Use the active Hanawalt Street adult jail
White County Jail is the active adult Sheriff jail at 915 Hanawalt St, Monticello, IN 47960. Call 574-583-2251 for custody and local-rule questions. The Sheriff’s Office, jail and 911 dispatch share the facility, but only the jail rules belong in this guide.

Treat 132 beds and work-release space as dated design facts
The former official site says the present building was completed in July 1998 with 68 cells, 132 beds and space designed for 40 work-release participants. The current site and 2025 handbook do not publish staffed capacity, live population or current work-release enrollment. Do not use those design numbers as availability.

Keep neighboring systems separate
Courts and the Clerk control cases and orders; Probation and Community Corrections supervise separate programs; municipal police may arrest without housing; youth, IDOC, federal and immigration custody use different systems. Confirm the actual custodian before applying this jail’s rules.

Start with the current Sheriff roster
Open the Sheriff inmate search and search by name. The accessible public result shows a booked name and photograph, but the detail page does not reliably expose booking number, charges, bond or release date. Save the exact displayed spelling and photograph match, then call before paying, mailing or traveling.

Use local and statewide fallbacks for no result
Try the surname and shorter name forms. Check MyCase for the county and case number, then cross-check Indiana’s county-jail portal or VINE. If the arrest is recent, the name is common, or the result disappeared, call 574-583-2251 and ask whether the person is booked, released, transferred or listed under another spelling.

Send each task to the office that controls it
Use 574-583-2251 for jail custody, visits, mail, property and release; 574-583-7032 for Clerk records; 574-583-5032 for Circuit Court; 574-583-1548 for Superior Court; 574-583-8217 for Probation; and 574-583-4175 for Community Corrections. None of the court or supervision offices can promise a jail release time.

Visits and video
Approval, scheduling, minors, exceptions and failed sessions.
Expect noncontact video visits
The 2025 handbook allows approved visitors to use video from home or lobby kiosks and says the jail does not allow contact visits. The Sheriff’s current Visitation menu goes directly to InmateSales. Select Indiana, White County Jail and the correct resident before scheduling.

Use the current day framework, then confirm the slot
The handbook says kiosk visits may occur Monday through Thursday and Saturday and Sunday; lobby kiosks are available only Saturday and Sunday. Visits are 20 minutes, classification permitting, and exact times are at command-staff discretion. Call 574-583-2251 because no current cutoff, frequency or holiday schedule is published.

Request access before buying
Create or sign in to InmateSales, request access to the exact facility and resident, upload a clear shoulders-up photo and matching valid ID, and wait for approval before buying a remote session. CPC accepts a driver license, state ID card or passport. Local approval time is unpublished.
Sources: Combined Public Communications family help · InmateSales account portal
Confirm minors and status restrictions before travel
The current handbook tells adults to control minor children but does not publish age, relationship, birth-certificate, guardian-consent or group-size rules. It bars a visitor known to be on parole, probation or bond. Older rules limited children to first and third weekends; because that detail is absent from the 2025 handbook, call the jail before bringing a child.

Ask about clothing, belongings and infant supplies
Neither the current handbook nor InmateSales publishes White County lobby dress, locker, phone, bag, diaper, formula or stroller rules. Bring only the approved ID, arrive without unnecessary belongings and call 574-583-2251 for the current lobby rule and any disability or infant exception.

Do not promise special or replacement visits
The handbook allows command staff to suspend visitors and says weather-terminated or lockdown-canceled visits are not made up. Long-distance, clergy, emergency, special and disability-modified visit procedures are unpublished; request them from the jail before travel.
Sources: White County Sheriff 2025 inmate handbook · White County Sheriff current home
Prepare both InmateSales apps and the device
Use InmateSales to request access, fund and schedule. CPC says remote visits open in the separate InmateSales View app; a computer needs internet and webcam, or use a compatible mobile device. Chrome works best. Verify the account photo and ID before the appointment.

Separate scheduling, local cancellation and technical failures
For scheduling call CPC video support at 866-340-7879. For account or transaction help call 702-829-3001 and keep the transaction ID. If the jail cancels for lockdown or weather, the handbook says no makeup; local refund handling is unpublished. For camera, microphone, login or token problems, contact CPC before the slot ends.

Phone, mail and money
Keep providers, mail classes and financial products separate.
Use CPC/InmateSales for calls
Combined Public Communications supplies the housing-unit phones. Residents cannot receive incoming calls. Standard calls are recorded and monitored; use the private attorney-visit or Zoom path for privileged communications. A broken housing phone must be reported by the resident so jail staff can submit a CPC work order.
Sources: White County Sheriff 2025 inmate handbook · Combined Public Communications family help
Choose Direct Pay or PIN Debit deliberately
Direct Pay attaches funds to one telephone number; PIN Debit lets the resident call permitted numbers. Create the account at InmateSales or call 702-829-3001. CPC accepts Visa, Mastercard or Discover, may charge a processing fee and says collect calling is no longer available even though the local handbook still mentions collect phones.
Sources: Combined Public Communications family help · White County Sheriff 2025 inmate handbook
Keep the transaction ID for transfers and refunds
For a wrong number, release or transfer, call CPC with the transaction ID. CPC says phone funds can be transferred and release or facility-transfer refunds require that ID; Chirper funds are not transferable but may be reviewed for refund. The jail does not resolve CPC billing disputes.

