- Match the service owner
Use Securus for communication, JPay/local methods for trust and the court/Clerk for orders and bond.
- Confirm the last mile
Reserve ShelbyGo both directions and verify the exact public jail door.
Confirm the adult Sheriff system
Separate the current bed from court, supervision and every outside system
Use the active adult Sheriff jail at 107 West Taylor Street
Shelby County Jail / Criminal Justice Center is the Sheriff-operated adult county jail at 107 W. Taylor St., Shelbyville, IN 46176. Jail information is 317-392-6405, option 4; Sheriff administration is 317-392-6345. The Sheriff says the 80,000-square-foot center opened in 1994, also houses Sheriff and Shelbyville Police offices, and houses more than 200 people; that description is not a certified bed count.
Use this guide only for adults physically held by the Sheriff. Court Services/Community Corrections, probation, youth programs, municipal police, the courthouse, IDOC prisons, federal prisons and ICE custody are separate systems. A court case, arresting agency or hold does not by itself identify the current bed.

Search the Sheriff-linked roster, then call when the result is unclear
The official county and Superior Court pages link to the Shelby County OMS/JailTracker roster. Search the legal name and retain the exact displayed name, jacket or inmate number, booking date, charges, bond and release/hold information. The county says the jacket number is required for JPay, Securus and AllPaid bond transactions.
If there is no result, retry spelling, hyphens, prior names and a shorter first-name form; allow for booking, release or transfer lag. Then call 317-392-6405, option 4. Use MyCase for the court case, IDOC for state custody, BOP for federal prison and ICE for immigration detention. Do not pay or mail from a screenshot alone.

Get approved before a visit
Use the county-linked Securus workflow and confirm unpublished exceptions
Get Securus approval before relying on a visit
The county says visitors must create a Securus account, upload a clear government ID and a clear self-photo, and use a registration name that matches the ID. Jail staff must approve the account. After approval, the person in custody is allowed one free onsite visit per week at the Criminal Justice Center; remote video visits are paid and may be scheduled through Securus.
The county does not publish the onsite days, time slots, duration, arrival cutoff, housing-unit schedule or remote price. Select Shelby County inside Securus, use only the options the live account displays, and call 317-392-6405 option 4 before traveling. A platform slot does not waive jail approval, movement or lockdown restrictions.

Confirm minors, clothing, belongings and ID exceptions directly
The public page establishes photo-ID review and exact name matching, but does not publish minimum age, guardian documentation, number of children, maximum participants, alternate IDs, expired/out-of-state ID handling, dress code, belongings, infant supplies, former-inmate restrictions, special/long-distance visits or an onsite check-in deadline.
Call the jail before registering if any exception applies. Ask separately for a visitor disability accommodation. Do not copy rules from an Indiana prison or another county; Shelby County approval controls this jail.

Prepare Securus video and keep proof when it fails
Use the facility-linked Securus workflow, not an unrelated search result. Upload the required ID/self-photo, wait for jail approval, select the correct person by name or jacket number and confirm whether the account offers onsite, remote or both. Test camera, microphone, speaker, app/browser, notifications, charging power and a stable connection.
For rejection, pending approval, disconnect, frozen video or a disputed charge, save the account email/phone, scheduled time, transaction record, device and exact error without saving private conversation content. Contact Securus at 972-734-1111 or 800-844-6591. The county does not publish cancellation, no-show or refund timing.

Keep communication, mail and money separate
Match the account, address, identifier and failure owner
Use the Securus account that matches the calling task
Shelby County links families to Securus, but its jail page does not spell out local call hours, rates or account types. Securus describes AdvanceConnect as a prepaid family account and Securus Debit as the incarcerated person's service account; availability remains facility-specific. Confirm the Shelby County offering in the live account before funding.
For a blocked number, no ring, rejected payment or unexpected disconnect, check the balance, phone ownership, facility blocks and call-forwarding/VoIP issues, then contact Securus. Keep the called number, date/time, transaction and error. Family calls may be monitored or recorded; use counsel's arranged channel for legal strategy.

