Active jail identity
The active adult Sheriff jail is at 206 E. Gale Street, Angola, IN 46703. Call 260-668-1000 ext. 5000 for jail questions. The current Sheriff page says the 1992 facility was designed for 130 and modified to house 178 inmates; this describes the building, not a promise that 178 beds are operational or available.

Use the official inmate search
Use the Jail Inmate search in the official Steuben County Sheriff app. Search with full legal name and spelling variants; save the booked spelling, booking date, charge source and booking identifier shown. Reconfirm with 260-668-1000 ext. 5000 before travel, mail or payment because no update interval is published.

No result, transfer or release
If the app shows no result, try aliases and date-of-birth context, then check MyCase and SAVIN. A missing result can reflect booking lag, release, hospital care, youth placement or transfer. Use IDOC only for state custody, BOP only for federal custody and ICE only when immigration detention is plausible.

Use the correct office
Jail: 260-668-1000 ext. 5000. Communications/E911 non-emergency: 260-668-1000 ext. 4000. Clerk: ext. 2240. Circuit Court: ext. 2000. Superior Court: ext. 2600. Public Defender: ext. 2700. Prosecutor: ext. 2400. The prosecutor represents the State, not the detained person.

Do not mix systems
The jail at 206 E. Gale Street is separate from the historic jail, Judicial Center, Public Defender, Prosecutor, Community Corrections, Probation, youth placements, municipal police, IDOC, BOP and ICE. An arrest or case record does not prove current housing.

Visit, call and communicate
Rules, setup and failure handling
Video visitation only
The official January 2023 rules say Steuben uses InmateSales video. Onsite sessions use lobby terminals; remote sessions use an Android/Apple device or laptop. The rules allow 2 onsite visits per week and unlimited remote visits, subject to scheduling, conduct and inmate availability.
Sources: Steuben County Jail visitation rules · InmateSales
Schedule within the published window
Schedule through InmateSales at least 24 hours before the appointment and no more than 1 week ahead. List additional visitors with the primary visitor. Preserve the confirmation and check whether court, trustee work, attorney visits, Bible study, chemical-dependency programming or another activity makes the inmate unavailable.
Sources: Steuben County Jail visitation rules · InmateSales
Adults, minors and identification
Onsite visitors age 18 or older must show valid photo ID such as a driver license, state ID or military ID. The PDF conflicts on minors: one clause says an adult must accompany them; another requires a parent or legal guardian. Use the stricter rule and ask what guardianship proof is accepted. Active felony probation/parole disqualifies a visitor; a person released from this jail must wait 60 days.
Sources: Steuben County Jail visitation rules
Dress, arrival and conduct
Wear undergarments and clothing that is not see-through, skin-tight, a tank top or gang-related; skirts or dresses must be below the knee and shorts at mid-thigh or below. People entering are subject to search and audio/video surveillance. Arriving after the start may cancel entry. Staff may deny, disconnect or cancel; disruption, intoxication, insufficient ID, damage or contraband can cause permanent restrictions.
Sources: Steuben County Jail visitation rules
Price, no-show and failed video
The PDF states $0.20 per minute up to 20 minutes and elsewhere $4.00 for 20 minutes; review live checkout. A visitor no-show receives no refund. For failure, record date, time, confirmation, error, device and whether either side connected. Contact InmateSales and jail; request rebooking/refund review without promising either.

Confirm the phone provider before funding
No current primary local source identifies the voice-call provider. Do not assume that InmateSales video means InmateSales voice service. Ask the jail for provider name, account type and the exact booked-person identifier, then use only the confirmed provider’s current surface.

Blocked or failed calls
For no connection, one-way audio, unexpected charge or a blocked number, save the number, time, message and transaction ID. Check carrier spam blocks and account balance, then contact the confirmed provider and jail. Ask how transfer or release affects unused funds.

