PART 01

Confirm the adult Sheriff system

Separate custody, records and every outside system.

Use the active adult Sheriff jail at 304 East Seymour Street

Newton County Jail is the Sheriff-operated adult county jail at 304 E. Seymour St., Kentland, IN 47951. Call the jail at 219-474-3999. The Sheriff administrative office at the same street address uses 219-474-3331; nonemergency dispatch is 219-474-5661. Use the number that matches the task.

This route does not cover municipal police, juvenile custody, probation, courts, Indiana DOC prisons, federal or ICE custody, historical jails, or any unverified work-release/community-corrections program. The county page reviewed does not establish a separate contract jail or ICE detention role.

Confirm custody before sending money, mail or making a trip

The reviewed county pages do not publish a live Newton County jail roster or booking-number search. Call 219-474-3999 with the person's full legal name, date of birth if known, and arrest date. Ask for the exact name spelling, current custody status and identifier required by HomeWAV or any payment.

If the person is not there, check Indiana DOC, BOP and ICE locators separately and use MyCase for the court case. VINE can support notifications, but it is not a substitute for confirmation by the holding agency.

Match each question to the responsible office

For housing, visits, deposits, property, medical relays or release questions, start with the jail at 219-474-3999. For Sheriff administration and records use 219-474-3331. For an immediate emergency call 911; nonemergency dispatch is 219-474-5661.

The county offices generally publish Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–4 p.m. hours. The jail page does not publish a family-service desk schedule, so call before travel.

PART 02

Prepare HomeWAV contact

Register early and verify local exceptions.

Register with HomeWAV at least 24 hours before visiting

The county says visits are by HomeWAV phone or online. Registration must be completed at least 24 hours in advance, visits are limited to 30 minutes, and visitors must present identification. Published onsite windows are Monday–Friday, 8:30–11 a.m. and noon–3:30 p.m.; onsite visiting is limited to one visit per week.

The page does not clearly say whether every remote visit must occur in those onsite windows or whether “by phone” means HomeWAV voice, a kiosk handset, or another mode. Use live HomeWAV availability and confirm with the jail before relying on a time.

Sources: Newton County — Jail · HomeWAV — Support · HomeWAV — How It Works

Prepare ID and confirm every exception before travel

Bring current government-issued photo ID. The county publishes one minor rule: a visitor under 18 may visit only with a parent or legal guardian. It does not publish rules for minor identification, proof of guardianship, number of visitors, attorney/clergy visits, dress, late arrival, disability accommodations, language help, protective orders or special visits.

Call 219-474-3999 before travel and ask the officer to confirm the exact document and approval path. Do not treat HomeWAV account approval as jail approval.

Sources: Newton County — Jail · HomeWAV — Support

Use HomeWAV for the account and the jail for local approval

Create the HomeWAV visitor account online or in the app, complete identity verification, and allow at least the county-required 24 hours. HomeWAV lists visitor support at 844-394-6639 and support@homewav.com. For a login, payment, camera or connection failure, save the error and contact HomeWAV; for denial, schedule, housing availability or discipline, call the jail.

Do not promise remote availability, price, refund, recording status or a particular device. Confirm the live checkout before adding funds.

PART 03

Keep communication, mail and money separate

Use only the verified channel and current identifier.

Confirm whether HomeWAV is also the current voice-call service

The county describes visitation “by phone or online” through HomeWAV, but the reviewed local page does not separately publish the outbound inmate telephone provider, call rate, free-call allotment, blocked-number process, attorney-call setup or voicemail rules. Treat HomeWAV as verified for visits only unless the jail confirms the voice product.

People in custody normally initiate approved calls; do not call 911 for account support. Ask the jail which company owns the voice account today, then use that provider's official support channel.

Do not assume messaging or tablets are available

No reviewed Newton County source publishes text messaging, email, photo messaging, tablet rental, electronic documents or electronic legal mail. HomeWAV offers products generally, but that does not prove each product is enabled at this jail.

Ask 219-474-3999 which functions are active for the person's housing unit, what identifier is required, and which failure belongs to the jail rather than HomeWAV.

Sources: Newton County — Jail · HomeWAV — Support · HomeWAV — How It Works

Confirm the current personal-mail route before addressing anything

The reviewed official pages do not publish a personal-mail address, digital-mail processor, envelope format, sender-address rule or return/disposition policy. Do not assume that the street address is accepted for personal mail and do not copy a third-party mail address.

