PART 01

Start here

Confirm the person, facility and responsible contact before acting.

Identity and active facility

The adult Sheriff jail is the Posey County Jail / Confinement Center at 1201 O’Donnell Road, Mt. Vernon, IN 47620. Call 812-838-1321 and choose option 1 for the jail; option 2 is administration. The county says the current 208-bed center was completed in 2018.

Verify custody without a county roster

The county publishes no live jail roster link. Call 812-838-1321 option 1 with the full legal name, date of birth, likely spelling and approximate arrest time; ask for the booking number and whether the person is still there. Cross-check the Indiana jail portal, SAVIN, IDOC, BOP or ICE only when transfer is plausible; a court docket or third-party profile is not proof of current custody.

Call the desk that owns the task

Use 812-838-1321 option 1 for custody and current jail rules, option 2 for Sheriff administration, and 812-838-1320 for dispatch service. Use Clerk 812-838-1306 for court records and county government 812-838-1300 for a county-office referral. Do not expect a court, vendor or Community Corrections to answer a jail-policy question.

Keep the shared campus systems separate

These instructions apply only to adult Sheriff custody at 1201 O’Donnell Road. Community Corrections uses the same physical address but publishes P.O. Box 1003 for its mail and is not the jail. Probation, courts, youth systems, municipal police, IDOC, BOP and ICE also remain separate; recheck the custodian after every transport or sentencing event.

PART 02

Visits

Verify approval, schedule, platform and exceptions before travel or payment.

Confirm the current visit mode first

The county does not publish whether current visits are onsite video, remote video, noncontact or suspended. JailATM’s support selector lists Posey County Sheriff’s Office, while nonofficial listings name InmateSales; neither establishes the county-approved visit product. Call 812-838-1321 option 1 before creating or funding an account.

Sources: Posey County Government — Sheriff’s Office · JailATM general inquiry facility list · InmateSales portal

Get a housing-specific schedule

No current official page gives visiting days, hours, duration, frequency, housing rotation, check-in cutoff or holiday closures. Ask jail option 1 for the person’s housing-based calendar and whether the slot must be booked. Save the staff answer and verify again the day of travel.

Sources: Posey County Government — Sheriff’s Office

Book only through the confirmed platform

First obtain the resident’s exact name and booking number from jail option 1. Ask which platform, visit type, lead time and support channel apply. If staff assigns JailATM, select Indiana and Posey County Sheriff’s Office inside the logged-in account and verify the resident before paying; do not assume its generic video instructions prove local availability.

Sources: Posey County Government — Sheriff’s Office · JailATM general inquiry facility list · JailATM support

Ask before bringing a child or relying on an exception

Accepted identification, alternatives for a person without photo ID, visitor approval, criminal-history limits, minor consent or custody papers, dress, belongings, infant supplies, disability accommodations and long-distance exceptions are not published. Call 812-838-1321 option 1 with the exact scenario before travel.

Sources: Posey County Government — Sheriff’s Office · ADA.gov

Document and route a failed visit

Save the confirmation, receipt, scheduled time and error. If the jail assigned JailATM, test the camera and microphone in advance and use its support form; ask jail option 1 whether housing, discipline, court or operations blocked the session. Current local cancellation, refund, outage, late-arrival and appeal rules are not published.

PART 03

Calls and mail

Keep telephone, messages and personal or legal mail rules task-specific.

Do not infer the voice provider

The county does not name a current voice provider, account type, rate table or support number. Ask 812-838-1321 option 1 which product handles voice calls and whether funding is tied to the resident or one destination number. Use the exact booking identifier the jail confirms and never put trust money into a communications account by guess.

Sources: Posey County Government — Sheriff’s Office · JailATM general inquiry facility list · InmateSales portal

Troubleshoot the number before adding funds

Confirm that the number accepts calls from a correctional system and has no spam block, call forwarding or carrier restriction. Record the date, time, resident and error, then contact the jail-confirmed provider. Local calling hours, call length, recording notice, blocked-number removal, refund and transfer/release balance rules remain open.

Sources: Posey County Government — Sheriff’s Office · JailATM support

Call before addressing personal mail

Do not assume personal mail goes to 1201 O’Donnell Road. A 2020 report described an in-jail scanner, but the county publishes no current personal-mail address, addressee format or scanning route. Ask jail option 1 for every address line, booking identifier, envelope rule, delivery format and rejection process before mailing.