Use the county-published Taylor Street mailing address
The county publishes: [First and last name of person in custody], Shelby County Jail, 107 W. Taylor St., Shelbyville, IN 46176. It expressly requires the first and last name. Confirm the jacket number with the jail and ask whether it should also appear before mailing anything valuable or time-sensitive.
No reviewed local page publishes envelope size, paper/card rules, page limits, return-address rule, scanning vendor, delivery timing, rejection notice or return/destruction practice. Send plain correspondence only after confirmation; never include cash or contraband.
Do not assume family-mail rules protect legal mail
Shelby County's public jail page gives only one mailing address and does not publish a separate attorney/legal-mail format, required privileged-mail markings, opening procedure, delivery log, original-document rule, certified-mail acceptance or privileged electronic option.
Counsel should call 317-392-6405 option 4 before sending a deadline-sensitive original and ask for the exact addressee, jacket number, exterior markings and delivery method. Families should not label ordinary mail “legal.” The Public Defender office may receive client mail addressed to the assigned attorney, but that office is not the jail mailroom.

Treat books, photos and packages as unapproved until confirmed
No current local source publishes photo count/size, Polaroid or internet-print rules, books/magazines, publisher-only ordering, package programs, subscription handling or rejected-item disposition. Do not rely on Securus or JPay availability as proof that physical items are accepted.
Call the jail with the person's name and jacket number before ordering. Ask whether the item must come from a publisher or approved seller, the allowed quantity/format, how the sender is notified, and whether a rejected item is returned or destroyed.
Choose one verified money channel and save the receipt
The county accepts money orders, cashier's checks and tax returns payable to the person in custody; it rejects cash, personal checks and payroll checks. It also links to JPay and Securus and says both require the inmate jacket number. The county does not explain whether Securus funds a communication account or the same trust/commissary ledger as JPay, so do not duplicate a deposit to solve a delay.
Verify the legal name/jacket number, choose one channel, review the live fee and keep the receipt/transaction ID. JPay support is 800-574-5729. JPay's general Indiana help says a visitor-list condition can apply to money orders, but Shelby County does not publish that condition locally; confirm before mailing. Deposit caps, posting time, commissary schedule, indigent supplies, refunds and release-balance method are not published.

Protect health, safety and access
Relay urgent facts and preserve unresolved local routes
Relay urgent health facts to the jail; do not expect a diagnosis
No reviewed public page identifies Shelby County Jail's medical contractor, family clinical-information line, sick-call system, copay, consent form or outside appointment procedure. For an immediate threat call 911; for an urgent concern involving a person already inside, call 317-392-6405 option 4 and state the legal name, jacket number if known, symptoms, timing, medication/allergy facts and callback number.
Ask staff to document and route the information to clinical personnel. Privacy rules may prevent staff from discussing diagnosis or treatment without authorization; they can still receive relevant information. Record the time, staff unit and promised next step.

Use the jail for an in-custody crisis and local providers after release
For self-harm, psychosis, withdrawal or another immediate in-custody crisis, call the jail and describe observable facts, not conclusions. JRAC records identify Major Health Partners Behavioral Health, Aspire Indiana Health and a Jail Navigator as local justice-system partners, but do not prove who holds the current jail medical contract.
After release, Aspire's Shelbyville Health Center is at 7 E. Hendricks St., 317-674-0506; current same-day-access hours are Monday–Thursday 8:15 a.m.–3 p.m. and Friday 8:15 a.m.–1 p.m. Major Hospital is at 2451 Intelliplex Drive for emergency care. Confirm availability before travel.

Ask before bringing medication, glasses or records
The county does not publish who may deliver prescription medication, the receiving door/hours, original-container rule, accepted quantity, formulary substitution, glasses/contact handling, or medical-record release process. Do not leave medication in a lobby or mail it.
Call 317-392-6405 option 4, ask staff to consult medical personnel, and record the exact instructions. The person in custody should use the internal health-request route; families can provide prescriber/pharmacy details but cannot authorize treatment without the required consent.
Have the person use the internal grievance route and preserve dates
No public Shelby County page publishes an inmate handbook, grievance form, kiosk category, response deadline, appeal level or external jail-complaint address. The person inside should ask an officer how to submit a written medical or conditions grievance and retain the submission/response dates and grievance number.
For an unresolved process question, call the Jail Commander through 317-392-6405 option 4. A family call is not necessarily an internal grievance and should not replace a deadline-sensitive written filing. Emergency safety issues go to staff immediately.

Request jail access first; use county ADA/Title VI contacts for escalation
Ask the jail in advance for wheelchair access, effective communication, ASL, reading assistance, a disability-related visit adjustment or language help. The public page does not identify a jail-specific ADA owner or response deadline.
Shelby County lists ADA Coordinator Desiree Calderella, 25 W. Polk St., Room 201, 317-392-6338, dcalderella@co.shelby.in.us, and Title VI Coordinator Donna Cook, Room 224, 317-398-5537, dcook@co.shelby.in.us. Use the county's external discrimination form when applicable, while preserving the request, date and jail response.

