Active adult La Porte County Sheriff jail at 809 State Street, Suite 201A only; excluded and bounded systems are explicit.

  1. Confirm custody

Use official JailTracker, then 219-362-6548 option 1 if spelling, booking lag, release or transfer is possible.

  2. Confirm the task

Use Securus only for verified communications, Tigg’s/Express Account for verified money tasks, and call before mailing or travel.

  3. Preserve evidence

Save confirmations, receipts, rejection messages, case/hold facts and names; escalate urgent safety or medication facts directly.

PART 01

Identity and custody

Confirm the active adult jail, custody status, correct contact and excluded systems before acting.

Confirm the adult Sheriff jail

Use this identity: La Porte County Jail, 809 State Street, Suite 201A, La Porte, IN 46350. The official jail page says the facility operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week; in-person office hours are Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. The La Porte line is 219-326-7700 and the Michigan City line is published as 219-879-9132. The jail booking fax is 219-326-6439 and the jail medical fax is 219-362-3405.

The Sheriff administration suite is 202A, not the jail’s 201A. Historic jail buildings, the courthouse, juvenile services, Community Corrections/Work Release, municipal police, Westville Correctional Facility and Indiana State Prison are separate identities.

Find a person and repair a no-result

Start with the Sheriff-linked JailTracker. Search the legal name, then try another name, hyphen/spacing variant or narrower spelling. A no-result can mean spelling, booking lag, release, transfer, juvenile custody, another county, IDOC, federal or immigration custody.

For live help use the 24/7 automated information system at 219-362-6548, option 1. It covers charges, bonds, court dates, release dates, court locations, directions, visitation, commissary, mail, property, prescription medication drop-off, phone funding/voicemail and VINE. MyCase shows court records, not real-time housing. If custody still cannot be confirmed, use the Indiana county-jail portal, IDOC, BOP or ICE locator appropriate to the legal system.

Call the correct desk

Use 219-362-6548, option 1 for the automated jail-information menu and 219-326-7700 for the La Porte Sheriff/jail switchboard. The official site also publishes 219-879-9132 on the jail contact page but 219-878-9132 in another official jail-information presentation; verify the Michigan City number before relying on it.

For medication questions use Jail Medical at 219-326-7700, extension 2537. For notary appointments use extension 2324. Do not fax confidential health information without confirming the recipient and minimum necessary information.

Keep other custody and supervision systems separate

Do not apply this guide to the Juvenile Services Center, Community Corrections/Work Release, Adult Probation, courts, La Porte or Michigan City police, Westville Correctional Facility, Indiana State Prison, other IDOC sites, BOP, ICE, another county or historic/closed jail. Confirm the operator before using any rule.

Community Corrections records conflict between 0368 S Zigler Road and 3685 Zigler Road; resolve directly with that program. It does not change the adult Sheriff jail identity at 809 State Street, Suite 201A.

Holds, transfers and bounded programs

A person can be in the county jail with a probation, parole, IDOC, federal or immigration hold without becoming subject to another facility’s daily rules. Ask what agency controls each release condition and whether transfer is scheduled.

The jail’s voluntary Community Work Program and class/counseling offerings are jail programs, not Community Corrections placement. Program descriptions do not prove current eligibility, waitlist, credit, release effect or continuation after transfer.

PART 02

Visits and communications

Schedule visits and use each verified Securus communication product without extending its local scope.

Schedule a standard visit

The Sheriff verifies onsite and at-home video through Securus. One onsite visit per week is free; visits are 20 minutes and must be scheduled at least 24 hours ahead. Schedule through Securus or one of 8 onsite kiosks. Have the person’s legal name or jail ID plus the visitor’s home address, phone and email.

The current-linked hours image uses Central Time and shows friends/family/attorney windows Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday at 8:00–11:00 a.m., 12:00–1:00 p.m. and 3:00–4:00 p.m.; no standard visits Thursday, Saturday or Sunday. Because the image asset is timestamped 2021 and has no visible revision date, verify the current housing-specific window before travel or payment.

Sources: La Porte County Sheriff — Video Visitation · La Porte County Sheriff — Current-linked visitation hours image · Securus — Video Connect

ID, minors and special visits

The official page requires scheduling details but does not publish accepted ID, minor/guardian proof, visitor-list rules, check-in cutoff, belongings, infant supplies or denied-entry review. Call before bringing a minor or alternate ID.

Dress cannot be tight or provocative. A special/emergency visit is limited to strict circumstances such as imminent threat of death or death in the family, and approval can require waiting for the county crisis responder. Do not promise approval. Ask about disability/language accommodations while scheduling.