Route family mail to the Kentucky scanning address
Address standard nonlegal mail exactly: Resident Name / White County Jail Indiana / P.O. Box 76550 / Highland Heights, KY 41076. Put the sender’s complete name and address on the envelope. Nonprivileged mail may be searched, scanned, read or copied; do not drop it at the jail.
Sources: White County Sheriff 2025 inmate handbook · White County Sheriff inmate mail
Keep legal mail at the physical jail address
Lawyers and other legal representatives should use: White County Sheriff Office / Attention: Resident Name / 915 W. Hanawalt Road / Monticello, IN 47960. The handbook says legal mail is distributed 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday, not Sunday or holidays. The public rule does not describe inspection in the resident’s presence; counsel should confirm privilege markings.
Send only verified letters and non-obscene photos
The handbook allows letters, non-obscene pictures and money orders; money orders use the physical jail address. Do not mail cash, checks, greeting cards or mail-order items. It says other items are seized into personal property, but does not state whether rejected letters or original scanned pages are returned or destroyed.
Confirm books, periodicals and packages first
Residents may possess three books, two religious books and one newspaper; a resident may subscribe to a newspaper. The public rule does not authorize family or publisher book shipments, magazines or packages. Do not send them until 574-583-2251 confirms format, seller and quantity.
Use the current JailATM deposit link
The current Sheriff menu sends Commissary users to JailATM, and CPC says InmateSales does not take commissary deposits. Sign in to JailATM, choose Indiana and White County, then search by at least four surname letters or resident ID. Confirm the match before payment.

Know the online payment and failure rules
JailATM officially supports Visa and Mastercard, not prepaid cards, and requires a Social Security number on the payer account. The facility-specific fee appears before confirmation. A missing deposit normally takes 24-48 hours; call the jail first, then ask JailATM to investigate after 72 business hours if unresolved.
Sources: JailATM support · JailATM deposits
Distinguish deposits, orders and indigent supplies
The handbook says residents normally order commissary weekly, orders are due before Sunday lockdown and the local order maximum is $300, subject to classification and security delays. A lobby kiosk is also available, but its hours, payment types and fee are unpublished. Indigent residents must spend seven straight days here and have zero or negative balances in all accounts; incoming money restarts the seven-day period.

Health, grievance and rights
Use local internal routes and preserve external-channel gaps.
Use the resident kiosk for routine care
Residents request medical care electronically on the commissary kiosk. The handbook says medical complaints are collected Monday-Friday, triaged by qualified staff, and a licensed physician, dentist and outside optometrist are available. Published copays are $10 for a medical or dental visit and $5 per prescription; inability-to-pay and mental-health procedures are not explained publicly.
Do not deliver medicine or glasses without instructions
Medication is prescribed by the jail doctor and passed at 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. The handbook allows one pair of glasses and one pair of contact lenses with cleaner, but gives families no medication-verification, pharmacy, eyeglass or device-delivery route. Call 574-583-2251 and ask for medical instructions before bringing anything.

Escalate urgent information through the jail
For an immediate threat, call 911; for an urgent concern about a person already inside, call 574-583-2251, state that it is urgent and ask for the on-duty supervisor or medical staff. The handbook says emergency-room decisions follow a case review and on-call doctor. No secure family clinical channel, contractor name, authorization form or disclosure rule is published.
Sources: White County Sheriff 2025 inmate handbook · White County Sheriff current home
Use the seven-day kiosk grievance process
A resident files an electronic grievance on the commissary kiosk within seven days of the incident. Unanswered grievances auto-escalate every 72 hours through Sergeant, Assistant Jail Commander, Jail Commander and Sheriff. An unsatisfactory answer may be appealed on the kiosk within seven days. Keep dates and request numbers.
Request detention accommodations from the jail first
Call 574-583-2251 for a custody, communication, visit or mobility accommodation and ask that the request be documented. White County identifies Leigh Ann Ezra at 574-583-4585 for county ADA/Title VI arrangements, but no source confirms that office as the jail’s clinical or custody intake. Keep both roles separate.
Sources: White County Sheriff current home · White County ADA/Title VI accommodation notice · DOJ ADA information
Report immediate danger, but confirm the PREA channel
Tell any officer immediately about danger or sexual abuse and use the kiosk grievance route when safe. Family may call 574-583-2251 and ask for the Jail Commander. The Sheriff publishes no external, anonymous third-party PREA hotline, audit or retaliation-contact procedure; DOJ’s PREA page explains the national framework only.
Sources: White County Sheriff 2025 inmate handbook · White County Sheriff current home · DOJ PREA overview
Courts, counsel and bond
Verify court authority before acting or paying.
Use MyCase and the Clerk, not jail staff, for hearings
Search MyCase by name or case number and confirm with the Clerk at 574-583-7032. The handbook says courts schedule hearings and jail staff will not give court dates to callers. For another county, the resident must contact that court about a transport order.
Sources: Indiana MyCase · White County Clerk · White County Sheriff 2025 inmate handbook
Identify appointed counsel through the court
Indiana says first determine which office or attorney represents the defendant; if White County charges are pending and no local office contact is published, call the assigned court or Clerk. Attorneys may visit privately or arrange Zoom except during meals and head count. Family should expect confidentiality limits and should not use monitored resident phones for legal strategy.

