Ask for the current written rule when Wells County has not published a procedure.

PART 01

Identity and lookup

Practical identity and lookup steps for the current adult jail.

Use the active adult Sheriff jail

Wells County Jail and the Sheriff’s Office share 1615 W. Western Avenue, Bluffton, IN 46714. Use 260-824-3426 for current custody and jail rules. This guide applies only to the adult county jail, not courts, probation, Community Corrections, youth supervision, municipal police, state, federal or immigration custody.

Treat 98 as a published facility figure

The live county page says the current building was constructed in 1985 and houses 98 inmates. That does not establish today’s population, classification placement or an available bed. Ask the jail for an operational question and do not import commercial capacity claims.

Sources: Wells County Sheriff — Jail Information

Confirm custody before paying or traveling

Start with Indiana’s official county-jail public portal and search the exact legal name. Save the displayed spelling, county, booking identifier, charge, bond and facility fields. The Sheriff does not publish a separate local roster or refresh interval, so call 260-824-3426 before travel, mail, a deposit or a paid video visit.

Sources: Indiana county jail public portal · Wells County Sheriff — Jail Information

Work a no-result problem in order

Retry spelling, middle name, hyphenation and recent name changes; then check VINE for custody notifications and MyCase for filed court activity. A no-result can mean intake delay, release, hospital care, youth placement or transfer. Use IDOC, BOP and ICE only for those separate custody systems, then call 260-824-3426.

Match the contact to the task

Use the jail at 260-824-3426 for custody, institutional rules, property, health concerns and release questions. The Sheriff lists regular public office hours Monday–Friday, 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.; those are not published visiting or release hours. Use vendor, court and transit contacts only for their own products. Call 911 for immediate danger.

PART 02

Video visiting

Practical video visiting steps for the current adult jail.

Schedule video at least 24 hours ahead

Wells County directs both onsite and offsite video visits through InmateSales. Schedule at least 24 hours in advance online or call video scheduling at 866-340-7879. Select Wells County Jail and the correct resident; keep the appointment and transaction confirmation. The local page does not publish visiting days, time windows, duration, frequency or holiday exceptions.

Sources: Wells County Sheriff — Jail Information · InmateSales · Combined Public Communications help

Apply the published group limit carefully

For onsite video, the Sheriff states a maximum of two adults and one child, then adds that if the resident has more than one child, all of the children may come together. Because that wording leaves the total child limit and relationship proof unclear, call 260-824-3426 before bringing multiple children. No child may be left unattended on the property or in a vehicle.

Sources: Wells County Sheriff — Jail Information

Prepare for onsite video rules

Secure unauthorized items in the lobby lockers. Keep voices moderate; do not bring contraband; do not be under the influence; follow staff directions and conduct yourself orderly. Cell phones, computers, cameras and audio/video recording are prohibited during an onsite visit. A violation can end the visit and lead to a ban or prosecution.

Sources: Wells County Sheriff — Jail Information

Do not record or create a three-way remote visit

For offsite video, both visitor and resident must remain properly clothed. Exposure, recording, use of an electronic device to record, or a three-way call can end the session and lead to a ban. Disorderly conduct or intoxication can also end access.

Sources: Wells County Sheriff — Jail Information

Dress to the stated standard and bring a quarter

Shirts must have sleeves and cover the midriff and chest; shorts, dresses and skirts must reach the knee; pants must conceal underwear; hats and sunglasses must be removed. A cell phone must be secured in a lobby locker. The locker requires a 25-cent quarter and returns it when the key is used to retrieve items. Staff may deny that day’s visit for improper dress.

Sources: Wells County Sheriff — Jail Information

Confirm ID, approval and exceptions before arrival

CPC says a valid ID matching the InmateSales account and a clear shoulder-up photo are required for video/email account creation. Wells County does not publish accepted ID types, alternatives without ID, visitor-list approval, check-in cutoff, guardian paperwork, former-resident restrictions, infant supplies, disability accommodations or special/long-distance visits. Ask the jail before an exceptional visit.