Report immediate sexual-safety facts without waiting for research
No reviewed Shelby County page publishes a local third-party or anonymous PREA hotline, outside victim advocate, retaliation contact or current audit. For immediate danger call 911; for a person inside, call the jail and ask for the Jail Commander or shift supervisor. Give only necessary identifying and safety facts.
Ask how a family member may make a third-party PREA report and how the person can contact an outside advocate confidentially. The federal PREA page establishes the framework but not Shelby County's local procedure; the missing local route remains an explicit gap.

Coordinate the case, bond and release
The court order and every hold control
Use MyCase and the assigned court, not jail staff, for hearing information
The jail says initial-hearing dates are set by the courts and jail officers do not have that information. Shelby Superior Court 2 says in-custody initial hearings are generally the first business day after arrest in the morning, but the exact time depends on filing, docket and jail availability. Other cases may be assigned differently.
Search MyCase by name/case number, confirm the court and call that court or the Clerk at 317-392-6320. Do not treat the Superior Court 2 pattern as a promise for every charge. The court order controls no-contact, release and future hearing terms.
Sources: Shelby County Sheriff — Jail Division · Shelby Superior Court 2 — Criminal · Indiana MyCase · Shelby County Clerk
Request appointed counsel at the initial hearing
A defendant may request a public defender orally at the initial hearing; the court prefers a written application. The court decides eligibility. After appointment, the Public Defender Agency assigns counsel and mails the next court date/contact information. The office is at 19 W. Hendricks St., 317-421-8030, Monday–Friday 8 a.m.–4 p.m., closed noon–1 p.m.
The agency says it cannot discuss the case with family without the client's express written authorization and aims to visit an incarcerated client within 72 hours after appointment. Do not use recorded family calls for defense strategy.

Follow the court order and the county’s task-specific bond channel
Monday–Friday 8 a.m.–4 p.m., excluding holidays, the county directs bond payment to the Clerk in the courthouse at 407 S. Harrison St. After hours/weekends, pay at the jail. Cash or card is available 24/7; cash must be the exact amount. For card payment call 888-604-7888 or use AllPaid with legal name, jacket number, exact bond and PLC 6051. The county posts a nonrefundable 9% AllPaid fee.
A bondsman is accepted only for a surety bond. Call 317-392-6405 option 4 for the current bond and out-of-county holds before paying. Violent or domestic-violence cases can require a hearing before bond; another hold can prevent release after payment.

Confirm property release and pickup before sending a representative
No reviewed local page publishes property-release authorization, pickup door/hours, accepted recipient ID, vehicle/key handling, abandoned-property timeline or mail-out option. The person inside may need to sign a release, but that is not publicly confirmed.
Call 317-392-6405 option 4 before travel with the legal name/jacket number and ask what form, recipient ID and appointment are required. Do not assume the Sheriff lobby's weekday hours are the property window.
Sources: Shelby County Sheriff — Jail Division · Shelby County Sheriff
Plan pickup only after the jail clears every authority
Bond payment does not guarantee immediate release. Ask about another county's warrant, probation/parole matter, court no-contact condition, IDOC commitment or federal/immigration process. The local rules allow release on recognizance after a prosecutor notifies the jail that no charges will be filed and describe special pre-bond hearing limits in violent/domestic cases.
The county does not publish a standard release notification, pickup door, clothing/transport help, medication supply, property/trust settlement or processing time. Call the jail immediately before departure and do not promise a time.

Use the jail navigator and separate community providers
Shelby County JRAC publicly identifies a Jail Navigator, but does not publish direct eligibility, referral or appointment instructions. Ask 317-392-6405 option 4 how the person can request the navigator before release. Court Services at 10 W. Polk St., 317-392-6492, controls probation/community-corrections tasks, not jail housing.
For behavioral health, recovery, disability and victim-support referrals, use the county resource page. Confirm referral acceptance, documents and timing; an external provider listing is not proof that the jail arranged enrollment.

