarized letter. Property is held only 30 days after release. Ask whether the specific item is available and whether the desk has the authorization, then bring your photo ID. A relative’s status alone does not authorize pickup.

Ask separately about keys, wallet, identification and court clothing. Police evidence or seized property may remain with the arresting agency and is not released by the jail’s personal-property form. Count items against the receipt and report any discrepancy before leaving if possible. For a weekend release, arrange in advance how the person will obtain essential belongings and any remaining check.

1. Have counsel/Records identify the release basis, remaining cases/holds and where the person is physically housed. A court order, completed sentence or bail receipt still requires facility processing.
2. Ask the current facility for the public release door, permitted waiting place and how the person can contact you. No reliable fixed release hour or processing duration was found in the current public sources.
3. Arrange a phone number, charged phone when returned, weather-appropriate clothes, accessible transport if needed and a backup ride after transit ends. Ask case management about transport assistance before discharge.
4. Ask the resident to request medication instructions, prescriptions/bridge supply if clinically arranged, follow-up appointments and MassHealth continuity. Confirm the destination will accept the person that day before arranging transport.
5. Review the property receipt, remaining-funds procedure and court/probation/parole reporting instructions. Keep court documents and make the next appointment even if the online docket is slow to update.

Nashua’s 30-day property retention and weekday pickup windows can matter after a night/weekend release. South Bay’s rules need its own Property/Accounts confirmation. If release becomes a transfer, ask the responsible agency for the next confirmed institution; do not send a family driver to an assumed receiving facility.

Ask the caseworker for the Richard Pacitti Reentry and Transitional Center team. Its published work includes birth certificates, food benefits, MassHealth, child-support connections, toiletries, housing/treatment referrals, employment preparation and transport coordination to home, parole or treatment. It holds a monthly discharge panel for people within 90 days of release and describes family/returning-citizen follow-up for 1 year. Request the referral early, but ask about help even when release is sudden.

SCSD’s reintegration page also describes classification-based community programs and Brooke House. The page’s community-supervision criteria include men within 6 months of sentence completion or parole, an approved safe home, ability to maintain work/school and a phone line. These are published program descriptions, not automatic early-release eligibility. Ask Classification/counsel about current criteria and the court/parole decision.

For a planned referral, have the person’s consent and a list of immediate needs: safe sleeping place, medication/clinical appointment, ID, benefits, work, phone and transport. The City offers online service registration; the office can help identify the next step. Neither a registration form nor a program description reserves a shelter/treatment bed. Confirm an actual receiving contact before discharge.