Sources: La Porte County Sheriff — Video Visitation · ADA.gov

Set up video and fix a failed session

Create the Securus account from the jail’s link, match the participant exactly, test camera/microphone/network and preserve the confirmation. Visits are recorded and monitored except approved attorney sessions. Misconduct can cause cancellation or restriction.

If a session fails, record the date, time, person, device, error, connection result and charge; contact Securus for account/charge issues and the jail for housing, approval or restriction. The county does not publish local remote price, refund, reconnection or appeal rules. Do not buy another session until the first charge is documented.

Sources: La Porte County Sheriff — Video Visitation · Securus — Video Connect · Securus Technologies

Set up calls and troubleshoot blocks

The Sheriff says Securus hosts phone calls, video calls, texting, email, picture grams and video grams for this facility. Use the official jail link rather than a search advertisement. Confirm the correct incarcerated-person identity before funding.

For no calls, check that the number accepts correctional calls, voicemail is not full, spam/robocall blocking is disabled and the account balance/product matches voice calls. Record the rejection message and contact Securus; call the jail only for housing/restriction status. Local voice rates, calling hours, blocked-number appeal, transfer balance and release refund are not published.

Sources: La Porte County Sheriff — Home · Securus Technologies · La Porte County Sheriff — Inmate Information

Messages, tablets and digital media

Securus is locally verified for texting, email, picture grams and video grams as well as calls/video, and the jail-services page verifies tablet/phone/video/voicemail/eMessaging categories. Product availability can depend on housing and discipline.

Before paying, confirm the person appears in the correct Securus facility and the selected product is available. Preserve purchase, delivery and rejection records. The county does not publish message review times, character/media limits, tablet schedule, suspension appeal or refund rules.

PART 03

Mail and money

Keep personal mail, legal mail, publications, deposits and commissary instructions task-specific.

Send personal mail without guessing the destination

Digital mail began March 4, 2024. The official page explains scan/rejection rules but does not publish the personal-mail destination or recipient format. Do not infer that 809 State Street or the money-order address is the ordinary personal-mail address. Call the jail or use AIS before mailing.

Unscannable items are returned: clippings, adhesive/Post-its, staples/paper clips/bindings, pop-out cards, glitter, packages/certified mail, cash/coins, most checks, photos smaller than 4x6 and items over 8.5x14. Write on one side and avoid marker, Sharpie, crayon and spiral-edge fringe.

Sources: La Porte County Sheriff — Mail · La Porte County Sheriff — Inmate Information · La Porte County Sheriff — Jail Contact

Books, photos and packages

Books are accepted when sent directly by a publisher, Amazon or a reputable bookstore. The mail page treats packages and certified mail as unscannable, so do not hand-send a book or assume a care-package program. Confirm the recipient identity and current acceptance before purchase.

Photos smaller than 4x6 are unscannable. Sexual images, personal property beyond photos/letters, blank cards/paper/envelopes/stamps except legal mail, games, crosswords, Sudoku and coloring pages can be rejected, placed in property or confiscated. The page does not publish photo-count, color, subscription, hardcover or package-appeal rules.

Sources: La Porte County Sheriff — Mail

Fund trust and commissary by the correct method

The lobby kiosk accepts cash and credit/debit cards; the counter accepts no cash. Online deposits and web commissary orders use Tigg’s Canteen / Express Account. Web orders are due by midnight Tuesday for delivery the following week.

A cashier’s check or money order may be mailed to: Inmate [name], c/o La Porte County Jail, 809 State Street, Suite 201A, La Porte, IN 46350. The page says stimulus checks are accepted but rejects payroll, personal and Social Security checks; that stimulus language is legacy and should be confirmed. Verify ID, fees, limits, debt deductions, reversal and release-balance handling before funding.

PART 04

Health, safety and rights

Relay urgent health and safety information and preserve unresolved medical, grievance, ADA and PREA procedures.

Relay urgent and routine medical information

For medication/medical questions call 219-326-7700, extension 2537. If there is no answer and the matter is urgent, the Sheriff says medication may be dropped at any time at the Front Desk/Main Control. Narcotics and pain medicine are never accepted. Bring the labeled prescription container and confirm acceptance; do not promise administration.

For a life-threatening situation, call 911 and the jail switchboard with the person’s identity, symptom, timing and known risk. The public pages do not publish sick-call procedure, copay, family clinical relay, hospital notification or current contractor name.