Plan the last mile
Reserve county transit and verify the exact public door
Use 107 West Taylor, but verify the public door and parking
For jail business, navigate to 107 W. Taylor St., not the Courthouse at 407 S. Harrison or Court Services at Polk Street. The Sheriff's published lobby hours are Monday–Friday 8 a.m.–4 p.m., excluding holidays, but bond can be accepted at the jail after hours and on weekends.
No reviewed official source identifies the public jail entrance, onsite-visit check-in door, bond door, visitor lot, parking limits, accessible spaces or step-free path. Call 317-392-6405 option 4 and ask for the exact door and lawful parking before travel.

Reserve ShelbyGo; there is no published fixed jail stop
ShelbyGo is the official countywide public, non-emergency demand-response service. It operates Monday–Friday 8 a.m.–4:30 p.m. and recommends reserving at least one week ahead. The current operator page publishes $4 per boarding within Shelbyville and $7 outside a four-mile downtown radius for passengers under 60; correct change is required. Riders 60+ may donate, and a needed personal assistant rides free.
Call the operator's current page at 317-398-7614. CIRTA prints 317-398-6414, a material phone conflict; try the operator number first and document which one answers. Request 107 W. Taylor St., reserve both legs, disclose mobility needs and confirm the actual drop-off/public door. No fixed jail stop or same-day ride was verified.

Use verified nearby care and county travel resources
For emergency care, MHP Major Hospital is at 2451 Intelliplex Drive, 317-392-3211. For behavioral-health intake, Aspire Shelbyville is at 7 E. Hendricks St., 317-674-0506. Call before relying on non-emergency availability.
For food/lodging, use Visit Indiana's Shelby County listings and confirm the current address, hours, rate and vacancy with the business. No specific restaurant or hotel is presented as jail-affiliated, and no parking or overnight accommodation was inferred from proximity.

Keep neighboring systems distinct
Do not transfer adult-jail rules to supervision, youth, state or federal systems
Keep Court Services and Community Corrections out of the jail guide
Effective January 1, 2024, Shelby County Community Corrections and Probation merged into Court Services. Community Corrections is at 10 W. Polk St., 317-392-6492; Probation is at 20 W. Polk St., 317-392-6490. These offices manage supervision and alternatives, not the adult jail at 107 W. Taylor.
A home-detention or probation client is not necessarily in jail. A jailed person can also have a supervision hold. Confirm both custody and the supervising office rather than transferring jail rules to community supervision.
Sources: Shelby County Court Services · Shelby County Community Corrections status page · Shelby Superior Court 2 — Criminal
Use the locator that matches the custody system
Shelby County Youth Assistance, juvenile supervision, municipal police lockup, IDOC prisons, federal prisons and ICE detention are separate identities. This route does not establish that the adult jail operates a youth unit, state prison, federal prison or ICE detention facility.
If the county roster is empty, use the arresting agency and jail phone first, then IDOC, BOP or ICE only when the facts support that system. A federal or immigration hold can delay release without changing who operates the current county bed.

Protect no-contact orders and use verified victim-support channels
Do not relay messages that could violate a no-contact order. The local rules impose a ten-day no-contact condition after some violent-injury releases until the initial hearing, unless the court changes it. MyCase and the assigned court control the actual order.
For immediate danger call 911. Shelby County's resource page lists the National Domestic Violence Hotline 800-799-7233, Safe Passage 877-733-1990 and RAINN 800-656-4673. The Prosecutor is 317-392-6440 for local victim-assistance routing.

Finding someone held here
Use the county system for a recent arrest. A state corrections search covers people in state custody. It generally will not list someone booked into a county jail this week. Bookings, bail, release, and visiting are all handled by Shelby County Sheriff’s Office.

Before you travel, pay, or mail anything
Get two things first: which facility the person is actually in, and their booking or ID number. Almost nothing works without them. Then check this facility’s current instructions — rules and service providers change.
Clear information.
Clear boundaries.
Jail411 is an independent information resource for families and friends. We are not a government agency, jail operator, law firm or live custody-records service.
Can Jail411 tell me if someone is in custody right now?
No. Jail411 does not hold live custody records. Use the official locator for the county, state, federal or ICE system that has the person; start here if you do not know which.
Does posting bond mean the person comes home?
Not always. A probation or parole hold, another county's warrant or an immigration detainer can keep someone in custody after bond is posted. Ask the jail what holds are on the booking before you pay.
What should I confirm before visiting?
The person's current facility, the visiting schedule, approval requirements, accepted identification and arrival instructions. Check the facility page and its official sources before you travel.
What if I find something that needs correcting?
Send us the page and the detail that needs attention. Include the official source when you have one. Do not send private booking documents or other sensitive personal information.
