Use the active adult Sheriff detention site
Jasper County Detention Center / Jasper County Jail is the adult county jail operated by the Jasper County Sheriff at 2171 N. McKinley Avenue, Rensselaer, IN 47978; the mailing address published for the Sheriff and for books is P.O. Box 296. Corrections operates 24/7 at 219-866-4993. Use extension 2 for published commissary, phone and visit questions.
This guide does not cover the Sheriff’s North Annex in DeMotte, the courthouse, police stations, Community Corrections at 2420 W. Clark Street, youth custody, IDOC prisons, federal custody, immigration custody, or a Jasper County in another state.

Confirm custody before paying or traveling
The Sheriff directs the public to Indiana VINE for county-jail status and notifications. Search the full legal name and spelling variants; retain the name returned, custody location, status and any booking or offender identifier displayed. VINE is a notification tool, not the jail’s final housing decision.
If there is no result or the status is unclear, call Corrections at 219-866-4993 and ask whether booking is pending, the person was released or transferred, an alias is used, or another agency has custody. Use MyCase for court events, IDOC for state custody, BOP for federal custody and ICE only for immigration custody.

Visits and communication
Use the local schedule and the correct CPC product.
Apply the published eligibility and schedule exactly
A person may receive visits only after the initial court hearing or when serving more than 10 actual days; the page does not explain how the “or” is applied, so verify eligibility. On-site video visits in the Sheriff’s lobby are published for Tuesday and Thursday, 6:30–9 p.m. Central, and Sunday, 8 a.m.–4 p.m. Central. Visits are 20 minutes, first come/first served, and limited to one visit per incarcerated person per visiting day.
Schedule through InmateSales, but confirm the portal and slot before traveling: the official page’s scheduling text and underlying link do not agree.

Bring photo ID and verify every unpublished exception
The jail requires valid photo identification. Visitors under 18 must be accompanied by a guardian. The local page does not publish an approval-list rule, maximum number of visitors, proof of guardianship, alternative-ID process, dress code, check-in cutoff, late-arrival rule, belongings rule, infant-supply exception, long-distance exception, special visit, or accommodation procedure.
Before choosing a slot, call 219-866-4993 ext. 2 with each unresolved circumstance. Bring only what staff confirms and preserve the reservation confirmation.

Prepare and preserve evidence of a failed session
Remote video is published Monday–Sunday, 8 a.m.–11 p.m. Central, charged per minute. Create an InmateSales account, request access if prompted, select the exact Jasper County facility and person, then schedule. CPC recommends Chrome, high-speed internet, camera and microphone, a clear account photo, and a valid driver’s license or state ID matching the account.
Test permissions before the slot. For login, connection or failed-session problems, save the transaction ID, reservation, time, screenshots and error text; call CPC video support at 866-340-7879. The local page does not promise a credit or reschedule, so ask the provider and jail separately.

Fund the correct CPC account and keep the transaction ID
The official jail page names Combined Public Communications and InmateSales for phone funding: use the CPC lobby kiosk, fund online, or let the incarcerated person move commissary funds to the phone account. CPC distinguishes Direct Pay, tied to one outside number, from PIN Debit, usable by the incarcerated person for permitted numbers.
For a blocked or missing call, verify the funded product and number, remove device spam blocking, and call CPC at 702-829-3001. CPC says transfer or refund handling requires the transaction ID; Chirper funds are not transferable, while phone-time funds may be transferable. Rates and local calling hours are not published by the jail.
Sources: inmateInfo · cpc · inmateSales
Treat Chirper messages as nonconfidential
The Sheriff says incarcerated people have a “chirping” option similar to texting and expressly warns that it is not confidential. CPC says Chirper balances are not transferable; request a refund with the transaction ID if needed.
Do not use Chirper for attorney strategy, medical privacy, threats or an emergency. Use the pod’s designated unrecorded attorney-phone route for counsel and call 911 or Corrections for an urgent safety concern.