Sources: La Porte County Sheriff — Jail Frequently Asked Questions · La Porte County Sheriff — Jail Services · La Porte County Sheriff — Jail Contact

Mental health, withdrawal and suicide risk

Report an immediate suicide, overdose, withdrawal or behavioral crisis directly to the jail and 911; give the person’s legal name, date of birth if known, observed words/actions, substance/medication history and time. Do not rely on an electronic message.

The jail describes onsite assessment/care for medical, mental and addiction disorders plus counseling on request, but does not publish a family crisis line, watch-level notification, withdrawal protocol or discharge-safety process. 988 and SAMHSA can support people in the community; they are not substitutes for notifying custody staff.

Sources: La Porte County Sheriff — Jail Services · La Porte County Sheriff — Classes and Counseling · 988 Lifeline · SAMHSA National Helpline

Medication, devices and health records

Use extension 2537 before delivering prescription medicine; urgent no-answer drop-off is Front Desk/Main Control. Narcotics and pain medicine are not accepted. Ask whether the original pharmacy container, prescriber verification or unopened supply is required.

The public pages do not publish procedures for glasses, hearing aids, dental devices, CPAP, mobility aids, discharge medicine or medical-record requests. Ask who is the current clinical records custodian and obtain the release form from that custodian; do not send full records to a general fax without confirmation.

Sources: La Porte County Sheriff — Jail Frequently Asked Questions · La Porte County Sheriff — Jail Contact

Grievances and urgent escalation

No current public local source explains the incarcerated-person grievance form, emergency flag, deadline, response time, appeal levels, retaliation safeguards or outside review. The person should request the current process from housing staff and keep dates, names, copies and appeal receipts when safe.

A family member can relay a concrete safety fact to jail administration, but cannot file the person’s internal grievance by assumption. For immediate danger use the jail and 911. Ask administration how to preserve video, medical or communication records before routine retention ends.

Sources: La Porte County Sheriff — Jail Administration · La Porte County Sheriff — Jail Contact

Disability and language access

The public jail pages do not identify an ADA coordinator, interpreter line, TTY, auxiliary-aid request, accommodation decision timeline or appeal. Ask jail administration before a visit, call, hearing-related deadline or release. State the functional need and requested communication method without unnecessary diagnosis detail.

For a visitor, also ask TransPorte about wheelchair-lift needs while booking. ADA.gov explains general rights but is not the jail’s missing local request form or emergency route.

Sources: La Porte County Sheriff — Jail Administration · City of La Porte — TransPorte · ADA.gov

Sexual safety and PREA reporting

No reviewed local page publishes the jail PREA coordinator, confidential outside reporting route, anonymous option, advocacy partner, investigation contact or retaliation follow-up. Ask jail administration for the current written routes and whether a family report can be anonymous.

For immediate danger call the jail and 911. Preserve the date, location, names and exact words without conducting your own investigation. The national PREA Resource Center explains standards but does not receive or resolve this jail’s report.

PART 05

Courts, release and reentry

Separate court records, counsel, bonds, property, holds, release planning and records requests.

Case, hearing and court destination

Use MyCase for case number, charges, hearing date, court and counsel-of-record; then verify changes with the named clerk/court. AIS also reports court dates and locations. A court record is not real-time jail housing or a release authorization.

La Porte courts use more than one building: the county directory lists Circuit Court/Superior 3 at 813 Lincolnway, La Porte, and Superior 1/2/4 at 300 W Washington Street, Michigan City. Use the case record, not the jail address or a county-wide assumption, for attendance.

Sources: Indiana Judicial Branch — MyCase · La Porte County Sheriff — Inmate Information · La Porte County official directory · La Porte County — Courts and Services

Reach appointed or private counsel

Read MyCase for counsel-of-record and contact that office directly. For an unrepresented trial-court case, ask the assigned court how to request appointed counsel; the Indiana State Public Defender generally handles eligible post-conviction matters, not ordinary county trial representation.

Lawyers should use the jail’s verified private phone/video process: alljailadmin@lcso.in.gov for private number verification and a Securus private video account registered with a bar card. Families should not claim attorney confidentiality for ordinary calls/messages.

Sources: Indiana Judicial Branch — MyCase · Indiana Public Defender Commission — County office guidance · Indiana State Public Defender — Family and Friends · La Porte County Sheriff — Jail Frequently Asked Questions

Confirm and pay bond without guessing

Confirm the amount, case, type and release holds through MyCase, AIS or 219-326-7700, option 1 before payment. The clerk accepts bonds Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m.; the Sheriff lobby accepts bonds 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The public pages do not publish accepted tender, payer ID, fees, change, overpayment/refund, surety list or how another hold affects release. Ask the receiving desk what to bring and obtain a receipt tied to the case/person. Payment of one bond does not prove release if another case, warrant, probation, IDOC, federal or immigration hold exists.