Messages, tablets and media
No current primary local source verifies electronic messages, tablets, paid photos or media. Confirm the exact product in the booked person’s account before purchase. A vendor’s general menu does not prove Steuben enabled that product.

Mail, publications and money
Keep channels and providers distinct
Confirm personal mail before sending
The active jail is at 206 E. Gale Street, but no current primary source publishes the personal-mail address format or whether a processor is used. Before sending, ask for full address, booked identifier, envelope/postcard rule, page/photo limits, ink restrictions, return-address requirement and rejection handling.
Sources: Steuben County Sheriff — Jail · Steuben County Sheriff — Contact · Steuben County confinement officer application and job description
Keep legal mail distinct
Do not send legal mail using an unconfirmed personal-mail format. Counsel should confirm the legal-mail address, required markings, attorney verification, privileged opening process and rejection/appeal path with jail staff. Save tracking and a copy of the cover page.
Sources: Steuben County Sheriff — Contact · Steuben County confinement officer application and job description · Steuben County Public Defender
Books, publications and photos
No current primary source publishes publisher-only rules, hardback/softcover limits, religious-text handling, subscriptions or photo size/content limits. Ask before ordering; record the seller, tracking number and jail answer. Do not rely on third-party jail directories as policy.
Sources: Steuben County Sheriff — Contact · Steuben County confinement officer application and job description
Packages, clothing and medication
No general package or clothing procedure is published. The lobby medication-disposal dropbox accepts pills/tablets for destruction and rejects liquids and needles; it is not a route to deliver an inmate’s medication. Call clinical/jail staff before bringing any medication, glasses or device.

Verify deposits at the point of use
eXpress Account lists Steuben County (Angola), IN during registration, but the Sheriff site does not confirm the current deposit provider. Before paying, confirm the booked name/number, provider, method and recipient with the jail. Do not use a search result or third-party directory alone.

Commissary and meal-service boundary
County minutes approved Canteen for jail meal services on June 2, 2026. That does not prove Canteen operates commissary or deposits. Ask the jail for the current commissary provider, order schedule, spending limit, eligible products, care packages and indigent-supply process.

Receipts, reversals and remaining funds
Save confirmation, amount, date, last 4 card digits and booked identifier. If funds do not post, contact the confirmed provider before repeating payment and ask the jail to verify the account. Ask separately about fees, chargebacks, transfer, release and remaining-balance checks.

Care, grievances and safety
Clinical communication and rights routes
Medical, dental and urgent care
The Sheriff page says the jail arranges routine care and 24-hour emergency medical, dental and psychological care. For an immediate threat, call 911; for a person already in custody, call 260-668-1000 ext. 5000 and describe the observable concern without demanding protected details. Ask staff to document and route it clinically.

Medication, glasses and records
Do not place medication in mail or the disposal dropbox. Ask jail staff how the prescriber/pharmacy is verified, whether original containers are accepted, and how to handle time-critical doses, glasses, mobility devices, dental needs and records authorization. The September 15, 2026 agenda mentions inmate copay policy discussion but publishes no rule or amount.

Mental health and community continuity
Use the jail line for a person in custody and explain urgent behavior. Northeastern Center’s community line is 1-800-790-0118, and Angola outpatient is 260-665-9494 at 3265 Intertech Drive; these are community resources, not jail-status or jail-treatment lines. Ask about release continuity, prescriptions and consent.

Grievances and escalation
The officer job description says staff periodically respond to detainee grievances through chain of command, but the form and deadlines are not public. The detained person should request the current written procedure, keep dates and copies, identify requested relief and ask how to appeal. Families should ask the Jail Commander where a welfare concern belongs.

Disability access and communication
Ask the jail for the facility-specific ADA request route before a visit or custody need. State the barrier, requested modification, communication method and deadline; keep a copy. The county ADA page and DOJ Title II material give general context but do not supply a published jail decision or appeal process.