Mail, books and money
Separate verified rules from unpublished mail and package details.
Verify personal-mail rules before sending
The current official pages reviewed do not publish a personal-letter address format, sender-return-address rule, envelope/postcard restriction, page limit, rejection notice, forwarding rule or handling of originals. The P.O. Box shown for the Sheriff and books is not proof that ordinary personal mail uses the same format.
Before mailing, call 219-866-4993 ext. 2 and ask for the complete personal-mail address and identifier, permitted paper/envelope format, photo rules and what happens to rejected or original documents. Keep copies; never send an irreplaceable original without written confirmation.
Sources: sheriffContact · inmateInfo
Use the published attorney channels and verify the envelope
The Sheriff confirms that incarcerated people may contact attorneys through U.S. mail. It also publishes unrecorded, toll-free pod calls to attorney numbers from 7 a.m.–11 p.m. Central; counsel may call the Jail Commander or Assistant Jail Commander at 219-866-4993 to add a number. Book-in-area phones may be recorded.
The jail does not publish legal-mail addressing, markings, opening procedure, delivery signature or rejection/return rules. Counsel should confirm those details before sending privileged material and follow up by phone on time-sensitive faxes.

Order new paperbacks from a retailer; do not infer package permission
Books must be new paperbacks ordered from a reputable online business and shipped directly by that retailer. No lobby book drop-offs, hardcovers or magazines. Content with nudity, violence, gangs, criminal activity, weapons, racism or other subversive jail-inappropriate material is barred. Limit: five books per month; disallowed or used books go to property.
Address books: Jasper County Jail, c/o [Inmate Name], P.O. Box 296, Rensselaer, IN 47978. Unaltered newspapers may be dropped in the lobby, reviewed for 24 hours, then placed in property or discarded. No current local photo or care-package rule was found; verify before buying.
Sources: inmateInfo
Wait until the initial hearing and use only the commissary channel
Commissary funds may be added only after the initial court hearing. Published methods are the JailATM lobby kiosk (cash or credit card), JailATM online, or a mailed money order. The jail will not accept mailed cash or personal checks. Call 219-866-4993 ext. 2 with questions.
Confirm the exact incarcerated-person identifier, current fees, lobby access and any deposit cap before paying. JailATM commissary and CPC/InmateSales communications are separate accounts. The page does not publish indigent-supply eligibility, purchase schedule, refunds, remaining-balance release or approved care packages.

Health, rights and safety
Escalate locally and preserve every response.
Route urgent information to Corrections; do not wait for a reply online
No public Jasper County jail page reviewed identifies the medical contractor, family medical-information line, sick-call method or urgent escalation ladder. For immediate danger call 911. For an urgent custody health concern, call Corrections at 219-866-4993, state that it is urgent, give the person’s full name/date of birth, concise symptoms, timing, medication/allergy facts and your callback number, and record the staff member and time.
Ask how the incarcerated person can request care and how outside clinicians may send records. Staff may be unable to disclose protected health details; giving accurate information and requesting that it reach medical staff are different from obtaining a clinical update.
Sources: sheriffContact
Escalate a suicide or acute behavioral-health concern immediately
Call 911 for imminent danger and Corrections at 219-866-4993 for an urgent concern involving someone in custody. Give direct observations and exact words, not a diagnosis. Indiana 988 is available for crisis support, but it does not replace notifying the jail that controls observation and housing.
The Sheriff lists Valley Oaks and other local addiction and behavioral-health resources, but the page does not establish them as the jail’s clinical provider. Ask Corrections who is responsible for evaluation and request the internal grievance route if the concern is not addressed.
Sources: sheriffContact · healthResources
Confirm medication, glasses and records procedures before delivery
The jail publishes no family drop-off rule for prescription medicine, controlled substances, insulin, medical devices, eyeglasses or contact lenses. Do not arrive with items or put them in personal mail without authorization. Call Corrections, ask for medical instructions, and have the prescriber/pharmacy ready to verify the prescription.
Ask whether the patient must sign a release for records or family communication and where a clinician should send time-sensitive documentation. Keep a copy and delivery confirmation; never fax and assume it was received.
Sources: sheriffContact
Start with the jail’s internal grievance route and preserve every step
IDOC’s Jail Services Division says county-jail complaints and grievances must go directly to the Sheriff and/or the jail’s internal grievance or medical system; Jail Services does not resolve them. Ask the incarcerated person to request the current form or kiosk path, submit facts and requested remedy, keep the response, and appeal within the deadline shown on the local form.
Jasper County does not publish that form, deadline or appeal chain. Family may call Corrections and Sheriff administration, but should not represent that a phone call exhausted the incarcerated person’s internal process.
Sources: idocOperations · sheriffContact
Request an accommodation from Corrections before the deadline or visit
The county posts a 2026 ADA plan, but the reviewed public materials do not publish a detention-specific request form, coordinator, interpreter process, TTY/video-relay handling, accessible visit station or service-animal rule. Call Corrections at 219-866-4993 with the functional need and requested accommodation before a visit or deadline; ask where to submit it in writing.
For transit, JCCS states that five of ten vehicles are ADA accessible and posts a reasonable-modification policy contact. Request an accessible vehicle when reserving; this does not verify the jail entrance or visit station.
Sources: countyAda · sheriffContact · jccsTransit · jccsPolicy
Report sexual abuse promptly; the local outside channel remains unpublished
For immediate danger call 911. Report sexual abuse, harassment or retaliation to any jail staff member and ask for medical safety and separation from the alleged abuser; a family member may also call Corrections. The federal PREA standards require multiple reporting channels, including an outside entity and anonymous reporting on request.
No Jasper County page reviewed publishes its PREA coordinator, outside reporting entity, third-party form, victim-advocate line or retaliation-monitoring contact. Call 219-866-4993 and request those exact channels; document whom you told and when without confronting an alleged abuser.

