PART 01

Start here

Practical start here instructions for the active adult jail.

Use the active Jackson Street detention center

Washington County Detention Center is the active adult Sheriff jail at 801 S Jackson Street, Suite 100, Salem, IN 47167. Call 812-883-5999 and choose option 2 for jail questions. Administrative office hours shown on the site are not visiting hours.

Separate the active center from three former jails

The current jail has operated at the Justice Center since 1986 and was expanded in 2014. The Sheriff history page describes earlier Water Street jails and the 1881-1986 jail at Main and Poplar; none is the current destination or mail address.

Sources: Washington County Detention Center · Washington County Tourism directory

Treat 204 as capacity, not live population

The current Sheriff page states a 204-inmate capacity. The live roster changes and the Sheriff does not publish staffed-bed availability, a current headcount or a promise that every person arrested in the county is housed here.

Sources: Washington County Detention Center · Washington County Detention Center inmate roster

Start with the Sheriff's current roster

Open the Sheriff's roster and choose Current Inmates. A record may show booked name, booking number, booking date, charges, arresting agency and bond information. Save the exact spelling, booking number, case numbers and court before paying or mailing.

Sources: Washington County Detention Center inmate roster · Washington County Sheriff's Office FAQ

Check the 48-hour release list

If the person disappeared from Current Inmates, check the Sheriff's 48 Hour Release page. A posted release does not explain whether the person bonded out, completed a sentence, entered supervision, went to another jail, hospital, IDOC, federal custody or immigration custody.

Call when the result is missing or stale

Try full and shortened names, search MyCase for the case and call 812-883-5999 option 2. VINE and the Indiana portal are useful cross-checks, but the local roster warns against relying on web information for a decision.

Send each question to the office that controls it

Use 812-883-5999 option 2 for custody, housing, mail, release and jail policy; 812-883-5748 for Clerk records; 812-883-5302 for Circuit Court; 812-883-4949 for Superior Court; and 812-883-5896 for the Public Defender. Court and administrative office hours do not set jail access.

PART 02

Visits and communication

Practical visits and communication instructions for the active adult jail.

Personal visits are currently online only

The current local visitation page says inmate visitation is only available through the online InmateSales service. Do not promise a lobby booth, walk-in visit or face-to-face room merely because CPC offers those modes at some facilities.

Sources: Washington County Detention Center visitation · Combined Public Communications family support

Build the InmateSales account before scheduling

Create or sign in at InmateSales, select Indiana and the exact Washington County facility and person, request access, then review the facility policies displayed before buying or scheduling. CPC says a clear shoulder-up photo and a valid ID matching the account are required.

Sources: Washington County Detention Center visitation · Combined Public Communications family support · InmateSales

Use the local ID and minor rules

The inmate rules require every visitor to have valid photo ID and be at least 18; anyone under 18 must be accompanied by a legal guardian. The pages do not define alternate ID, proof of guardianship or whether every minor needs a separate approved account.

Sources: Washington County Detention Center rules · Washington County Detention Center visitation

Former residents need time or approval

A former inmate may not visit until out of jail for at least 1 year unless the Sheriff or Jail Commander approves. The department may refuse or stop a visit, and disruptive conduct may cause removal or a future ban.

Sources: Washington County Detention Center rules · Washington County Detention Center staff

Confirm days, lead time and price in the live account

The local pages do not publish current family days, hours, duration, frequency, scheduling cutoff, cost, cancellation deadline or refund rule. Use the policy shown after facility approval and call CPC video scheduling at 866-340-7879 for account scheduling; use 812-883-5999 option 2 for a jail denial.

Sources: Washington County Detention Center visitation · Combined Public Communications family support · Washington County Sheriff's Office FAQ

Keep counsel, clergy and special visits separate

The public pages do not publish a confidential attorney-video path, clergy approval, long-distance exception, emergency family visit or disability accommodation process. Counsel and special visitors should call 812-883-5999 option 2 before relying on the family workflow.

Sources: Washington County Detention Center rules · Washington County Sheriff's Office FAQ · Washington County Public Defender

Prepare the device and identity before the session

CPC says remote video requires a computer with webcam and internet or a mobile device with internet; it recommends Google Chrome. Verify camera, microphone, speaker, battery, bandwidth, ID and account name before the scheduled time.