Sources: La Porte County Sheriff — Jail Frequently Asked Questions · La Porte County Sheriff — Frequently Asked Questions · Indiana Judicial Branch — MyCase · La Porte County Sheriff — Inmate Information

Notary and marriage requests

For a notary appointment call 219-326-7700, extension 2324. The jail does not supply power-of-attorney forms; do not prefill a document that must be signed in the notary’s presence, and tell the incarcerated person what document is coming.

Marriage is permitted only after the incarcerated person requests the jail approval form and the Jail Commander approves or denies it. The public page does not publish license, officiant, witness, fee, scheduling or appeal steps; confirm separately with the jail and clerk.

Sources: La Porte County Sheriff — Jail Frequently Asked Questions · La Porte County — Courts and Services

Pick up property

AIS includes property information, but the public pages do not publish authorization, pickup ID, hours, entrance, deadline, shipment, release clothing or unclaimed-item rules. The incarcerated person may need to authorize a named recipient.

Before travel call 219-362-6548, option 1 and ask for exact property-release instructions. Bring government photo ID only after acceptance is confirmed. Do not assume the visitor, bond or after-hours entrance handles property.

Sources: La Porte County Sheriff — Inmate Information · La Porte County Sheriff — Jail Contact

Release timing, holds and pickup

AIS can provide a listed release date, but that date may change with court orders, sentence credit, transport, paperwork or another hold. Confirm identity, all cases/holds and release status close to pickup; use VINE for notifications but recheck with the jail.

The public pages do not publish a release window, exit door, notification practice, clothing, medications, funds, documents or transportation handoff. TransPorte is reservation demand response, not an on-call release shuttle; do not book a guaranteed ride around an unconfirmed release time.

Sources: La Porte County Sheriff — Inmate Information · Indiana SAVIN / VINE · City of La Porte — TransPorte · City of La Porte — TransPorte brochure

Plan the first days after release

Before release, ask about identification, prescriptions, property, account balance, supervision, court dates and transportation. Keep Community Corrections/Work Release and Adult Probation instructions separate from jail release papers.

Indiana 211 can connect housing, food, health and utility resources; the Indiana Reentry portal and WorkOne can support reentry/employment. Confirm eligibility and hours. The jail does not publish a discharge navigator, guaranteed bed, benefits enrollment or ride.

Sources: Indiana 211 · Indiana Reentry Resource Portal · Indiana WorkOne Locations · La Porte County official directory

Request and preserve records

Use the Sheriff public-records entry point or call the Records Division; the general FAQ describes weekday 8:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. office service and extension 2282 for records. Specify the incident/person/date range and ask which custodian holds jail logs, video, calls/messages or medical records.

The public site does not publish jail-record forms, fees, retention, appeal or provider-record instructions. Request preservation promptly when a dispute depends on expiring video or contractor data. Medical records require the current clinical custodian and authorization.

PART 06

Arrival and local logistics

Plan the exact entrance, reserved transit, seven service dates, food support and lodging without inventing a final path.

Parking, entrance and final path

The verified destination is 809 State Street, Suite 201A, La Porte, IN 46350, but no reviewed official source maps visitor parking, accessible stalls, drop-off, overflow, public entrance or after-hours task entrance. The Sheriff administration suite is 202A, so the suite matters.

Before travel call the desk for the entrance tied to the task and ask about accessible path and parking. TransPorte is curb-to-curb/shared origin-to-destination, but the exact accepted jail pickup point and interior final path are not published. Do not invent a fixed stop or final-door walk.

Sources: La Porte County Sheriff — Jail Contact · City of La Porte — TransPorte · City of La Porte — TransPorte brochure

Use TransPorte with a reservation

TransPorte provides shared demand-response transportation within the City of La Porte plus its published fringe. Reserve a scheduled appointment at least 24 hours ahead through dispatch at 219-362-6565; office is 219-326-8274 at 102 L Street. Published service is Monday–Friday 6:00 a.m.–7:00 p.m. and Saturday 9:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m.; no Sunday service.

General fare is $3.25; seniors/disabled $2.50; ages 6–11 with an adult $1.25; under 6 with a paying adult free. Exact change is required and large bills/cards are not accepted under the current-linked brochure. Tell dispatch about wheelchair-lift needs. Confirm 809 State Street, the exact curb, capacity, both legs and holiday exceptions.

