JAIL411 / FAMILY FIELD GUIDE
A practical family guide to Porter County’s adult jail.
Sources reviewed
Adult Sheriff jail at 2755 State Road 49, Valparaiso. Youth, historic, municipal, Community Corrections/Jail Treatment, court, supervision, state, federal, ICE and neighboring systems remain separate.
- Confirm custody
Use the official roster and call 219-477-3050.
- Confirm the transaction
Keep GettingOut funding separate from trust, commissary and bond.
- Confirm the trip
Reserve both the visit and any V-Line deviation.
Custody and identity
Confirm the person, operator and responsible office
Use the active adult Sheriff jail
Use Porter County Jail, 2755 State Road 49, Valparaiso, IN 46383. Call the Jail Division at 219-477-3050; Sheriff administration is 219-477-3000. The posted “Jail Hours of Operation 7am to 3pm” are not explained as custody hours, so treat them as an unconfirmed public-service window and call before an in-person task.
Keep every adjacent identity separate
This guide covers the adult Sheriff jail only. Do not use it for Juvenile Detention at 1660 S. State Road 2, the historic jail/museum at 153 Franklin Street, Community Corrections/Jail Treatment, municipal police, courts, probation, IDOC, BOP, ICE or another county. A hold from another authority applies only after the jail confirms it.
Confirm custody and the exact record
Search the official Who’s in Jail roster and recent bookings with full legal name, spelling variants, date of birth and arrest date. Save the booking identifier, charge and arresting agency shown. If no result appears, call 219-477-3050 and ask about intake delay, release, transfer, alias or another authority. VINE alerts and MyCase help, but neither proves the present bed.

Call the office that owns the task
Visits and family contact
Set up visits, calls, messages, mail and money without crossing accounts
Schedule remote video from the resident’s housing information
Remote video is posted seven days a week: 9:00–11:30 a.m., 12:30–4:30 p.m. and 6:30–10:00 p.m. Times vary by classification and housing unit, and the resident must provide the usable block. Schedule through GettingOut or the facility lobby kiosk, preferably at least one day ahead. Lockdown can cancel access.
Sources: visits
Verify identity, minors and exceptions before booking
GettingOut requires account identity verification, either through the first deposit or verification questions. The Sheriff does not publish local visit duration, frequency, fee, minor/guardian rules, dress, belongings, participant limits, alternate ID, special visits or onsite-lobby status. Call the Jail Division before adding a child or traveler.
Sources: visits
Test the remote-video device early
Use a computer with high-speed internet, camera, microphone and speakers and run the linked system test before the appointment. The page’s references to Safari 4, Firefox 7 and Adobe Flash 10 are obsolete; do not install Flash. Use the current GettingOut test and call 866-516-0115, option 2, for live requirements.
Sources: visits
Document cancellation and failure evidence
Cancel through the account or confirmation link. The local page says cancellations more than 24 hours ahead receive a full refund, while internet-connectivity failures are not creditable; confirm current terms in the checkout. Save screenshots, transaction ID, time and support case. Ask support and the jail whether lockdown caused the failure.
Sources: visits
Fund the correct phone account
Only residents initiate calls. The announcement identifies the caller and says calls may be monitored/recorded. A first unfunded call may be a brief free call, often under one minute. Choose either the resident account, usable for calls to any number, or Friends & Family, restricted to your number. Voicemail up to three minutes uses 866-516-0115, option 4; blocking uses option 5.
Sources: visits
Keep messages, photos and tablets conditional
The Sheriff page supports secure messages, photos and video in the GettingOut account, subject to facility approval. A separate tablet page does not publish functions or universal housing availability. Confirm the product shown for this resident before paying; rejected-media review and refund rules are unpublished.
Confirm personal-mail instructions before sending
No reviewed official local source publishes a current personal-mail address, envelope format, page/photo limits, scanning vendor, rejection notice, appeal or original-item disposition. Call 219-477-3050, repeat the address back, and ask whether the booking number and return address are required. Do not use a provider or third-party address from another jail.
Sources: directory · jailstandards
Separate privileged legal mail from family mail
The jail’s current legal-mail address, labeling, opening procedure, legal-copy process and confidential attorney-call route are unpublished. Counsel should confirm the privileged-mail procedure with the Jail Division before sending. Family should never label ordinary mail “legal.” Indiana jail standards are a baseline, not the local address.
Sources: directory · jailstandards
Do not mail books, packages or clothing without approval
Publisher-only rules, book quantity/content, photo size/count, packages, clothing exchange and rejection/refund handling were not found on an official local page. Call first and record the staff answer, date and resident identifier. A vendor’s ability to take payment does not prove the jail accepts the item.
Sources: directory · jailstandards
Separate communication funding from trust and commissary
The GettingOut page documents deposits connected with calls, not the jail’s full trust/commissary system. Current commissary vendor, kiosk/web/phone methods, fees, caps, deductions, reversals, indigent supplies and release-balance handling are unpublished. Ask the Jail Division which account the resident needs before paying.
Health, rights and safety
Route health facts, accommodations, grievances and abuse reports
Route health information without expecting a diagnosis
The Sheriff names Quality Correctional Care but publishes no family clinical line or scope on the local page. Call the Jail Division for urgent health collateral and ask how to mark it for medical staff; use 911 for an immediate offsite emergency. Staff cannot promise disclosure without authorization, but families can provide medication, allergy and recent-care facts.
Use the jail route and community crisis resources appropriately
NorthShore is specifically described as providing in-jail chemical-dependency/addiction treatment, Masters-level clinicians, MAT, psychiatry and continuity after release; that does not establish all general medical care. For community crisis help call Porter-Starke at 219-476-4523 or 988. Ask the jail how to submit time-sensitive mental-health collateral.