Sources: Combined Public Communications family support · InmateSales

Split technical failure from jail approval

For a failed visit, keep the scheduled date and time, resident, device, error, screenshots and receipt. Call CPC video scheduling at 866-340-7879 for login or technical trouble; call 812-883-5999 option 2 for housing, discipline or approval. No local failed-session credit rule is published.

Sources: Combined Public Communications family support · Washington County Detention Center visitation · Washington County Sheriff's Office FAQ

Choose PIN Debit or Prepaid deliberately

The Sheriff confirms CPC/InmateSales phone service. PIN Debit lets the resident call any number permitted by the system; Prepaid is tied to the funded telephone number. Fund at the Justice Center lobby kiosk, InmateSales online or 877-998-5678.

Sources: Washington County Detention Center inmate phone · Combined Public Communications family support

Use the posted resident-phone window as a boundary

The inmate rules say cell-block phones and televisions normally turn on at 7 a.m. and off at 10:45 p.m., unless the Sheriff or Jail Commander changes the rule. Access can also depend on classification or discipline, so this is not a promised call time.

Sources: Washington County Detention Center rules · Washington County Detention Center inmate phone

Keep vendor billing separate from jail restrictions

Save the called number, date, time, account type, charge and exact error. Ask CPC at 877-998-5678 about billing, account or blocking; ask 812-883-5999 option 2 about housing or discipline. The Sheriff says purchased phone time cannot move to commissary or be refunded when the person leaves.

Sources: Washington County Detention Center inmate phone · Washington County Detention Center rules · Washington County Sheriff's Office FAQ

Do not assume every resident has texting

The FAQ says some inmates can send and receive messages on a texting device depending on incarceration level. It does not name the local messaging provider, price, funding account, delivery time or photo-message rules; confirm the live resident menu before paying.

PART 03

Mail, photos and packages

Practical mail, photos and packages instructions for the active adult jail.

Use the Suite 100 mail format exactly

Put the sender's true full name and complete return address on the envelope. Address it to the resident's full name including middle initial, C/O Washington County Detention Center, 801 Jackson Street Suite 100, Salem, IN 47167. Third-party mail is not allowed.

Sources: Washington County Detention Center incoming mail regulations · Washington County Detention Center rules

Keep letters plain and attachment-free

The jail requires white paper and plain blue or black ink. It prohibits glue, tape, stickers, lipstick, glitter, staples, paperclips, post-it notes, paint, fragrance, foreign substances, blank paper, stamps, envelopes, drawings and coded or gang material. Typed-letter language conflicts between pages, so confirm before sending a printed letter.

Sources: Washington County Detention Center incoming mail regulations · Washington County Detention Center rules

Understand return versus property handling

Mail without the required sender name and address is marked Return to Sender, while the regulations say other unacceptable mail is placed in the resident's property for release. The rules also say residents receive contents, not envelopes. Ask about irreplaceable originals before mailing.

Sources: Washington County Detention Center incoming mail regulations · Washington County Detention Center rules

Separate books, photographs, magazines and packages

Books must be mailed directly from a publisher and require Jail Commander approval; packages need Jail Commander approval. Photographs are not accepted by physical mail and must use the kiosk path. One page says publisher periodicals may be accepted while the inmate rules say no magazines by any means, so confirm before ordering.

PART 04

Money and commissary

Practical money and commissary instructions for the active adult jail.

Use the correct trust-deposit path

Family may use the Stellar lobby kiosk 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with a $3 fee, JailATM online, or a money order sent under the published mail rules. Confirm the resident identity before paying and do not put cash or a personal check in mail.

Sources: Washington County Detention Center commissary · Washington County Detention Center incoming mail regulations · JailATM

Preserve the receipt and identify the platform

For a missing deposit, keep the resident's exact name, booking number, amount, date, platform, confirmation and payment trace. Ask JailATM about its online transaction or jail staff at 812-883-5999 option 2 about the resident ledger; do not send medical details by Sheriff email.

Sources: Washington County Detention Center commissary · JailATM · Washington County Sheriff's Office contact

Know the resident ordering cycle

The rules say ordering is open Monday and Thursday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.; distribution is Tuesday and Friday when staff time permits. A missing-item complaint must be filed within 1 hour of distribution. Stock substitutions and price changes can occur.