Separate vendor failure from a jail restriction

Check facility and resident selection, the 24-hour lead time, account/ID match, appointment time, camera, microphone, browser permissions, power and connection. Use 866-340-7879 for video scheduling/support and 260-824-3426 for custody or institutional access. Keep the transaction ID; do not repurchase until the failure and refund eligibility are identified.

PART 03

Phone, text and mail

Practical phone, text and mail steps for the current adult jail.

Fund the correct InmateSales phone product

The Sheriff identifies InmateSales for phone time. CPC distinguishes Direct Pay, owned by family/friends and tied to one phone number, from PIN Debit, which funds the resident’s calling account for permitted numbers. The resident initiates calls. Confirm the Wells facility listing, resident and intended product before payment; rates and local call limits are not published by the Sheriff.

Sources: Wells County Sheriff — Jail Information · InmateSales · CPC prepaid calling options

Keep the transaction ID for phone support

For a blocked call, wrong funded number, balance, refund or transfer question, preserve the exact error, resident name, funded number and transaction ID. CPC lists 877-998-5678 for Direct Pay balance/customer service and 702-829-3001 for InmateSales refund or transfer requests. The Sheriff’s 866-340-7879 number is published for visit scheduling, so do not assume one number serves every product.

Sources: Wells County Sheriff — Jail Information · Combined Public Communications help · CPC prepaid calling options

Treat Chirping as a separate paid product

Wells County verifies InmateSales Chirping text devices. Confirm the resident is listed for that product, recipient/account setup, current rate, monitoring, message limits and any unused-balance procedure before paying. A phone or video balance is not automatically interchangeable with Chirping.

Address personal mail to the jail and resident

For ordinary letters, use Wells County Jail, 1615 W. Western Ave., Bluffton, IN 46714, attention to the resident’s name. Use only letter- or legal-size envelopes and include the sender’s full name and return address. Confirm the exact resident-name or booking-number format at 260-824-3426 before mailing a time-sensitive item.

Sources: Wells County Sheriff — Jail Information

Expect letters and photos to be scanned

Incoming letters and photographs are scanned to the resident’s email account on the kiosk; originals go into personal property. The jail does not provide paper copies. There is no numerical letter limit, but size and content restrictions apply. An envelope containing letters from multiple people is withheld and placed in property.

Sources: Wells County Sheriff — Jail Information

Send only permitted photographs

The Sheriff allows photographs with ordinary mail, scans them and stores originals in property. Photocopies of photos are prohibited, as are images containing nudity or sexually explicit content, racial conflict or discrimination, gang affiliation/signs, or material disruptive to safety. The page does not publish photo size or quantity limits, so confirm before sending a batch.

Sources: Wells County Sheriff — Jail Information

Use publisher-direct books and observe the two-book limit

Paid newspaper or periodical subscriptions and books may be received only directly from the publisher. The resident may possess no more than two books in the cell; old books must be moved to property or donated before new ones enter. Publications are logged, reviewed by the Sheriff, cannot be transferred, and are not forwarded after departure.

Sources: Wells County Sheriff — Jail Information

Avoid the published prohibited contents

Do not send stickers, printed email/internet material, jokes, song lyrics, magazine or newspaper clippings, gang codes, contraband plans, weapon/drug/explosive instructions, escape plans, infectious or offensive material, illegal items, or mail barred by a no-contact order. Mail from another incarcerated person requires prior Jail Commander approval. Rejected material is placed in property pending final disposition.

Sources: Wells County Sheriff — Jail Information

Trace returned or missing mail once

Confirm current custody, the exact address/name format and whether the item was scanned, withheld, placed in property, rejected or returned. Keep a copy and tracking record. Ask the jail for the specific rule and final-disposition process before resending; do not send multiple replacement originals.

PART 04

Money and health

Practical money and health steps for the current adult jail.

