Use the active 24-bed Sheriff jail
The active adult jail is Dickinson County Jail inside the Dickinson County Courthouse at 1802 Hill Avenue, Suite 1200, Spirit Lake, IA 51360. The Sheriff identifies it as a 24-bed, 24-hour secure facility for adult pretrial detainees and male and female sentenced residents. Call 712-336-2793 for the Jail Administrator; Sheriff Greg Baloun is the current Sheriff.

Keep jail, court and other custody systems separate
This guide covers the adult Sheriff jail only. The Clerk in Suite 2506, municipal police agencies, juvenile court in Estherville, Third District supervision, state and federal prisons, immigration detention, hospitals, former courthouse buildings and any receiving or contract jail use different records and rules. Municipal officers may book someone here, but their departments do not operate the jail.

Use 24 beds as facility capacity, not live population
The Sheriff publishes 24 beds. That figure is facility capacity, not the number currently housed, staffed beds, gender-specific availability or proof that a transferred person remains there. Use the current roster and call 712-336-2793 for the named person.
Sources: Dickinson County Sheriff — Dickinson County Jail · Dickinson County Sheriff — Current Inmate Roster
Use the Sheriff roster and retain the useful fields
Open the official Sheriff “Jail Roster” link. Record the generated date/time, booking date/time, full displayed name, age, arresting agency, charges or hold text, release field and bond total. Then call 712-336-2793 before paying, traveling or assuming release.
Sources: Dickinson County Sheriff — Home · Dickinson County Sheriff — Current Inmate Roster
Troubleshoot a missing or stale roster result
A missing name does not prove release. Retry exact spelling, hyphens and prior names; check whether the PDF timestamp is current; allow for booking processing; and ask 712-336-2793 whether the person is in intake, court, hospital, transfer, another-agency hold or outside Dickinson custody. IowaVINE at 1-888-7-IAVINE is a second check, not a guaranteed real-time signal.

Visits and video
Locally actionable steps with verified facts, explicit boundaries and accountable unknowns.
Plan for Thursday and confirm the start-time conflict
The public jail page says first-come visiting is Thursday 12:30-4:30 p.m.; the June 7, 2026 handbook says 12:00-4:30 p.m. and video teleconference at the Sheriff’s Office. Call 712-336-2793 before travel and ask which start time controls for that date and resident.
Sources: Dickinson County Sheriff — Dickinson County Jail · Dickinson County Jail — Inmate Rules Handbook, dated June 7, 2026
Check in at the Sheriff’s Office for a 30-minute visit
Regular visits are first come, first served and last up to 30 minutes. Check in at the Sheriff’s Office in Suite 1200. No reservation lead, weekly frequency, last check-in cutoff or queue-capacity rule is published; ask before leaving home. If the Sheriff’s Office is closed for a holiday, the handbook says an alternate day will be offered but does not name it.
Sources: Dickinson County Sheriff — Dickinson County Jail · Dickinson County Jail — Inmate Rules Handbook, dated June 7, 2026
Bring required ID and supervise every minor
Every visitor must present a valid driver’s license or ID card; the jail states no exceptions. Anyone under 18 must have adult supervision at all times. The county does not publish accepted ID alternatives, a minimum child age, proof of guardianship or whether the supervising adult must be a parent; ask the Jail Administrator before bringing a minor.
Expect staff screening and a 90-day custody restriction
Staff decide whether a visitor may proceed. The handbook says a person who was confined in Dickinson County Jail within the prior 90 days may not visit. No advance visitor list, background-check process, maximum visitors or denial-review route is published; disclose recent custody and ask before travel.

Follow the published conservative dress rule
Do not wear see-through or lace clothing, low-cut tops, short or cut-off shirts, short splits, exposed midriff clothing, or items with vulgarity, profanity or racial slurs. The jail publishes no head-covering, footwear, medical-device or religious-accommodation detail; ask 712-336-2793 when needed.
Leave food, drinks, phones and recording devices outside
The visitation area prohibits food, drinks, cell phones and recording devices, and all entrants are subject to search. Intoxicated or disruptive visitors will not be admitted. The jail does not publish locker availability or rules for keys, purses, coats, medication, mobility aids or infant supplies; ask before arrival and do not assume storage.
Request disability, clergy and special visits early
Cleared clergy, mental-health professionals, personal physicians or psychiatrists, probation/parole officers and social workers may have confidential professional visits in their official capacity. Family long-distance, protective-order, disability, hospital and other exceptions are not published. State the exact need and deadline to the Jail Administrator.
Sources: Dickinson County Sheriff — Dickinson County Jail · Dickinson County Jail — Inmate Rules Handbook, dated June 7, 2026
Use the separate legal-visit process
Attorneys or authorized staff may visit confidentially. The handbook publishes attorney visits Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m., with alternate times subject to the jailer or administrator. Residents may contact counsel through the texting device without charge or recording. Counsel should confirm credentials, document exchange and devices with 712-336-2793.