Sources: Washington County Detention Center rules · Washington County Detention Center commissary

Track indigent supplies and remaining funds

Indigent packs are distributed every 2 weeks, and writing supplies plus postage for at least 2 letters per week are available after the published indigency test. After debts are collected, remaining funds are released by check or prepaid debit card; the two pages use different instrument wording.

PART 05

Health, safety and complaints

Practical health, safety and complaints instructions for the active adult jail.

Use the kiosk for routine care and staff for emergencies

A resident needing emergency treatment must notify an officer immediately; emergency care is available 24 hours a day. Routine care uses a Sick Call Request on the kiosk, the physician visits weekly and medical staff are to respond to nonemergency requests within 72 hours.

Sources: Washington County Detention Center rules

Do not let inability to pay stop a request

The published co-pays are $10 for a doctor visit, $5 for a prescription and $25 for a pregnancy test. Indigent residents still receive medical attention, with the fee posted to the account and deducted before commissary ordering.

Sources: Washington County Detention Center rules · Washington County Detention Center commissary

Ask the resident to use the clinical request path

The rules describe scheduled individual medication doses and physician-directed eye and emergency dental care. They do not publish intake-medication delivery, pharmacy, glasses drop-off, outside-prescription acceptance or current clinical contractor. Family should call 812-883-5999 option 2 for the current secure process.

Sources: Washington County Detention Center rules · Washington County Sheriff's Office FAQ

Use a phone, not ordinary email, for sensitive facts

The Sheriff warns that its ordinary email is not secure for medical or other sensitive information. Call 812-883-5999 option 2 with urgent facts and ask how to reach clinical staff; staff may receive information even when privacy rules limit what they can disclose to family.

Sources: Washington County Sheriff's Office contact · Washington County Sheriff's Office FAQ · Washington County Detention Center rules

Escalate by urgency without substituting 988 for the jail

For an incarcerated person's immediate safety concern, call 812-883-5999 option 2 and state the behavior, words, timing, medications and location if known. Indiana 988 may support a caller outside custody, but it is not the jail's clinical request line or proof of action inside.

Sources: Washington County Sheriff's Office FAQ · Indiana 988 · Washington County Detention Center rules

Use the kiosk, then the written appeal

The grievance form is on the kiosk; if unavailable, the resident may request paper. The Jail Lieutenant has 7 business days for the initial response. An appeal goes to the Jail Commander and Chief Deputy, who have 15 business days; their decision is final under the posted rules.

Sources: Washington County Detention Center rules · Washington County Detention Center staff

Request a jail accommodation directly

The rules prohibit disability discrimination, and the county publishes broad ADA plans, but no detention-specific coordinator, request form, response deadline or appeal appears on the jail pages. Call 812-883-5999 option 2 before a visit or program need and preserve the request and response.

Sources: Washington County Detention Center rules · Washington County ADA Plan and Title VI · DOJ ADA information · Sheriff website accessibility page

Use the emergency grievance and demand a safe route

A sexual-abuse or misconduct grievance may be filed at any time; an emergency grievance is to be handled immediately and an allegation against an officer must not be routed to that officer. The final agency decision may take 90 days plus a noticed extension up to 70 days.

Sources: Washington County Detention Center rules · DOJ PREA overview

Confirm confidential and third-party PREA reporting

The public jail pages do not publish an outside confidential PREA line or a family third-party reporting destination. A family member should call 812-883-5999 option 2, ask for the PREA reporting channel and avoid sending sensitive details through ordinary email.

PART 07

Arrival, transit and reentry

Practical arrival, transit and reentry instructions for the active adult jail.

Use the Justice Center address and verify the jail entrance

Navigate to 801 S Jackson Street, Salem, IN 47167. The jail, Superior Court, Clerk and Circuit Court occupy different suites in the Justice Center. No official page names a visitor lot, parking hours, accessible spaces, waiting area or release door; call 812-883-5999 option 2 before travel.

Sources: Washington County Detention Center incoming mail regulations · Washington County Clerk of Courts · Washington County Circuit Court · Washington County Superior Court · Washington County Sheriff's Office FAQ

Reserve SITS and name the destination precisely

Southern Indiana Transit System serves Washington County by demand-response door-to-door service. Call 812-738-1681 or 866-738-1681 and give 801 S Jackson Street, Suite 100, Salem, the appointment or desired pickup time, return time and mobility device. A ride is not guaranteed until dispatch confirms it.

