Use the adult Sheriff jail at 1091 Hospital Road
Johnson County Jail / Law Enforcement Center is the Sheriff-operated adult county jail at 1091 Hospital Road, Franklin, IN 46131. Jail information is 317-346-4716 or 317-346-4717; the non-emergency line is 317-346-6336.
The Sheriff calls the same operation the Johnson County Jail, Johnson County Law Enforcement Center, and Johnson County Law Enforcement Facility. The 2021 remodel/expansion raised its published design capacity to 581. These are aliases, not three jails.

Keep nearby youth and work-release buildings separate
1071 Hospital Road is Adult Community Corrections/work release; 1121 Hospital Road is the Dickinson Juvenile Justice Center. Neither follows this adult jail guide. Courts, probation, municipal police, Indiana DOC, BOP and ICE are also separate owners. Historic jails #1–#5 are closed; the current campus traces to Jail #6, opened in 1977 and remodeled later.

Use the live HomeWAV roster, then call the jail
Open the Sheriff's current-inmate page and its HomeWAV list. Search the person's legal name and preserve the displayed identity, name number/jail ID, custody listing and any booking detail available. The name number drives mail, money, calls and visits.
If there is no result, retry spelling and hyphen/maiden-name variants, allow for booking or release lag, and call 317-346-4716 or 317-346-4717. Use MyCase for the case—not physical custody. Search IDOC, BOP or ICE only after a possible transfer is identified.

Set up contact without guessing
Apply the current schedule, ID and failure paths.
Schedule the free weekend on-site video visit
The March 2026 handbook gives each incarcerated person one free 20-minute on-site video visit per week, Saturday or Sunday, 8 a.m.–4 p.m. Schedule in HomeWAV or the Sheriff lobby at least 24 hours ahead; the incarcerated person must accept before start time. Arrive 15–20 minutes early. Late arrivals are refused and must reschedule.
The Sheriff webpage instead lists Sunday 1–5 p.m. and Saturday “8 a.m.–10 p.m., 1–5 p.m.”, an internally odd overlap. Treat the handbook schedule as newer evidence but confirm the live slot and lobby access at 317-346-4716 before travel.
Sources: JCSO Inmate Handbook 26-1 · Johnson County Sheriff Jail Division · HomeWAV
Bring photo ID, keys and no other belongings
Scheduling requires the incarcerated person's legal name or jail ID plus the visitor's official photo ID, home address, phone and email. Visitors over 16 must show valid photo ID. Anyone under 18 must be with a parent or guardian; the Sheriff page also requires the accompanying adult to have a valid HomeWAV account.
Only identification and car keys may enter the visitation area—no purse, diaper bag, briefcase, phone, camera or recording device. Visitors are subject to search. Published rules do not explain alternative IDs, infant-supply exceptions, maximum children, former-inmate restrictions, long-distance exceptions or accommodation check-in; call before booking.

Use individual HomeWAV credentials and document failures
Both visitor and incarcerated person must use their own credentials; account sharing, three-way participation, recording, screenshots, social posting, driving during a visit, nudity or prohibited dress can suspend access. The handbook publishes general video availability daily 4:30 a.m.–6 p.m. and 7–11 p.m.; those broad remote windows do not create an on-site lobby slot.
Before a paid remote session, confirm the person, device camera/microphone, connection, time zone and charge. Save the confirmation, error, timestamp and screenshots. For on-site audio/video failure, notify corrections staff immediately. Jail staff cannot issue HomeWAV refunds; use 844-394-6639 or the provider refund flow.

Fund HomeWAV Voice and troubleshoot the exact barrier
HomeWAV Voice calls originate from housing tablets/video equipment. The Sheriff page lists availability daily 8 a.m.–11 p.m.; the handbook calls all resident calls collect and says public-defender calls are toll-free. Calls may be monitored/recorded, can carry a connection fee and cannot reach pagers or internet phones.
For failure, confirm the correct resident/name number, HomeWAV facility, balance, phone-number format, carrier block and whether jail security disabled service. Jail staff deliver only verifiable emergency messages, checked with a hospital, coroner or funeral home. Ask counsel how confidential legal calls are arranged; do not discuss strategy on an ordinary recorded line.