Court, counsel and release
Separate the court order, jail processing and supervision systems.
Use the cause number to separate court events from jail housing
Jasper Circuit Court and Superior Court are at 115 W. Washington Street, Rensselaer, not at the jail. Use Indiana MyCase to find the cause number, court, charges, scheduled events and counsel entries; then confirm time or payment instructions with the correct court or Clerk. MyCase is not real-time proof of release or housing.
Circuit Court: 219-866-4941. Superior Court: 219-866-4971. Clerk criminal divisions: 219-866-4926 / 219-866-4921 for Circuit and 219-866-4922 / 219-866-4912 for Superior.
Use the appointed lawyer, not the prosecutor, for defense advice
The county’s 2025 JRAC roster lists the Chief Public Defender office at 115 W. Washington Street and 219-866-4947. Appointment is controlled by the court; the office listing does not mean every caller already has representation. Check MyCase and court orders, then call the office with the cause number.
Counsel may ask the jail to add an attorney number for unrecorded pod calls. Attorney calls are published for 7 a.m.–11 p.m. Central; book-in calls may be recorded. The prosecutor represents the State and is not defense counsel.

Verify the signed order, amount and jail payment route before paying
The Sheriff says credit-card bond payment is accepted through its GovPayNet link. The vendor now presents as AllPaid, and the reviewed pages do not expose a Jasper County Jail bond Pay Location Code. Do not reuse Clerk PLC 6631: that official page labels it for fines, fees, traffic and small claims, not bail.
First obtain the court, cause number, exact bond type and amount; then call Corrections at 219-866-4993 for the current jail bond method and code. AllPaid’s bail line is 877-392-2455. Keep the receipt and confirm the jail received it; payment does not remove another hold.
Sources: sheriffHome · sheriffContact · allPaid · clerkPay
Do not assume property can be picked up without written authorization
No current public jail page reviewed states who may receive property, required authorization, pickup hours, ID, deadline, medication handling, clothing exchange or treatment of unclaimed items. Call Corrections before travel and ask whether the incarcerated person must submit a release form and whether all property or only named items can be released.
Record the approved recipient, date, time, entrance and ID requirement. The book policy’s statement that rejected books go to property does not create a public pickup procedure.
Sources: sheriffContact · inmateInfo
Confirm every hold and build a pickup plan that tolerates delay
A court order, bond payment or expected date is not a guaranteed release time. Ask Corrections whether the signed order has arrived, identity and records checks are complete, property and remaining funds are ready, and any other county, state, federal or immigration hold remains. Counsel should follow up by phone after faxing a time-sensitive order.
Agree on a safe pickup location only after staff gives a release window. Bring weather-appropriate clothing, charged phone and medication plan; do not wait in a restricted lot. No public page gives routine release hours, notification procedure or transport assistance.
Sources: sheriffContact · mycase
Use Community Corrections and local care as separate, verified contacts
Jasper County Community Corrections is a separate residential/supervision system at 2420 W. Clark Street, not the Detention Center. Its published programs include work release, electronic monitoring, community service and the Community Transition Program; call 219-866-2750. Probation is separate at 125 S. Cullen Street, 219-866-4902.
The Sheriff’s resource page lists 988, Valley Oaks and addiction/recovery contacts. Confirm eligibility, intake and funding directly. The jail does not publish which programs operate inside, discharge medications, ID replacement, housing placement or release referral.
Sources: communityCorrections · probation · healthResources
Use the written APRA route for public records, not for emergencies
The Sheriff requires public-records requests in writing on its APRA form. Describe the record, date range, incident or booking identifier and preferred delivery format; do not request an explanation instead of an identifiable record. Court filings belong with MyCase or the Clerk, and medical records require the medical-release process.
APRA is not an emergency, discovery request, custody lookup or way to direct a release order. For a time-sensitive custody issue, call the responsible office.
Travel and local support
Confirm entrance, reserve rural transit and plan contingencies.
Navigate to 2171 N. McKinley and confirm the public entrance
Use 2171 N. McKinley Avenue, Rensselaer, IN 47978 for the detention site. Do not navigate to the P.O. Box, courthouse, North Annex or Community Corrections. The Sheriff does not publish a named visitor lot, parking hours, accessible stall/entrance, after-hours lobby door, rideshare waiting area or vehicle restrictions.
Before leaving, call Corrections for the public entrance and current lobby access. On arrival follow posted signs and staff direction; do not leave a driver waiting in a secure or staff-only area.
Sources: sheriffContact · communityCorrections
Reserve county demand-response transit; there is no published fixed jail stop
INDOT lists Jasper County Community Services (JCCS) as Jasper County’s public transit system. JCCS describes countywide rural public transportation, not a fixed-route stop at the jail. Call 219-866-8071, option 1, and request a trip to 2171 N. McKinley Avenue plus return pickup; confirm reservation lead time, pickup window, fare, payment, companion policy and exact accessible drop-off.
JCCS publishes $1 for the first three in-county miles plus $0.10 for each additional mile and says five of ten vehicles are ADA accessible. Its office hours are Monday–Friday 8 a.m.–4 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday are closed. Those hours do not by themselves guarantee a ride.