Separate onsite video from unconfirmed remote video
The handbook says regular visitors report to the Sheriff’s Office and the visit occurs by video teleconference. That is an onsite workflow. Reliance advertises remote video only where enabled, but the county does not confirm Dickinson remote video, scheduling, rates or lead time. Ask 712-336-2793 before installing or funding an app.

Document failures and use the correct support path
If Dickinson confirms remote Reliance video, open Reliance Connect before the call, test Wi-Fi and cellular data, update the app and keep screenshots, time, resident name and charge. Use 800-896-3201 or cs@reliancetelephone.com for app or billing failure; use 712-336-2793 for jail cancellation, lockdown or eligibility. Ask Reliance whether the funded account is refundable before payment.

Phone, mail and money
Locally actionable steps with verified facts, explicit boundaries and accountable unknowns.
Use Reliance for resident phone service
The Sheriff identifies Reliance as the phone provider. Residents have daily phone access, may make collect calls to unrestricted landlines, or use calling cards to reach cell phones. Confirm the enabled account type for Dickinson on the facility page or at 800-896-3201 before funding.
Sources: Dickinson County Sheriff — Dickinson County Jail · Reliance Telephone — Dickinson County Jail · Reliance Telephone — Support
Prepare for resident-initiated calls and one voicemail route
The public may leave a voicemail for a resident at 515-316-9942. Do not call the jail to leave an ordinary message; the Sheriff limits that path to a verifiable emergency. Calls may be restricted or disabled for security. Have the exact resident name ready and never use voicemail for an emergency.
Sources: Dickinson County Sheriff — Dickinson County Jail · Dickinson County Jail — Inmate Rules Handbook, dated June 7, 2026
Choose the account by destination and refund rule
A Prepaid Collect account funds one receiving number and is refundable through 800-896-3201. Voice & Video Only funds follow the resident device, may reach multiple numbers and may be refundable to recent contributors. All Options includes texting where available but is non-transferable and non-refundable. Confirm Dickinson availability and rates before choosing.
Sources: Reliance Telephone — Policies · Reliance Telephone — Support
Troubleshoot blocked or failed calls in two places
For payment verification, declined cards, refunds, a blocked receiving number or provider errors, call Reliance at 800-896-3201 weekdays 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Central and keep the account phone, resident name, receipt and error. For discipline, device assignment or facility restriction, contact the Jail Administrator. Funds cannot transfer to another jail.

Use the Dickinson texting-device workflow carefully
A resident must request and be approved for a device, sign the agreement and fund it within 3 days. The local guide publishes a $4.00 monthly rental, $0.09 per inbound or outbound 160-character message and a $200.00 damage charge. Funds may be added at jail.im or reliancetelephone.com; texts are monitored, photos/emojis are unavailable, and no refund is given when the device is returned.

Use the published personal-mail address exactly
Address a letter: INMATE’S FULL NAME / Dickinson County Jail / P.O. Box 214 / Spirit Lake, IA 51360-0214. Use a complete return address. The handbook says all mail must travel through USPS and personal incoming and outgoing mail is opened and inspected; do not send to the physical courthouse address.
Sources: Dickinson County Sheriff — Dickinson County Jail · Dickinson County Jail — Inmate Rules Handbook, dated June 7, 2026
Keep personal letters simple and confirm rejection handling
Do not send packages, obscene or pornographic material, personal checks, postage stamps, stamped envelopes, food, or periodicals not sent directly by the publisher. Outgoing envelopes may contain at most 3 sheets and are submitted unsealed. The county does not publish incoming paper/envelope limits, greeting-card rules, notice to sender or return/destruction handling; ask before mailing valuables or originals.