Sources: City of La Porte — TransPorte · City of La Porte — TransPorte brochure · INDOT — Indiana Public Transit Systems

Seven service-date checks

Planning check from the published weekly span: Wednesday 2026-09-30, Thursday 2026-10-01 and Friday 2026-10-02 are weekday service expected; Saturday 2026-10-03 is Saturday service expected; Sunday 2026-10-04 is outside published service; Monday 2026-10-05 and Tuesday 2026-10-06 are weekday service expected.

Each operating date still requires reservation, capacity and exact destination confirmation. These are planning inferences from official hours, not booked rides. No holiday listed on the current city page falls within these 7 dates.

Sources: City of La Porte — TransPorte · City of La Porte — TransPorte brochure

Food and community support nearby

The Pax Center at 605 Washington Street, La Porte publishes a food pantry Wednesday/Thursday 12:00–1:30 p.m. and Saturday 9:00–10:30 a.m.; community meals Monday 11:30 a.m.–1:00 p.m. and Wednesday 5:00–6:00 p.m. Confirm current access and holiday changes before relying on it.

This is community food support, not jail delivery or a release guarantee. Indiana 211 can identify other current food, shelter, health and transportation resources based on eligibility.

Lodging contacts for an overnight trip

Holiday Inn Express & Suites La Porte is at 101 East Shore Court, 219-325-3700, with published 3:00 p.m. check-in and 11:00 a.m. check-out; the hotel page does not promise a jail shuttle. Hampton Inn LaPorte is at 1777 West High-Point Drive, 219-362-6100, also publishing 3:00 p.m. check-in and 11:00 a.m. check-out.

Confirm price, accessibility, age/payment rules and transportation before booking. Neither address is the jail. TransPorte service to a hotel or jail must be reserved and geographically confirmed.

PART 07

Programs and first actions

Use dated program evidence carefully and complete the first-day family safety checklist.

Custody notifications and safety planning

Use Indiana SAVIN/VINE for custody-status notifications and verify unexpected changes with the jail. Notification can lag and is not a protective order, emergency dispatch or guarantee of release timing.

For immediate danger call 911. Keep a safety plan independent of an estimated release date and use 211 for current local referrals. Do not publish a victim’s location or contact details in a jail message.

Sources: Indiana SAVIN / VINE · La Porte County Sheriff — Inmate Information · Indiana 211

Classes, counseling and eligibility

The Sheriff describes a court-ordered program lasting 28 days/56 sessions with Swanson Center; evaluation $100 and class/material $450, with possible court indigency waiver. It also describes voluntary AA/NA, request-based counseling, a Foundations of Successful Living course lasting 12 weeks, literacy books, an MRT course lasting 10 weeks, spiritual consultation and women’s character studies.

These are published descriptions, not a promise of current seats, qualifications, credit or release effect. Confirm enrollment, waitlist, fees/waiver and continuation if transferred.

Sources: La Porte County Sheriff — Classes and Counseling

Community Work Program is dated and conditional

The Sheriff describes a voluntary privilege for supervised community tasks. The page says that in 2020 the program generally sent 1–2 incarcerated people daily. Treat 2020 staffing/participation as dated, not a current schedule.

Do not confuse this jail program with county Community Corrections/Work Release. Ask the jail about current operation, eligibility, safety screening, transport, credits, discipline consequences and removal/appeal.

First-day family checklist

1. Confirm identity in JailTracker and by 219-362-6548, option 1. 2. Read MyCase for case/court/counsel, not housing. 3. Record all holds and bond details before paying. 4. Use only the Sheriff-linked Securus and Tigg’s/Express Account paths. 5. Confirm personal/legal mail destinations before sending. 6. Report urgent medication or safety facts directly. 7. Reserve TransPorte at least 24 hours ahead only after the exact task entrance is confirmed.

Clear information.
Clear boundaries.

Jail411 is an independent information resource for families and friends. We are not a government agency, jail operator, law firm or live custody-records service.

Can Jail411 tell me if someone is in custody right now?

No. Jail411 does not hold live custody records. Use the official locator for the county, state, federal or ICE system that has the person; start here if you do not know which.

Does posting bond mean the person comes home?

Not always. A probation or parole hold, another county's warrant or an immigration detainer can keep someone in custody after bond is posted. Ask the jail what holds are on the booking before you pay.

What should I confirm before visiting?

The person's current facility, the visiting schedule, approval requirements, accepted identification and arrival instructions. Check the facility page and its official sources before you travel.

What if I find something that needs correcting?

Send us the page and the detail that needs attention. Include the official source when you have one. Do not send private booking documents or other sensitive personal information.