Sources: Posey County Government — Sheriff’s Office · WFIE — Posey jail mail scanner, 2020

Verify photos and publisher rules separately

The county publishes no current limits for photo size, count, ink, instant photos, greeting cards, books, magazines, newspapers, subscriptions or religious materials. Ask whether books must arrive directly from a publisher and whether digital images use a different provider. A generic vendor menu does not establish Posey availability.

Sources: Posey County Government — Sheriff’s Office · JailATM support

Treat packages as prohibited until confirmed

No authorized package, clothing drop, medication delivery, glasses or emergency-item exception is published. Call jail option 1 before buying or shipping anything. If staff identifies an approved catalog, confirm item, size, resident eligibility, deadline and what happens after transfer or release.

PART 04

Money, commissary and bond

Confirm the correct trust, commissary and bond channel before paying.

Confirm the trust channel before paying

JailATM lists Posey County Sheriff’s Office in a support selector, but the county does not say that it handles trust deposits or commissary. Call 812-838-1321 option 1 for the current vendor, lobby method, accepted payment, resident identifier, limit, fee and posting time. Do not mail cash or a money order without written local instructions.

Sources: Posey County Government — Sheriff’s Office · JailATM general inquiry facility list · JailATM support

Protect the receipt and correct the resident first

Before paying, match the resident name and ID. Keep the receipt and transaction number. For a duplicate, wrong resident, missing posting or release/transfer, contact jail option 1 immediately and then only the provider it confirms. JailATM’s generic support says duplicate deposits should be placed on hold quickly, but local refund authority is unverified.

Sources: JailATM support · Posey County Government — Sheriff’s Office

Separate trust funds from commissary ordering

A deposit path is not proof of an outside package or commissary-pack program. Ask jail option 1 about order day, balance cutoff, spending limit, products, medical/dietary substitutions, shortages, indigent hygiene and release balance. If a vendor catalog appears, confirm Posey participation inside the account before purchase.

Sources: Posey County Government — Sheriff’s Office · JailATM support

Read the signed order before paying bond

Search MyCase for the case and signed bond order, then confirm the amount, bond type, case number, outside holds and accepted local method with jail option 1 or Clerk 812-838-1306. Indiana law provides the framework, but the order controls. The county publishes no online jail-bond vendor or after-hours process.

Sources: Indiana MyCase · Posey County Clerk’s Office · Indiana Rules of Criminal Procedure · Indiana Code Article 35-33-8 · Posey County Government — Sheriff’s Office

Do not equate payment with immediate release

After payment, keep the receipt and ask who must transmit it, whether every case and hold is cleared, and when the jail received authority to release. For a declined card, wrong case or duplicate, stop and contact the named processor, Clerk 812-838-1306 and jail option 1; do not submit repeated payments by guess.

PART 05

Health, grievances and safety

Route urgent care, accommodations, grievances and safety concerns to the responsible channel.

Route urgent health facts through custody staff

A 2020 Quality Correctional Care contract is too old to identify the current clinical provider. For an urgent but non-911 concern, call 812-838-1321 option 1, state the resident name, booking number, condition, medication and last dose, and ask that information reach medical staff. Staff may accept information without disclosing protected health information.

Sources: Posey Commissioners minutes — QCC contract renewal, 2020 · Posey County Government — Sheriff’s Office

Prepare a medication verification list

Bring or transmit only as staff directs: prescriber, pharmacy, medicine name, dose, schedule, last dose, allergies and device needs. Do not leave pills at the lobby without permission. A 2022 copay action is dated; current medication acceptance, dental, glasses, devices, copays, indigency and discharge supply are unresolved.

Sources: Posey Commissioners minutes — jail medical copays, 2022 · Posey Commissioners minutes — QCC contract renewal, 2020 · Posey County Government — Sheriff’s Office

Ask for the current written grievance process

The county posts no resident grievance procedure. Ask how the resident requests a form, informal resolution, emergency review, response deadline and appeal, and how to report retaliation. Keep dates, names, copies and grievance numbers; a family phone call does not necessarily preserve the resident’s internal deadline.

Sources: Posey County Government — Sheriff’s Office

Request an accommodation early

Call jail option 1 for custody accommodations and county government 812-838-1300 if an ADA referral is needed. Describe the functional barrier, requested communication or access aid, timing and visit/court deadline. No jail-specific coordinator, form, interpreter/TTY route, response time or appeal is published.