Use the live Inmate Canteen link, but verify the conflict

The live jail page links Inmate Canteen for commissary. A current county-site search summary still says JailATM, creating a real provider conflict. Start from the live jail page, verify Wells County Jail and the resident, review fees and retain the transaction ID; call 260-824-3426 before paying if the facility does not appear or another vendor is shown.

Sources: Wells County Sheriff — Jail Information · Inmate Canteen · Wells County site search result for inmate roster

Mail a money order using the published format

The Sheriff says money orders are removed from mail, credited to commissary and receipted to the resident. Make it payable to Wells County Jail and mail it to 1615 W. Western Ave., Bluffton, IN 46714, ATTN: resident name. Personal and traveler’s checks are not accepted for deposit and go into property. Confirm identifiers before sending.

Sources: Wells County Sheriff — Jail Information

Resolve the account that actually received the payment

Separate Inmate Canteen commissary, InmateSales phone, Chirping and video, and mailed money orders. Save resident name, facility, product, amount, date and transaction or postal proof. Use the vendor for payment/account errors and 260-824-3426 for local posting or identity questions. Do not buy a second product to correct the first.

Sources: Wells County Sheriff — Jail Information · Inmate Canteen · Combined Public Communications help

Do not infer care packages or indigent supplies

The reviewed Sheriff page verifies commissary deposits but does not authorize outside care packages or publish approved package vendors, order limits, delivery schedule, indigent hygiene/mail supplies or negative-balance rules. Confirm any package inside the live Wells County facility listing and ask the jail about indigent basics.

Sources: Wells County Sheriff — Jail Information · Inmate Canteen

Send urgent resident health information to the jail

No current public page identifies the jail medical contractor, family medical-information line, sick-call method, copays, medication/glasses delivery, dental care, mental-health or withdrawal escalation, or hospital-notification practice. For an urgent resident concern call 260-824-3426 with full name, booking number if known, symptoms, timing, medication and prescriber. Call 911 for an immediate community emergency.

Sources: Wells County Sheriff — Jail Information · Wells County Health Department

Expect limits on information returned to family

Staff can receive specific safety information even when privacy rules limit what they disclose. Ask how the concern will be documented, how the resident requests care and how the resident may authorize disclosure. Wells County Health Department and the Behavior and Recovery Resource Center are community services, not the jail medical unit.

PART 05

Grievance, accessibility and court

Practical grievance, accessibility and court steps for the current adult jail.

Ask for the resident grievance route in writing

No reviewed local page publishes the inmate grievance form, electronic path, filing deadline, appeal level, emergency grievance or family complaint channel. The resident should request the current jail grievance process and retain dates and responses. A family member may give facts to 260-824-3426 but should not assume that substitutes for the resident’s required grievance or appeal.

Sources: Wells County Sheriff — Jail Information

Request an accommodation before the affected event

No local page publishes an ADA coordinator, visitor accommodation form, interpreter request, accessible-video alternative or response deadline for the jail. Call 260-824-3426 before the visit or service, describe the barrier and requested modification, and ask for the responsible official and written response path. Wells on Wheels separately publishes accessible vehicles and reservation accommodations.

Sources: Wells County Sheriff — Jail Information · ADA.gov law-enforcement accessibility guidance · Wells on Wheels public transportation

Treat PREA reporting as an unresolved local gap

No reviewed Wells County page publishes a jail-specific PREA hotline, outside reporting entity, confidential third-party route or retaliation follow-up. For immediate danger call 911; otherwise call 260-824-3426 and ask for the current PREA reporting and outside-report procedure. Record names, dates and instructions without sending sensitive details through an unverified channel.

Sources: Wells County Sheriff — Jail Information · U.S. DOJ PREA Resource Center

Use MyCase and the correct court for case events

MyCase is for filed case information; custody remains a jail question. Wells Circuit Court is at 102 W Market, Suite 302, 260-824-6485. Wells Superior Court is at 102 W Market Street, third floor, 260-824-6508. Save the cause number, court, next hearing and counsel name; court staff provide legal information, not legal advice.