Stay within the resident possession limit
The handbook authorizes up to 3 personal photographs without backing and rejects Polaroid or sexually explicit photos. It does not say whether photos may be enclosed in incoming mail, their dimensions, color/printing rules, or what happens to excess photos. Ask the Jail Administrator before sending them.
Sources: Dickinson County Jail — Inmate Rules Handbook, dated June 7, 2026
Mark legal mail and preserve the privileged route
Use the same P.O. Box 214 address with the resident’s full name and clearly identify the privileged sender. The handbook says incoming legal mail is opened by the resident in staff presence only to remove contraband and is not read; outgoing legal mail may be sealed. State rules also protect attorney, judge, governor, Ombudsman and legislator mail when properly marked.
Sources: Dickinson County Jail — Inmate Rules Handbook, dated June 7, 2026 · Iowa Administrative Code — Jail facilities, chapter 201—50 · Iowa Office of Ombudsman — Contact
Do not ship a book until the source is approved
Residents may possess 1 Bible and 2 jail-approved books. The public page says periodicals must come directly from the publisher, and state rules allow unused reading material directly from the publishing source. The jail does not publish approved sellers, binding, size, title or return rules; obtain approval before ordering.
Sources: Dickinson County Jail — Inmate Rules Handbook, dated June 7, 2026 · Dickinson County Sheriff — Dickinson County Jail · Iowa Administrative Code — Jail facilities, chapter 201—50
Do not send or drop off an unapproved item
Packages through the mail and outside item drop-offs are prohibited without prior Jail Administrator approval. The handbook says no personal clothing or non-issued hygiene items are allowed in cells. Ask 712-336-2793 for written or recorded approval, delivery method and disposition if rejected before spending money.

Resolve the cash-versus-Tiger deposit conflict before paying
The June handbook says cash may be left Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m.; the current jail page says the Sheriff no longer accepts commissary funds and all transactions/deposits go through Tiger. Tiger’s Dickinson checkout currently shows commissary ordering but not a public web-deposit option. Do not bring cash or improvise a payment: ask Jarrod Fischer at 712-336-2793 or jfischer@dickinsoncountyiowa.gov which current trust method and resident identifier apply.
Sources: Dickinson County Jail — Inmate Rules Handbook, dated June 7, 2026 · Dickinson County Sheriff — Dickinson County Jail · Tiger Commissary — Dickinson County Jail
Use Tiger and verify the live cutoff
Select Iowa, Dickinson County Jail and the correct resident at Tiger. The handbook publishes orders due Sunday by 8:00 a.m., a $10.00 minimum and $100.00 maximum, while the jail page says one order weekly with Thursday delivery. Approved items and the live cutoff appear during checkout. Save the confirmation; Tiger states deposits and orders are not refundable.

Stop duplicate payments and trace the transaction
For a Tiger error, do not submit repeatedly. Keep the order number and email receipt, search the transaction, and write websupport@tigercommissary.com; a repeated attempt may leave a bank hold. For a wrong resident, release or transfer, contact both Tiger and the Jail Administrator promptly, but do not promise a refund.

Health, grievances and rights
Locally actionable steps with verified facts, explicit boundaries and accountable unknowns.
Route urgent health facts through jail staff
For an immediate danger call 911. For an urgent concern about a housed resident, call 712-336-2793 or non-emergency dispatch at 712-336-2525 and give full name, symptom or behavior, medication/allergy, time observed and callback number. Do not leave urgent information at the inmate voicemail number. Privacy law may limit what staff can disclose.

Use the resident request and release-of-information path
Residents may send up to 2 medical requests daily on the texting device or submit a paper medical request. The jail says necessary medical and dental care is available and may request authorization to contact a doctor, pharmacy or obtain records. Family should ask the Jail Administrator how to send records and what resident-signed release is required; Lakes Regional Healthcare is not the jail family desk.
Sources: Dickinson County Jail — Inmate Rules Handbook, dated June 7, 2026 · Lakes Regional Healthcare — Contact
Report specific behavior and use the emergency channel
Report suicidal statements, confusion, withdrawal signs, threats, missed medication or other concrete behavior immediately to 712-336-2793 or 712-336-2525; use 911 for imminent danger. Residents are told to use the emergency intercom for life-threatening medical problems or suicide attempts and a routine request for non-emergencies.