Call the jail and ask separately for personal letters: recipient name format, booking ID, physical or scanning address, return address, allowed paper/envelopes, and how rejected mail is handled.

Sources: Newton County — Jail · Newton County — Sheriff

Ask before ordering books, photos or packages

The official jail page does not publish rules for books, magazines, newspapers, photographs, greeting cards, packages, publisher-only shipments, Amazon fulfillment or prohibited content. Do not order until the jail confirms the present rule and delivery address.

Ask whether photos are allowed, their size/count limits, whether Polaroids are barred, and whether rejected items are returned or destroyed.

Sources: Newton County — Jail

Use a money order only at the published lobby handoff

The county says commissary money may be dropped off only with the lobby receptionist on duty or during visitation and specifies MONEY ORDER. It does not publish the payee line, memo/ID format, limit, posting time, refund rule, online deposit vendor or fee.

Call before buying the money order. Confirm the recipient name and ID, payee, amount limit, handoff hours and receipt. Do not send cash or assume HomeWAV funds transfer to commissary.

Sources: Newton County — Jail · HomeWAV — How It Works

Use the narrow sealed-clothing allowance

After incarceration, the jail page allows three pairs of socks, three pairs of underwear, three T-shirts and one pair of Velcro tennis shoes. All items must be solid white, new and in the original sealed package.

Confirm size, drop-off hours, labeling, who may deliver and whether the allowance still applies to the person's classification before purchasing. No other property allowance is published.

PART 04

Protect health, safety and access

Relay urgent facts and identify unpublished procedures.

Relay urgent clinical facts directly to the jail

The reviewed public pages do not identify the jail medical contractor, clinic line, sick-call process, copay, emergency-notification rule, hospital partner or family medical-message form. For an urgent health concern, call 219-474-3999 and state the person's name, date of birth, housing/ID if known, symptoms, diagnosis, medication and callback number.

Call 911 for an active community emergency. The county Health Department is a separate public-health agency and is not identified as the jail's clinical provider.

Sources: Newton County — Jail · Newton County Health Department

Use a concise safety relay for mental-health risk

No local source reviewed publishes the jail's mental-health vendor, crisis-screening path, suicide-watch notification procedure or continuity-of-care contact. Call the jail immediately for threats of self-harm, withdrawal, psychosis or a sudden change and ask that the information be relayed to custody and clinical staff.

Indiana 988 supports community crisis care but does not control jail housing or replace an emergency relay to the jail.

Sources: Newton County — Jail · Indiana 988

Do not deliver medication until the jail approves the method

The official jail page does not publish medication drop-off, pharmacy transfer, verification, glasses/CPAP handling, medical authorization or record-request procedures. Ask the jail which clinician or records custodian handles the request and what signed authorization is required.

Never leave medication in a lobby or mail it without direct instructions. Keep the pharmacy label and prescriber contact ready.

Sources: Newton County — Jail · Newton County Health Department

Ask for the current internal grievance and appeal path

No reviewed public source publishes the inmate request form, grievance deadline, appeal level, medical grievance route, retaliation report or family complaint intake. The person in custody should ask staff for the current written process and keep dates, names and copies where permitted.

A family member can call the jail for the responsible supervisor, but cannot replace the person's required internal filing. For an emergency, describe the risk rather than waiting on routine review.

Sources: Newton County — Jail · Newton County — Sheriff

Request disability or language access from the correct owner

The jail page does not publish an ADA coordinator, effective-communication process, mobility accommodation, ASL interpreter, accessible visiting equipment or non-English assistance. Call the jail before a visit and request the specific adjustment, date and communication method; ask for the responsible county ADA contact if unresolved.

The court has a separate language-access plan. Court interpreters do not automatically cover jail visits. Indiana Relay may assist telephone communication, but it does not approve an accommodation.

Sources: Newton County — Jail · Newton County Court Language Access Plan · U.S. Department of Justice — ADA · Indiana Relay

Report sexual abuse or retaliation without waiting

The reviewed Newton County pages do not publish a local PREA hotline, third-party reporting address, coordinator or investigation status line. For immediate danger call the jail or 911 and say the report concerns sexual abuse, harassment, retaliation or an urgent safety need.