Sources: Southern Indiana Transit System · INDOT public transit systems · Washington County Detention Center incoming mail regulations

Do not invent a stop, walk or release pickup

SITS says a driver escorts a rider from the main entrance at origin to the main entrance at destination, but the jail has not named which Justice Center door counts as its entrance. No fixed jail stop, final walking route, same-day availability or guaranteed 8 a.m.-11 p.m. release pickup is published.

Sources: Southern Indiana Transit System · Washington County Detention Center offender release times · Washington County Sheriff's Office FAQ

Use mileage fare only after dispatch confirms the trip

SITS publishes $2 one way for 0-10 miles, $3 for 11-20 miles and $4 for more than 20 miles, with exact payment because drivers do not make change. The exact jail fare depends on origin and dispatch; no fare is assigned here.

Sources: Southern Indiana Transit System

Check seven actual service dates

The official operator lists Monday-Friday service from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. and no weekend service. For October 1-7, 2026, ordinary service is supported on October 1, 2, 5, 6 and 7; October 3 and 4 are weekend nonservice dates. Reservation capacity can still close.

Sources: Southern Indiana Transit System · INDOT public transit systems

Use local directories and verify hours yourself

Washington County Tourism lists food and lodging without guaranteeing today's hours, price or room availability. Mama Rosa's is listed at 201 Arthur Street, 812-883-6296; Lisa's Farmhouse Market is listed at 202 N Main Street. Call before relying on either and use the tourism lodging category for current choices.

Sources: Washington County Tourism directory · Washington County Tourism: Mama Rosa's · Washington County Tourism local food options

Use 211 for needs outside custody authority

Indiana 211 can connect a family or returning resident with food, housing, utilities, health care and transportation. The Washington County Health Department is a community resource, not the jail medical contractor; Indiana Legal Help is civil legal information, not appointed criminal defense.

Sources: Indiana 211 · Indiana 211 Programs and Services Guide · Washington County Health Department · Indiana Legal Help

Programs inside are voluntary and subject to operation

The posted rules describe weekly Alcoholics Anonymous, church services on Saturday, Tuesday and alternating Monday, Residents Encounter Christ, library distribution and games. The page does not publish eligibility, enrollment, language access, current cancellations or completion records.

Sources: Washington County Detention Center rules

Keep Community Corrections outside the jail boundary

Probation and Community Corrections at 806 Martinsburg Road, Suite 203, 812-883-1446 administer pretrial supervision, day reporting, probation and Community Transition functions under the courts. They do not set jail visiting, mail, phone, money or release-door procedures.

Sources: Washington County Probation and Community Corrections · Washington County Community Corrections Advisory Board

Keep other custody systems separate

Salem Police or another arresting agency does not prove present housing. Youth matters, another county jail, IDOC prison or parole, BOP custody and ICE detention each use separate locators and rules. An outside hospital does not become the jail or disclose custody status.

Sources: Washington County Detention Center inmate roster · Indiana Department of Correction · Indiana incarcerated-person search · Federal Bureau of Prisons inmate locator · ICE Online Detainee Locator · Washington County Probation and Community Corrections

Reconfirm high-consequence details on the day

Before travel, payment, a child's visit, legal mailing, medication handoff, bond or pickup, recheck the roster and call the responsible office. Save the staff name, date, time, exact instruction, receipt and court order; a website summary cannot guarantee a same-day operational decision.

Before you travel, pay, or mail anything

Get two things first: which facility the person is actually in, and their booking or ID number. Almost nothing works without them. Then check this facility’s current instructions — rules and service providers change.

Clear information.
Clear boundaries.

Jail411 is an independent information resource for families and friends. We are not a government agency, jail operator, law firm or live custody-records service.

Can Jail411 tell me if someone is in custody right now?

No. Jail411 does not hold live custody records. Use the official locator for the county, state, federal or ICE system that has the person; start here if you do not know which.

Does posting bond mean the person comes home?

Not always. A probation or parole hold, another county's warrant or an immigration detainer can keep someone in custody after bond is posted. Ask the jail what holds are on the booking before you pay.

What should I confirm before visiting?

The person's current facility, the visiting schedule, approval requirements, accepted identification and arrival instructions. Check the facility page and its official sources before you travel.

What if I find something that needs correcting?

Send us the page and the detail that needs attention. Include the official source when you have one. Do not send private booking documents or other sensitive personal information.