Separate device repair from account money
Tablets may provide calls, video, text, photos, books, movies, games and music. Availability can change by housing. A resident reports a broken tablet on the Visitation and Phone Request/Complaint form; repair may take weeks.
Jail staff do not control HomeWAV finances. The handbook says disputes go to HomeWAV after release and refunds are case-by-case for content that fails—not accidental purchases. It also warns that HomeWAV phone/Talk-To-Me funds do not transfer to commissary at this facility even if the interface suggests otherwise.

Separate mail, publications and money
Use the correct address, identifier and account.
Handwrite white-paper mail with the full name number
Address: First and last name + complete name number, c/o Johnson County Sheriff's Office, P.O. Box 609, Franklin, IN 46131-0609. Handwrite the full sender name and address; labels, stickers and attachments make mail undeliverable. Use 8.5×11-inch white paper, pencil or black/blue ink; no computer-generated letters, colored paper or felt-tip/crayon.
Nonlegal mail is opened, inspected and scanned to HomeWAV; originals are not retained. Mail arrives weekdays except holidays. Call the mail room at 317-346-4753 for incoming-mail problems.
Sources: JCSO Inmate Handbook 26-1 · Johnson County Sheriff Jail Division
Mark legal mail and expect inspection in the resident’s presence
Incoming legal mail must be clearly marked legal and from a legitimate legal source. The handbook says it is opened and copied in the resident's presence; the copy is given to the resident and the original shredded in their presence. A separate public-facing passage says legal mail is delivered “in person,” so counsel should confirm handling when an original matters.
Outgoing legal mail may be sent any day with an uppercase L on the envelope. Attorney and court correspondence qualifies; rehab and religious requests do not. Pro se evidentiary mail has special review/property rules. Indigent residents may request extra legal-mail supplies through the Court/Transport Sergeant form.

Use HomeWAV photos and only the narrow publication exception
Physical photos were discontinued February 1, 2024; send photos through HomeWAV. Sexual, weapon, drug/alcohol and security-risk images are prohibited, and image-text used to bypass message charges can be rejected. The Sheriff webpage's older sentence about approved third-party photos conflicts with the newer handbook.
Ordinary print books/publications are discontinued in favor of tablets. A specific new softcover religious publication may come from a reputable “dot com” distributor; the jail controls approval and limits. Newspapers may still be allowed by direct subscription under the public page, but confirm. No general personal-package program is published.

Use JailATM or a compliant money order—never mix account types
JailATM accepts web commissary deposits and web bonding; the jail page lists Mastercard, Visa and bank debit. A mailed money order must follow mail rules, name the resident and complete name number, and include the remitter's name/address. Money in possession at booking goes into the Inmate Trust Fund.
Commissary is ordinarily sold twice weekly but can be suspended. Sales are final after acceptance. Trust funds may support commissary, bond or an authorized property/money release; residents cannot transfer funds to each other. Verify fee, card acceptance and resident match before payment. The jail and provider publish different support numbers.