Sources: Indiana MyCase · Wells Circuit Court · Wells Superior Court · Indiana courts legal-information guide

Keep appointed counsel and civil help separate

Appointment of criminal defense counsel is controlled by the court and case. Obtain the attorney name from the resident, MyCase or the correct court; do not treat Indiana Legal Help as appointed criminal counsel. The dated statewide defender directory is a contact lead only and should be confirmed before use.

Sources: Indiana MyCase · Indiana Judicial Branch — Wells County · Indiana Public Defender Council county directory · Indiana Legal Help — Wells County

Verify the order before choosing a payment path

Read the current bond entry in MyCase and confirm amount, type, conditions, accepted method, payee and release consequence with the Clerk or court before paying. The Sheriff hosts a bondsmen list dated February 24, 2026, but inclusion is not an endorsement and does not prove a bond is available. Keep receipts and identify the exact case.

PART 06

Property, release and travel

Practical property, release and travel steps for the current adult jail.

Confirm who may collect property and when

The mail page says original letters, photographs, rejected items, unaccepted checks and excess books may be placed in personal property. It does not publish release-to-family authorization, identification, pickup hours, storage deadline, destruction/abandonment rule or post-transfer handling. Call 260-824-3426 before travel and obtain the resident’s required authorization.

Sources: Wells County Sheriff — Jail Information

Plan release without a promised time

A court event, posted bond or sentence date does not establish the jail’s physical release time. Confirm custody and release status with 260-824-3426; ask where pickup is permitted, whether property and medication are returned, whether funds are cash/check/card, and what happens after hours. Do not wait on jail property or obstruct an emergency access lane.

Sources: Wells County Sheriff — Jail Information · Indiana MyCase

Use the verified weekly probation reentry link when eligible

Wells County Probation says an officer meets weekly with jail residents nearing release or release to probation to arrange substance-use or mental-health treatment; eligible residents can request the officer through the jail’s in-house system. This is not automatic release, housing or transport. Families can use Indiana 211 and the local counseling directory for separate community planning.

Sources: Wells County Probation Department · Wells County adult probation services · Wells County probation counseling directory · Indiana 211

Do not merge supervision programs into the jail

Community Corrections at 102 W Market Street is a separate supervision agency. A 2020 work-release contract and 2020 juvenile home-detention document are dated evidence only; they do not prove a current jail program, eligibility or youth placement. Courts, probation and JRAC also have separate authority and locations.

Sources: Wells County Community Corrections · Wells County work-release contract dated June 18, 2020 · Wells County juvenile home-detention agreement dated May 31, 2020 · Wells County Justice Reinvestment Advisory Council

Do not borrow courthouse parking instructions

The Circuit Court publishes Market Street and Washington Commons parking for the courthouse, not the jail. No reviewed Sheriff page identifies a jail visitor lot, accessible spaces, drop-off point, lobby entrance, parking hours or after-hours waiting area at 1615 W. Western Avenue. Call 260-824-3426 before driving and follow onsite signs and staff direction.

Sources: Wells County Sheriff — Jail Information · Wells Circuit Court

Reserve Wells on Wheels rather than looking for a bus stop

INDOT identifies Wells on Wheels as the county public-transit system. It is demand response, not a fixed jail route. Call 260-824-4969 or 877-477-4969 at least 24 hours ahead; trips are first-call, first-served. Ask dispatch whether it can serve 1615 W. Western Avenue at the needed time and give the return-trip plan.

Sources: Wells on Wheels public transportation · Wells County Council on Aging public transportation · INDOT Indiana public transit systems

Confirm the exact one-way fare and bring exact change

WOW currently publishes $2 one way within Bluffton, $5 within Wells County, and donation-only travel within the county for riders age 60 or older; children under 12 with an adult are $1. Drivers do not carry change. Confirm the address classification, fare, cancellation terms and return booking when reserving because fares can change.