Use the seven-day service check; call before relying on any date
| Wed Sep 30 | Published office/service window 8 a.m.–4 p.m.; reserve and confirm. |
|---|---|
| Thu Oct 1 | Published office/service window 8 a.m.–4 p.m.; reserve and confirm. |
| Fri Oct 2 | Published office/service window 8 a.m.–4 p.m.; reserve and confirm. |

| Sun Oct 4 | Published closed; arrange another ride. |
| Mon Oct 5 | Published office/service window 8 a.m.–4 p.m.; reserve and confirm. |
| Tue Oct 6 | Published office/service window 8 a.m.–4 p.m.; reserve and confirm. |
No listed JCCS holiday falls on these dates. Visit hours differ from transit hours, so a Tuesday/Thursday evening or Sunday visit needs another transportation plan.

Treat food and lodging as planning options, not promises
For a meal downtown, Fenwick’s publishes 219 W. Washington Street, Rensselaer, 219-866-3773, with hours Tuesday–Wednesday 4–9 p.m. and Thursday–Saturday 11 a.m.–10 p.m.; it is not adjacent to the jail, and hours can change. Jasper County Tourism lists Comfort Inn & Suites in Rensselaer as a lodging option but does not guarantee room inventory or rate.
Confirm directly before relying on either. For community support, JCCS provides transportation and service navigation, Community Corrections handles its own clients, and the Sheriff’s resource page lists behavioral-health and recovery contacts. None is a substitute for the jail’s custody decision.

Finding someone held here
Use the county system for a recent arrest. A state corrections search covers people in state custody. It generally will not list someone booked into a county jail this week. Bookings, bail, release, and visiting are all handled by Jasper County Sheriff’s Office.

Clear information.
Clear boundaries.
Jail411 is an independent information resource for families and friends. We are not a government agency, jail operator, law firm or live custody-records service.
Can Jail411 tell me if someone is in custody right now?
No. Jail411 does not hold live custody records. Use the official locator for the county, state, federal or ICE system that has the person; start here if you do not know which.
Does posting bond mean the person comes home?
Not always. A probation or parole hold, another county's warrant or an immigration detainer can keep someone in custody after bond is posted. Ask the jail what holds are on the booking before you pay.
What should I confirm before visiting?
The person's current facility, the visiting schedule, approval requirements, accepted identification and arrival instructions. Check the facility page and its official sources before you travel.
What if I find something that needs correcting?
Send us the page and the detail that needs attention. Include the official source when you have one. Do not send private booking documents or other sensitive personal information.