Protect health, safety and access
Use the exact internal form and urgent escalation route.
Send urgent facts to custody; the resident uses Sick Call
Quality Correctional Care is the named medical contractor. A resident requests routine medical or dental care on the kiosk/tablet Sick Call Request Form. For an emergency, they should notify any staff member or use the housing call box immediately; emergency care is not refused for inability to pay.
Family cannot obtain clinical information without the resident's signed medical release; the handbook says records otherwise require subpoena. When calling the jail about an urgent risk, provide the person's legal name/name number, symptoms, onset, diagnoses, allergies, pharmacy/prescriber and your callback number; custody—not the website—must route it.
Sources: JCSO Inmate Handbook 26-1 · Quality Correctional Care · Johnson County Sheriff
Use the Mental Health Request and escalate immediate danger
The handbook provides a Mental Health Request Form and says the contractor team includes a social worker. A resident should use that form for non-emergency care. For immediate self-harm, overdose, acute withdrawal or other danger, alert a staff member/call box and call jail information so custody can locate the person.
For a community crisis outside custody, the Sheriff points to 988 and Adult & Child Health at 877-882-5122. Those services do not replace contacting jail custody for a person physically inside.
Sources: JCSO Inmate Handbook 26-1 · Sheriff Crisis Intervention Team
Give verifiable prescription details; do not drop off items unannounced
The resident must provide proof of a prescription plus the pharmacy and prescriber. Medication passes ordinarily occur twice daily and the jail physician may adjust timing. Prescription glasses require medical approval and verification before drop-off. Call first; no general public drop-off window is published.
Personal medication left after release must be collected within seven working days or it may be destroyed. The handbook lists $15 medical/dental/eye/prescription handling copays and a 60-day account hold when unpaid, while stating emergencies are not denied. Ask medical/grievance staff about a disputed charge.
Sources: JCSO Inmate Handbook 26-1
Choose the correct kiosk form and preserve every response
Requests and grievances are submitted through the housing kiosk/tablet; the handbook promises a response within 10 business days. Wrong-form and duplicate submissions may be closed. For conditions/staff use Inmate Grievance Form; for medical care use Medical Grievance Form to the medical supervisor. Use the matching appeal form for an adverse or overdue response.
Save submission date, subject, facts, requested remedy and response. Disciplinary appeals go to the Sheriff within 10 days of the hearing. The IDOC Ombudsman generally has jurisdiction only for people sentenced to IDOC, after local remedies—not every county-jail detainee.
Sources: JCSO Inmate Handbook 26-1 · Indiana Ombudsman complaint instructions
Request access help from the jail before the deadline
The handbook says an interpreter is provided when a resident is language- or sight-impaired. It does not publish an external jail ADA coordinator, visitor accommodation form, ASL/LEP booking process or response deadline. Call 317-346-4716/4717 and state the accommodation, language, date and task; ask who owns the request and keep the confirmation.
Access transit offers wheelchair-lift vehicles, ADA certification for riders unable to use fixed routes, TDD 317-738-3951 and alternate formats. Transit accommodation does not prove an accessible path from curb to the jail lobby; confirm both.

Use staff, grievance or the named outside hospital contacts
The handbook states zero tolerance. A resident may tell any staff member or use the formal grievance process. It also names St. Francis Hospital South Center of Hope at 317-528-5440 or 317-528-5262 for reports of sexual assault/misconduct.
The public materials do not give an anonymous third-party jail PREA web form, retaliation contact, evidence-preservation instructions or current PREA coordinator. For immediate danger call 911; for a person inside also call jail custody. Preserve names, dates and report numbers without confronting an alleged perpetrator.

Coordinate case, bond and release
Keep court orders distinct from physical custody.
Use MyCase for the docket and the named court for orders
Search Indiana MyCase by name or case number, verify Johnson County and retain the cause number, court, next event and counsel. Court records do not prove present jail location. Johnson County's handbook lists Circuit/Superior/Magistrate courts across 87 Court Street, Annex North and 5 West Jefferson Street; the current court-services directory should control live contacts.
For a sealed/missing record or document question, call the courthouse switchboard at 317-736-5000 and ask for the court or Clerk shown in MyCase. Do not ask jail staff to interpret a judicial order.
Sources: Indiana MyCase · Johnson County courts · JCSO Inmate Handbook 26-1 · Sheriff FAQ
Use assigned counsel and the professional-visit rules
Confirm the attorney in MyCase or with the court. Attorneys and ordained ministers may visit at reasonable times with appropriate ID, except meals, lockdown or security risks; an attorney may request a contact legal visit. The jail webpage separately blocks inmate-movement activities including attorney visits from 5–7 a.m., 11 a.m.–1 p.m. and 4–7 p.m. absent a court-specific time or extreme exception.
Public-defender calls are described as toll-free. The handbook does not publish a direct public-defender intake number or attorney scheduling desk; counsel should call 317-346-4716 before arrival.
Sources: JCSO Inmate Handbook 26-1 · Johnson County Sheriff Jail Division · Indiana MyCase · Johnson County courts
Follow the actual order; do not price a release from the table alone
The Sheriff page and local rules publish a standard schedule, but a warrant or judge's order controls and some cases have no bond. The schedule does not apply to juvenile cases. The page says bonds may be full cash or 10% cash unless otherwise ordered; cash bond becomes the defendant's asset held by the Clerk and can be applied to costs.
JailATM offers web bonding, but the Sheriff restricts bond activity involving inmate movement during 5–7 a.m., 11 a.m.–1 p.m. and 4–7 p.m. Verify amount, type, case, payer name, fee and posting location with jail/court before paying; keep the receipt.