Verify the court order before paying bond
Check MyCase for the court and bond entry, then call 574-583-2251 and the Clerk at 574-583-7032. The current Sheriff bonding page contains no usable payment method, accepted tender, fee, payer-ID, hours or after-hours instructions. Do not rely on a commercial bonds list or arrive with cash until the jail confirms the exact current procedure.

Arrival, transit, property and release
Plan the physical trip and discharge without invented logistics.
Use the custody address, not the courthouse
For custody, lobby video, kiosk deposits, legal mail or approved property pickup, use the Sheriff/jail campus at 915 Hanawalt St. The courts and Clerk are at 110 N Main Street; Community Corrections is at 306 N Main Street. Call before entering because the jail does not publish a visitor entrance or lobby hours.
Sources: White County Sheriff current home · White County Sheriff 2025 inmate handbook · White County Clerk · White County Community Corrections
Confirm parking and accessibility before departure
The official jail sources publish no visitor lot name, address, hours, accessible route, drop-off point, lobby entrance or overnight-waiting rule. Do not apply courthouse parking information. Call 574-583-2251 and ask where the driver should stop and where the visitor should enter.
Sources: White County Sheriff current home · White County Sheriff 2025 inmate handbook
Reserve door-to-door transit at least 24 hours ahead
White County Public Transit is shared, demand-response, door-to-door service on published weekdays 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. Call 574-583-9119 during those hours at least 24 hours ahead and request 915 Hanawalt St. Same-day additions depend on openings. Ask dispatch for the exact loading point; no fixed jail stop, final walk or guaranteed release pickup is published.
Sources: White County Public Transit · White County Public Transit reservations · White County Council on Aging / Public Transit
Use the resident-initiated weekend property release
A resident may request release of personal property on the kiosk. Pickup is Saturday or Sunday, 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.; all property may be released except one clothing set. The rule does not publish recipient ID, authorization wording, entrance, abandoned-property deadline for ordinary releases or whether staff call when ready. Confirm before travel.
Sources: White County Sheriff 2025 inmate handbook · White County Sheriff current home
Plan around the order, not an estimate
For time-served cases, the handbook says release starts at 8:30 a.m. on the scheduled day after more than 30 days in custody; for stays under 30 days it starts at the arrest-detention time. County property must be returned or release may be delayed. Bond, court-order, transfer and same-day discharge timing are not published; call before dispatching a ride.
Sources: White County Sheriff 2025 inmate handbook · White County Sheriff current home
Confirm balance and pickup procedures
The handbook says emergency money release requires Jail Commander approval and goes only to immediate family. It does not explain how a remaining trust balance is returned at discharge. Residents sentenced to IDOC should release property early; unreleased property is stored 30 days, then destroyed, while legal papers, medication and photo ID may go to IDOC.

Programs and local support
Connect classification-dependent programs to real community contacts.
Treat programs as classification-dependent
The handbook lists television, Chirper devices, Axis tablets, commissary, inmate worker, nicotine pouches, snack packs, toiletries, law library, religious materials and recreation. Availability depends on classification and security. It does not publish GED, substance-use, mental-health, employment, voting, discharge planning or family enrollment contacts.
Start local supervision and service calls before release
For an existing supervision plan call Probation at 574-583-8217 or Community Corrections at 574-583-4175; neither is the jail. For current housing, food, benefits, health and transportation openings, dial 211 or 866-211-9966. IDOC reentry applies to state custody and does not prove a White County Jail program.

Finding someone held here
Use the county system for a recent arrest. A state corrections search covers people in state custody. It generally will not list someone booked into a county jail this week. Bookings, bail, release, and visiting are all handled by White County Sheriff’s Office.

Before you travel, pay, or mail anything
Get two things first: which facility the person is actually in, and their booking or ID number. Almost nothing works without them. Then check this facility’s current instructions — rules and service providers change.
Clear information.
Clear boundaries.
Jail411 is an independent information resource for families and friends. We are not a government agency, jail operator, law firm or live custody-records service.
Can Jail411 tell me if someone is in custody right now?
No. Jail411 does not hold live custody records. Use the official locator for the county, state, federal or ICE system that has the person; start here if you do not know which.
Does posting bond mean the person comes home?
Not always. A probation or parole hold, another county's warrant or an immigration detainer can keep someone in custody after bond is posted. Ask the jail what holds are on the booking before you pay.
What should I confirm before visiting?
The person's current facility, the visiting schedule, approval requirements, accepted identification and arrival instructions. Check the facility page and its official sources before you travel.
What if I find something that needs correcting?
Send us the page and the detail that needs attention. Include the official source when you have one. Do not send private booking documents or other sensitive personal information.