Confirm medication, device and records procedures
No official local page states how family delivers prescription verification, glasses, hearing devices, CPAP supplies or outside records, or how a resident authorizes records release. Call 219-477-3050 before bringing anything; do not leave medicine at an unconfirmed desk.
Distinguish resident grievances from employee complaints
The public Employee Complaint Form may route an outside complaint about staff conduct, but it is not published as the resident grievance system. Ask the Jail Division for the internal form, emergency route, filing deadline, appeal and anti-retaliation contact. Keep copies, dates, names and response numbers.

Request accommodation and preserve the coordinator conflict
The county ADA page says request modifications as soon as possible and no later than five business days before an event. It names Matthew Stechly in narrative text but Ray Cloyd in the coordinator block, both at 219-465-3329; an older plan names Nancy Adams and 72 hours. Call 219-465-3329 for the current coordinator and also notify the jail for custody-specific needs.
Do not use the juvenile PREA page as the adult-jail procedure
The county’s public PREA notice expressly covers Juvenile Detention, not this adult jail. Federal PREA rules do not supply Porter County’s local adult reporting channel. For immediate danger call 911; otherwise call 219-477-3050 and ask for the adult PREA coordinator, third-party/anonymous route, outside recipient and retaliation protection.
Court and counsel
Use the current case, lawyer and signed order
Use MyCase, then confirm with the assigned court
Search MyCase by name and case number, but verify hearings, division and orders with the Clerk at 219-465-3450. Porter County courts use more than one location. Do not assume a jail booking number is the court case number or that an online entry is complete.

Protect attorney communication
The official forms page provides the public-defender appointment form; appointment comes through the court after the required financial information. Ask the assigned court or Clerk how to submit it and identify appointed counsel. Do not discuss defense strategy on a recorded family call. The Prosecutor represents the state, not the resident.
Sources: forms · clerk · prosecutor · legalhelp
Read the live order before paying bond
Use MyCase and the signed order, then call both the Jail Division and Clerk to confirm amount, acceptable tender, payer ID, after-hours handling, refund owner and release timing. A 2017 local-rules document contains older cash/surety language and is not a safe substitute for the current order. Ask about other holds before paying.
Sources: localrules · mycase · clerk · directory
Property, release and reentry
Plan documents, belongings and post-release continuity
Do not confuse police records with resident property
The Records Division handles reports, checks, impounded vehicles and public records; it is not confirmed as the resident-property pickup desk. Ask the Jail Division for authorization, pickup person ID, entrance, hours, storage deadline and clothing exchange. Bring nothing until the desk confirms it.
Plan for an unannounced or delayed release
VINE may provide notification, but release time, exit door, medication/property/account-balance handoff and transport procedure are unpublished. Call with the booking identifier, ask about court, immigration or other-agency holds, and arrange a sober adult or ride with a flexible window. Do not wait at an unconfirmed door.
Use programs only when the person is enrolled or eligible
NorthShore describes continuity into IOP, MAT, psychiatry, behavioral health and primary care after release. Porter County Jail Treatment/Community Corrections is a separate program with director contact 219-477-3125; do not assume enrollment or housing. Ask for a discharge plan, medication continuity and identification needs before release.