Ask the jail how a third party can make a confidential PREA report and how the person can report privately inside. The federal PREA Resource Center provides context, not local investigation intake.

PART 06

Plan the last mile

Reserve county transit and confirm the public door.

Confirm the public door and accessible path before driving

The active jail address is 304 E. Seymour St., Kentland, IN 47951. The reviewed official sources do not publish the public entrance, after-hours bond door, visitor check-in, parking lot, accessible space, curb cut, security screening or rideshare drop-off.

Call 219-474-3999 before departure. Do not assume that a map pin or courthouse entrance is the jail entrance.

Reserve Newton County Public Transit; no fixed jail stop is published

INDOT lists Newton County Public Transit, operated by Newton County Community Services. The operator describes advance-reservation, shared, curb-to-curb service originating in Newton County, generally Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–4 p.m. Call 219-285-2246 ext. 2 as early as possible and reserve both legs.

Ask for 304 E. Seymour St., confirm the exact safe public drop-off, pickup window, current fare, companion/personal-care-attendant rule and accessible vehicle. No fixed jail stop or live arrival was found. The county's 2025 resource guide prints 219-285-2247 ext. 2, while the current operator site uses 219-285-2246 ext. 2; use the operator number and flag the conflict.

Sources: Newton County Community Services — Transportation · Newton County Community Services · INDOT — Indiana Public Transit Systems · Newton County Resource Guide, Summer 2025

Treat seven weekdays as planning dates, not reservations

The operator's Monday–Friday pattern covers September 30 and October 1, 2, 5, 6, 7 and 8, 2026. These are calendar checks only: no ride, pickup window, fare, vehicle or return has been booked. Call ext. 2 and confirm each date.

Out-of-county trips depend on availability and the operator's published limits; no out-of-state trip is promised.

Use current local contacts, not an assumed jail program

Newton County Community Services, 102 E. State St., Morocco, 219-285-2246, publishes transportation and community assistance. The county Health Department is at 4117 S. 240 W., Morocco, 888-663-9866 ext. 2200. Indiana Legal Services is listed in the county resource guide at 800-382-7581.

The Summer 2025 county guide also lists food, clinic and lodging contacts. Confirm hours, eligibility, price and vacancy directly; none is represented as jail-approved or within walking distance.

PART 07

Keep other systems distinct

Do not attach adult-jail rules to supervision or outside custody.

Do not move adult-jail rules onto separate systems

Newton County Probation at the courthouse is supervision, not housing. The Clerk, courts and Prosecutor are legal offices, not the jail. Kentland and other town police are arresting agencies, not county housing. Juvenile custody is separate and no youth detention rule belongs here.

Indiana DOC, BOP and ICE each have separate locators and rules. The county jail page's ICE victim-notification link does not establish an ICE detention contract. No current official source reviewed verified a Newton County work-release/community-corrections facility, so none is presented.

Use emergency and notification channels for safety

Call 911 for immediate danger and nonemergency dispatch at 219-474-5661 for nonemergency law-enforcement needs. VINE can support custody-status notifications. Do not rely on a scheduled visit or routine message to report a threat.

Ask the responsible court or prosecutor about protective-order and case-safety questions. Avoid posting addresses, travel plans, account credentials or sensitive medical facts in public provider messages.

Before you travel, pay, or mail anything

Get two things first: which facility the person is actually in, and their booking or ID number. Almost nothing works without them. Then check this facility’s current instructions — rules and service providers change.

Clear information.
Clear boundaries.

Jail411 is an independent information resource for families and friends. We are not a government agency, jail operator, law firm or live custody-records service.

Can Jail411 tell me if someone is in custody right now?

No. Jail411 does not hold live custody records. Use the official locator for the county, state, federal or ICE system that has the person; start here if you do not know which.

Does posting bond mean the person comes home?

Not always. A probation or parole hold, another county's warrant or an immigration detainer can keep someone in custody after bond is posted. Ask the jail what holds are on the booking before you pay.

What should I confirm before visiting?

The person's current facility, the visiting schedule, approval requirements, accepted identification and arrival instructions. Check the facility page and its official sources before you travel.

What if I find something that needs correcting?

Send us the page and the detail that needs attention. Include the official source when you have one. Do not send private booking documents or other sensitive personal information.