Arrange a release form and respect the seven-working-day limit
A resident may release trust money to someone not incarcerated using a Property Release form. The public handbook does not give visitor pickup hours, required ID, lobby desk or whether clothing/documents use the same form; call jail information before travel.
Property and personal medication left after release must be picked up within seven working days. Unclaimed property may be destroyed or donated; medication may be destroyed. Bring government photo ID and obtain a receipt if offered, but confirm acceptable ID first.
Sources: JCSO Inmate Handbook 26-1 · Johnson County Sheriff Jail Division
Treat a projected release as provisional
The handbook says holds or pending warrants are not reviewed through an ordinary request until the release date or bond is paid. A paid bond does not clear another case, sentence, warrant, agency hold or transport requirement. Confirm every holding authority with jail/court; do not rely on a family estimate.
Before pickup, call 317-346-4716/4717 for current custody and ask where pickup is permitted. Bring weather-appropriate clothing, medication plan, charged phone and a flexible ride. The jail publishes no guaranteed release hour, pickup lane, notification service or public waiting policy.
Sources: JCSO Inmate Handbook 26-1 · Johnson County Sheriff · Indiana MyCase
Ask for the Jail Navigator before the out-date
The resident should submit the Request to Speak with Jail Navigator form for housing, transportation, rehabilitation and release information. The handbook also directs people experiencing homelessness to their township trustee as soon as the out-date is known and lists township contacts.
United Way of Johnson County's confidential Helpline, 317-738-4636, operates weekdays 9 a.m.–4 p.m. for local health/human-service referrals and warns the county has no homeless shelter. Indiana 211 is another live referral path. Adult Community Corrections/work release is court-ordered and separate from jail release planning.

Keep custody, case, medical and payment records separate
Use the Sheriff roster/jail for present custody, MyCase or the Clerk for the docket/order, provider support for HomeWAV/JailATM transactions, and a signed release/subpoena route for medical records. A screenshot from one system does not resolve another.
Retain name number, cause number, court, provider confirmation, receipts, cancellations, messages and contact names. The Sheriff FAQ says general records checks are handled separately and county-court questions go to 317-736-5000.

Use 1091 Hospital Road and verify the public lobby
Navigate to 1091 Hospital Road, Franklin, IN 46131, behind Johnson Memorial Hospital. Sheriff-sale notices identify a Sheriff's Office jail lobby at this address, but the jail pages do not publish a visitor parking map, lot name, accessible drop-off, overflow area, after-hours door or pedestrian route. Follow posted signs, preserve marked accessible spaces and call before travel.
Do not enter 1071 (work release/community corrections) or 1121 (juvenile center) for an adult-jail visit.

Clear information.
Clear boundaries.
Jail411 is an independent information resource for families and friends. We are not a government agency, jail operator, law firm or live custody-records service.
Can Jail411 tell me if someone is in custody right now?
No. Jail411 does not hold live custody records. Use the official locator for the county, state, federal or ICE system that has the person; start here if you do not know which.
Does posting bond mean the person comes home?
Not always. A probation or parole hold, another county's warrant or an immigration detainer can keep someone in custody after bond is posted. Ask the jail what holds are on the booking before you pay.
What should I confirm before visiting?
The person's current facility, the visiting schedule, approval requirements, accepted identification and arrival instructions. Check the facility page and its official sources before you travel.
What if I find something that needs correcting?
Send us the page and the detail that needs attention. Include the official source when you have one. Do not send private booking documents or other sensitive personal information.