Send public-record requests to the records owner
Use the Sheriff Records Division for agency reports, local record checks, impounded vehicles and public records, and the Clerk for court files. Neither route replaces medical-record authorization or resident-property pickup. Record the incident or case number before calling.
Sources: records · recordsaccess · clerk
Arrival and local support
Confirm the door, transportation and local backup
Confirm the public entrance and parking before travel
An older county ADA plan describes a jail built in 2004 with more than 250 cells and limited public areas including lobby, seating and restrooms, but no reviewed source identifies the current visit/release entrance, named lot, fees, drop-off or accessible path. Call 219-477-3050 and ask for the task-specific door and parking instruction.
Treat V-Line deviation as conditional, not a jail stop
V-Line publishes fixed routes, but none names the jail. An approved route deviation may go up to three-quarters of a mile from a posted stop, first-come and only when schedule time permits. Apply in advance; the policy says up to one week and at least 24 hours ahead, with two-hour cancellation. Call 219-476-9393 to measure and approve 2755 State Road 49; never assume door service.

Seven dated planning checks, not reservations
The published brochure shows daily fixed-route service, so the next seven calendar dates checked are September 30; October 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6, 2026. These dates prove only the operator’s published route calendar, not a deviation slot or jail stop. Reserve the deviation and visit separately and reconfirm both.
Sources: brochure · deviations · devpolicy
Confirm fare and payment before boarding
V-Line publishes a $1 one-way fare, 50¢ categories for ages 5–18 with ID, age 65+ and reduced-fare cardholders, and free travel under age four with a paying adult; exact cash is required onboard and Token Transit is offered. Recheck current fare and deviation eligibility before the trip.
Use local services as leads, not guarantees
The city’s community pages and resource guide list food, shelter, health and recovery leads. For crisis use 219-476-4523 or 988. Official tourism listings identify Hampton Inn & Suites, 1451 S. Silhavy Road, 219-531-6424, and Pesto’s, 3123 Calumet Avenue, 219-462-0993. Confirm eligibility, hours, price and availability directly.
Use a same-day verification checklist
- Confirm custody and booking identifier.
- Confirm the exact transaction, price and refund terms.
- Confirm housing-based visit time and current ID/minor rules.
- Confirm the public entrance, parking or approved V-Line deviation.
- Save names, confirmation numbers and screenshots.

Finding someone held here
Use the county system for a recent arrest. A state corrections search covers people in state custody. It generally will not list someone booked into a county jail this week. Bookings, bail, release, and visiting are all handled by Porter County Sheriff’s Office.

Clear information.
Clear boundaries.
Jail411 is an independent information resource for families and friends. We are not a government agency, jail operator, law firm or live custody-records service.
Can Jail411 tell me if someone is in custody right now?
No. Jail411 does not hold live custody records. Use the official locator for the county, state, federal or ICE system that has the person; start here if you do not know which.
Does posting bond mean the person comes home?
Not always. A probation or parole hold, another county's warrant or an immigration detainer can keep someone in custody after bond is posted. Ask the jail what holds are on the booking before you pay.
What should I confirm before visiting?
The person's current facility, the visiting schedule, approval requirements, accepted identification and arrival instructions. Check the facility page and its official sources before you travel.
What if I find something that needs correcting?
Send us the page and the detail that needs attention. Include the official source when you have one. Do not send private booking documents or other sensitive personal information.