Confirm medication, glasses and records before delivery
The handbook requires prescription medication in the resident’s original, current, legible pharmacy container; mixed or unreadable bottles are not accepted. Prescription glasses, hearing aids, dentures and one pair of contacts are authorized possessions, but the family delivery path is not published. Call 712-336-2793 before bringing anything and have pharmacy/prescriber contacts ready.
Sources: Dickinson County Jail — Inmate Rules Handbook, dated June 7, 2026
Follow the local grievance deadlines before escalation
A resident files a written grievance within 3 days, on paper or through the texting device. The Jail Administrator has 5 days to respond, excluding weekends and holidays; the resident has 3 days to appeal; the Sheriff has 10 days to respond, excluding weekends and holidays. A separate disciplinary appeal is due within 24 hours of the written decision. After the jail has an opportunity to respond, the Iowa Ombudsman accepts complaints at 515-281-3592 or 1-888-426-6283.

Request a specific jail accommodation in writing
State jail rules require reasonable accommodation and access to programs for residents with disabilities. The county publishes no jail-specific ADA form, coordinator or appeal. The resident should submit a general request on paper or device; family or visitor should contact the Jail Administrator with the exact accommodation and date. The court ADA coordinator at 712-279-6608 (39747) handles court access, not jail access.

Use safety, grievance and outside-review channels distinctly
Dickinson County publishes no jail-specific anonymous or third-party PREA reporting line, retaliation procedure or outside investigator. For immediate danger use 911 or jail/dispatch; a resident can use the emergency intercom and written grievance. Ask the Jail Administrator for the PREA coordinator and confidential third-party route. The Iowa Ombudsman is an outside government-complaint option, not an emergency line.

Court, counsel and release
Locally actionable steps with verified facts, explicit boundaries and accountable unknowns.
Use court records for the case, not housing
Search Iowa court records for case number, charge, orders and hearing information, then call the Dickinson Clerk at 712-336-1138. The roster answers jail custody. A court filing, bond total or hearing time does not prove release, transport completion or current housing.
Sources: Iowa Judicial Branch — Dickinson County · Iowa Judicial Branch — Search court records · Dickinson County Sheriff — Current Inmate Roster
Ask the court who actually represents the person
Ask the resident for counsel’s name or call the Clerk with the case number. The State Public Defender designation sends Dickinson class-A matters to Sioux City Adult, but that table does not establish representation in a named case or cover every charge. Residents may contact counsel through the jail texting device without charge or recording.
Sources: Iowa Judicial Branch — Dickinson County · Iowa State Public Defender — Adult designations · Dickinson County Jail — Inmate Rules Handbook, dated June 7, 2026
Confirm the case order and local payment method
Use the roster bond total only as a lead. Check the case order, then ask 712-336-1138 and 712-336-2793 whether the amount is payable, the authorized payee, cash/surety/percentage form, accepted payment method, hours, receipt and release hold. The statewide schedule is a framework; Dickinson’s local acceptance steps are unpublished.
Sources: Dickinson County Sheriff — Current Inmate Roster · Iowa Judicial Branch — Dickinson County · Iowa Judicial Branch — Uniform bond schedule · Iowa Judicial Branch — Criminal cases FAQ
Use written authorization for property release
A resident may release all or part of property or money by written request stating the amount and reason; nothing may be released to another resident. For transfer to prison, the resident should arrange pickup before transport. The jail holds property up to 60 days before disposal unless the administrator approves another arrangement. Ask about recipient ID, hours and pickup point.
Sources: Dickinson County Jail — Inmate Rules Handbook, dated June 7, 2026
Do not plan pickup from a court time
No release window or pickup point is published. Court order, posted bond, transport, holds, paperwork, property and account closeout may affect timing. Ask 712-336-2793 whether release is authorized and which courthouse door the person will use; do not ask jail staff to disclose confidential prison-transfer plans.
Sources: Dickinson County Jail — Inmate Rules Handbook, dated June 7, 2026 · Dickinson County Sheriff — Dickinson County Jail · Iowa Judicial Branch — Dickinson County
Ask how funds, medication and device are returned
The handbook says the resident receives the inmate-account balance at release but does not identify cash, check or card. Personal property is returned on release or transfer; the texting device must be returned and its Reliance balance remains with the account. Ask before pickup how money, prescription medication, glasses, documents and disputed property will be handled.

Keep Third District supervision separate
Dickinson County is in Iowa DOC’s Third Judicial District. Probation, parole, pretrial supervision, electronic monitoring and the Sioux City residential facilities are not jail custody and do not use jail visiting or account rules. Ask the named supervising officer; the Sheldon office is 712-324-5384 when district routing is needed.
Sources: Iowa DOC — Third Judicial District
Build release help around verified local contacts
The handbook lists NA, AA and Bible study as immediately eligible with dates/times to be announced; it does not publish enrollment or discharge planning. For food and household help call Dickinson UDMO at 712-336-1112; for county Community Services call 712-336-0775; veterans can ask for the county Veterans Affairs contact listed at 712-336-0883; call 211 for broader referrals.