Sources: Wells on Wheels public transportation · Wells on Wheels rider guide

Request mobility accommodations during the reservation

WOW publishes wheelchair-accessible vehicles, mobility-device securement, service-animal access, portable oxygen/respirator transport, reasonable modifications and Indiana Relay 711. Describe the mobility device and requested accommodation when booking. This transit accommodation does not establish an accessible jail entrance or visitor procedure.

Sources: Wells on Wheels public transportation · Wells on Wheels rider guide

Do not invent a stop, walk or release pickup

No fixed WOW stop, sidewalk route, safe final walk, entrance handoff or guaranteed discharge pickup is published for the jail. Treat a reservation accepted by dispatch as the travel authority, confirm where the driver may load/unload, and arrange a backup ride. Release timing can miss the weekday transit window.

PART 07

Local planning and final check

Practical local planning and final check steps for the current adult jail.

Use local food contacts as planning leads

For a meal near Bluffton, the county tourism directory lists Richards Restaurant at 508 Charles Deam Court and other Bluffton options. For assistance, the City’s Wells County Food Resources sheet lists food banks and hot meals with schedules and eligibility. Confirm hours and access the same day; none is a Sheriff endorsement or guaranteed service.

Sources: Visit Wells County Bluffton dining directory · Richards Restaurant listing · City of Bluffton Wells County food resources · City of Bluffton assistance programs

Confirm lodging price and availability directly

Visit Wells County lists Americas Best Value Inn & Suites at 100 Charles Deam Court, 260-824-5553, and Comfort Inn at 1782 N Main Street, 260-824-4455. Call the property for same-day availability, total rate, identification, accessibility, cancellation and transportation. The jail does not arrange or endorse lodging.

Sources: Visit Wells County places to stay · Comfort Inn Near Ouabache State Park · Americas Best Value Inn & Suites Bluffton

Use community resources without confusing authority

Indiana 211 can route needs; Wells County Public Library can help with internet and local information; Behavior and Recovery Resource Center provides community mental-wellness resources; the Health Department provides public-health services. None controls jail custody, clinical decisions, visits, bond or release. Use 988 or 911 when the situation meets those crisis thresholds.

Sources: Indiana 211 · Wells County Public Library · Wells County Behavior and Recovery Resource Center · Wells County Health Department

Recheck the details that can change

On the day of action, confirm custody, visit approval, resident identifiers, vendor listing, court order, jail entrance/parking, WOW reservation and release status. Keep screenshots, receipts and names. If a published page conflicts with live staff instruction, ask for the current written rule and record the date rather than silently merging the two.

Finding someone held here

Use the county system for a recent arrest. A state corrections search covers people in state custody. It generally will not list someone booked into a county jail this week. Bookings, bail, release, and visiting are all handled by Wells County Sheriff’s Office.

Before you travel, pay, or mail anything

Get two things first: which facility the person is actually in, and their booking or ID number. Almost nothing works without them. Then check this facility’s current instructions — rules and service providers change.

Clear information.
Clear boundaries.

Jail411 is an independent information resource for families and friends. We are not a government agency, jail operator, law firm or live custody-records service.

Can Jail411 tell me if someone is in custody right now?

No. Jail411 does not hold live custody records. Use the official locator for the county, state, federal or ICE system that has the person; start here if you do not know which.

Does posting bond mean the person comes home?

Not always. A probation or parole hold, another county's warrant or an immigration detainer can keep someone in custody after bond is posted. Ask the jail what holds are on the booking before you pay.

What should I confirm before visiting?

The person's current facility, the visiting schedule, approval requirements, accepted identification and arrival instructions. Check the facility page and its official sources before you travel.

What if I find something that needs correcting?

Send us the page and the detail that needs attention. Include the official source when you have one. Do not send private booking documents or other sensitive personal information.