Sexual safety and PREA
For immediate danger, alert jail staff or 911. No Steuben-specific confidential, anonymous, external or third-party PREA channel was located. Ask the jail for those options, how evidence and medical needs are preserved, and how retaliation is reported. The national PREA directory is not proof of a local route.

Courts, counsel and release
Case control, bond, property and discharge
Case, hearing and court offices
Use MyCase for case number, court, filed charges and hearing dates, then confirm time/location with the assigned court. Circuit and Superior Courts are at 305 S. Martha Street, not the jail. Clerk records can lag custody; jail custody can change without resolving the case.

Counsel and confidential access
Steuben County Public Defender is at 205 S. Martha Street Suite 109, 260-668-1000 ext. 2700. Appointment is case-specific; the prosecutor cannot advise the defense. Counsel should confirm confidential call/visit and document procedures directly with the jail, especially for an urgent filing.

Bond without mixing court payments
The confinement-officer description confirms jail staff perform bonding, receive money and issue receipts, but no public instructions identify eligible methods or hours. Call the jail and Clerk with the case number and exact order. Pay Location Code 1595 is published for court costs/fines; do not assume it accepts jail bond.

Property release
Ask whether the detained person must sign an authorization, what exact item may be released, accepted recipient ID, pickup hours and whether partial pickup is allowed. Do not travel until staff confirms the property is ready. Obtain a receipt and ask about storage/disposal deadlines.
Sources: Steuben County confinement officer application and job description · Steuben County Sheriff — Contact
Release and pickup planning
Release time, exit door and notice are not published. Before travel, ask whether court, warrant, immigration, transport or another hold remains; what clothing, medication, documents, property and money will leave with the person; and where a ride may wait. Do not promise a time or wait at an unconfirmed door.

Programs and reentry boundaries
The jail page mentions education, chemical-dependency, Bible study and trustee activity but does not publish eligibility or schedule. Community Corrections at 104 E. Gale Street and Probation at 205 S. Martha Street are separate court-supervision systems. Confirm any post-release obligation from the written court order.

Arrival, parking and transit
Reach the correct place without invented paths
Arrival destination
Use 206 E. Gale Street only after confirming the task and appointment. The historic jail at 201 S. Wayne Street stopped jail use in 1990. Courts are at 305 S. Martha Street; Community Corrections is at 104 E. Gale Street. Similar names and nearby addresses do not make them interchangeable.

Parking and entrance
No official visitor lot, accessible space, lobby entrance, curbside waiting rule or public hours are published. Call 260-668-1000 ext. 5000 before driving; ask for the named lot or entrance for the exact task and whether the lobby terminal appointment changes access. Do not infer parking from a map.

Finding someone held here
Use the county system for a recent arrest. A state corrections search covers people in state custody. It generally will not list someone booked into a county jail this week. Bookings, bail, release, and visiting are all handled by Steuben County Sheriff’s Office.

Before you travel, pay, or mail anything
Get two things first: which facility the person is actually in, and their booking or ID number. Almost nothing works without them. Then check this facility’s current instructions — rules and service providers change.
Clear information.
Clear boundaries.
Jail411 is an independent information resource for families and friends. We are not a government agency, jail operator, law firm or live custody-records service.
Can Jail411 tell me if someone is in custody right now?
No. Jail411 does not hold live custody records. Use the official locator for the county, state, federal or ICE system that has the person; start here if you do not know which.
Does posting bond mean the person comes home?
Not always. A probation or parole hold, another county's warrant or an immigration detainer can keep someone in custody after bond is posted. Ask the jail what holds are on the booking before you pay.
What should I confirm before visiting?
The person's current facility, the visiting schedule, approval requirements, accepted identification and arrival instructions. Check the facility page and its official sources before you travel.
What if I find something that needs correcting?
Send us the page and the detail that needs attention. Include the official source when you have one. Do not send private booking documents or other sensitive personal information.