Parking and transit
Locally actionable steps with verified facts, explicit boundaries and accountable unknowns.
Use courthouse public parking, then confirm jail access
Public courthouse parking is on the west side off Highway 71, with limited parking along Hill Avenue on the east. The published courthouse entrance is on the west near public parking. Court information also names the west lot for jurors. No source identifies jail-reserved spaces, accessible-space location, Thursday visitor validation or after-hours access; call 712-336-2793.

Reserve RIDES door-to-door service
RIDES serves the Dickinson Lakes Area Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Call 1-800-358-5037 and press 1; a 24-hour advance reservation is recommended. Give pickup address, 1802 Hill Avenue Suite 1200 as destination, appointment/return times, payment method and any wheelchair, walker, oxygen, aide or service-animal need.

Fund My RIDES before the trip
The published general-public Lakes Area fare is $2.50 per one-way trip; extended-area and outside-city pricing differs. Payment is due before the ride through My RIDES by card or mailed check; drivers do not take account funds. Call to classify the trip and confirm the fare. Reservations may move within a 20-minute window.

Confirm the west-door drop point and indoor route
RIDES strives for door-to-door service, but no operator source names a fixed jail stop or exact curb. Ask dispatch to use the west courthouse entrance near public parking and tell the driver the scheduled door. From that door, follow courthouse security directions to the Sheriff’s Office, Suite 1200. Confirm accessibility and construction conditions before travel.

Use the verified seven-date service window
For October 2-8, 2026, RIDES publishes potential weekday service Friday and Monday-Thursday from 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.; no regular Saturday or Sunday service is published. These are operator windows, not confirmed trip reservations or jail release pickups. Reserve and confirm each trip directly.
Sources: RIDES — Hours and locations · RIDES — How to ride · RIDES — Passenger Guide, updated February 2025
Do not schedule transit from an estimated release
RIDES requests advance reservations and does not publish weekend service, while the jail publishes no release window. Wait for confirmed release authorization and pickup door before committing a ride; ask RIDES about same-day capacity and cancellation. A cancellation received 30 minutes or less before pickup may count as a no-show.

Use the direct grocery and prepared-food contact
Spirit Lake Hy-Vee is at 1500 18th Street, 712-336-4900, and publishes daily 6:00 a.m.-11:00 p.m. hours with Thanksgiving and Christmas closures and other holiday changes. It offers groceries and prepared-food departments. Confirm department hours and do not take food into the jail visitation area.

Start with Dickinson Outreach for food help
Upper Des Moines Opportunity Dickinson Outreach is at 1575 18th Street, Spirit Lake, IA 51360, 712-336-1112. Its current page lists walk-in food pantry Wednesday 10:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m.; other office days require an appointment for food assistance. Confirm eligibility, holiday closures and documents before travel.
Keep community, court and jail care distinct
Dickinson Community Services is 712-336-0775 and 211 can route housing, food, utilities and transport. Lakes Regional Healthcare at 2301 Highway 71 South, 712-336-1230, is a 24/7 community hospital contact, not the jail medical desk. The handbook’s “Spirit Lake Medical Center” name conflicts with the health system’s 2020 merger name; route resident care through jail staff.

Finding someone held here
Use the county system for a recent arrest. A state corrections search covers people in state custody. It generally will not list someone booked into a county jail this week. Bookings, bail, release, and visiting are all handled by Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office.

Clear information.
Clear boundaries.
Jail411 is an independent information resource for families and friends. We are not a government agency, jail operator, law firm or live custody-records service.
Can Jail411 tell me if someone is in custody right now?
No. Jail411 does not hold live custody records. Use the official locator for the county, state, federal or ICE system that has the person; start here if you do not know which.
Does posting bond mean the person comes home?
Not always. A probation or parole hold, another county's warrant or an immigration detainer can keep someone in custody after bond is posted. Ask the jail what holds are on the booking before you pay.
What should I confirm before visiting?
The person's current facility, the visiting schedule, approval requirements, accepted identification and arrival instructions. Check the facility page and its official sources before you travel.
What if I find something that needs correcting?
Send us the page and the detail that needs attention. Include the official source when you have one. Do not send private booking documents or other sensitive personal information.