Sources: ADA.gov · Posey County Government — Sheriff’s Office · Posey County Government — Contact

Treat immediate sexual-safety concerns as urgent

For immediate danger call 911; for a resident in custody call jail option 1 and clearly request separation and medical/safety review. The county posts no local anonymous or third-party PREA channel, outside advocate, investigation-status route or retaliation report. Record who received the report and when.

Sources: U.S. DOJ PREA Resource Center · Posey County Government — Sheriff’s Office

Use the correct emergency path

Call 911 for a community emergency. For an immediate in-custody threat, call 812-838-1321 option 1 and give the resident identity, location if known, concrete behavior or symptom and time. For community crisis and resource support after release, use 988 or Indiana 211; neither replaces jail notification.

PART 07

Travel and local help

Plan the verified trip and local support without assuming a jail stop or final path.

Confirm parking and the correct door

The jail address is 1201 O’Donnell Road, but no official page identifies visitor parking, accessible spaces, overflow, lobby door, property entrance or after-hours waiting. Call 812-838-1321 option 1 before travel, especially for mobility access, a child, property pickup or late release.

Sources: Posey County Government — Sheriff’s Office · ADA.gov

No verified public jail trip

INDOT’s current public-transit-system list names no Posey County grantee. A state coordination plan places Posey in rural Region 1, but that is planning geography, not a ride offer. No fixed stop, general-public demand response, fare or final walk to 1201 O’Donnell Road was verified; use Indiana 211 for leads and confirm eligibility and coverage directly.

Sources: INDOT — Indiana public transit systems · INDOT State Human Services Coordination Plan · Indiana 211

Why no seven service dates are shown

No current official operator or service calendar for a Posey County jail trip was found, so zero service dates are claimed. Do not convert a neighboring system, senior-only ride, medical ride or coordination-region listing into jail transportation. Release pickup must be arranged independently and synchronized with jail option 1.

One local lodging lead, not a placement

Four Seasons Motel identifies itself as a Mount Vernon, Indiana lodging business. Confirm its current address, rate, vacancy, check-in ID, accessibility and transportation directly before relying on it. It is a commercial lead, not a jail-arranged room, shelter or release plan.

Sources: Four Seasons Motel — Mount Vernon, Indiana

Use verified community referral points

United Way of Posey County lists a food pantry and emergency-assistance network, including township-trustee coordination. Call the current program before travel for hours, eligibility, documents and inventory; use the county trustee directory for the correct township and Indiana 211 for a broader search. A listing does not guarantee same-day food or funds.

Sources: United Way of Posey County — Impact · Posey County township trustees and boards · Indiana 211

Keep community services outside custody decisions

Posey County Health Department is listed at 812-838-1328, EMS Community Paramedic at 812-781-0330, Veterans Services at 812-838-8372 and Community Corrections at 812-838-3913. They may assist after release within their scope; none controls jail medical care, custody, bond or release. Indiana 211 can identify additional current services.

Sources: Posey County officials and department heads · Posey County EMS and Community Paramedic · Posey County Veterans Services · Posey County Community Corrections · Indiana 211

Plan for nights, weekends and changing status

For immediate danger call 911. For current custody, safety, medication facts, unexpected transfer or release pickup, call 812-838-1321 option 1. For a deputy response use 812-838-1320. For community resources dial 211. Verify each plan shortly before acting because no official after-hours release, visit, property or transport schedule is published.

Finding someone held here

Use the county system for a recent arrest. A state corrections search covers people in state custody. It generally will not list someone booked into a county jail this week. Bookings, bail, release, and visiting are all handled by Posey County Sheriff’s Office.
Call this facility directly: (812) 838-1321

Before you travel, pay, or mail anything

Get two things first: which facility the person is actually in, and their booking or ID number. Almost nothing works without them. Then check this facility’s current instructions — rules and service providers change.

Clear information.
Clear boundaries.

Jail411 is an independent information resource for families and friends. We are not a government agency, jail operator, law firm or live custody-records service.

Can Jail411 tell me if someone is in custody right now?

No. Jail411 does not hold live custody records. Use the official locator for the county, state, federal or ICE system that has the person; start here if you do not know which.

Does posting bond mean the person comes home?

Not always. A probation or parole hold, another county's warrant or an immigration detainer can keep someone in custody after bond is posted. Ask the jail what holds are on the booking before you pay.

What should I confirm before visiting?

The person's current facility, the visiting schedule, approval requirements, accepted identification and arrival instructions. Check the facility page and its official sources before you travel.

What if I find something that needs correcting?

Send us the page and the detail that needs attention. Include the official source when you have one. Do not send private booking documents or other sensitive personal information.
