Use the adult Sheriff jail at 150 East SR 250
Jackson County Jail is the adult Sheriff jail at 150 East SR 250, Brownstown, IN 47220. The 24-hour jail line is 812-358-1982; the Sheriff’s 24-hour line is 812-358-2141. Administrative office hours are Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–4 p.m.
This guide covers this Indiana county jail only. It does not apply to Jackson Jennings Community Corrections, juvenile detention, municipal police lockups, IDOC prisons, federal custody, immigration custody or another state’s Jackson County Jail.

Use the live roster, then call when the result is unclear
Open the Sheriff’s roster and choose Current Inmates; the same page offers a 48-hour release list. Record the exact displayed name, booking number, charges and bond fields before starting a payment or account.
The Sheriff warns that the roster is a convenience record and cannot certify accuracy. If the name is missing, retry spelling and aliases, check the release list, then call 812-358-1982. Ask whether the person is still at the jail, released, transferred, booked under another name or held for another agency. MyCase shows the case—not current housing.

Send each question to the office that owns it
Use 812-358-1982 for custody, visits, mail, money-order instructions, property and release. Use CIDNET support, 866-476-6723, for video or messaging account trouble. The Sheriff warns that ordinary email is not secure and is not monitored continuously; do not send medical, financial or identification data there.
For case records or bond processing call the Clerk at 812-358-6118. Public Defender is 812-358-1850; Prosecutor is 812-358-6130; Adult Probation is 812-358-6138. Call 911 for an outside emergency.

Plan video and exceptions
Approval, minors and failures
Video is the only published social-visit method
The jail publishes video-only social visiting through CIDNET/Encartele. Each incarcerated person receives one free 20-minute visit per week, and that free visit must use a lobby kiosk. Approved visitors may purchase additional remote visits for a phone, tablet or computer.
The county does not publish lobby-kiosk hours, remote hours, purchase price, scheduling lead time, visit frequency beyond the free visit, meal blocks or holiday exceptions. Before traveling or paying, call 812-358-1982 and verify the live schedule and lobby access.

Approval is required; the children rule needs confirmation
Only people approved by the Sheriff may visit. The jail page adds “children excluded,” but it does not explain whether that means children are excluded from approval, from all visits, or only from a particular process. It also publishes no local ID list, guardian-proof rule, dress code, belongings rule, infant-supply exception, disability exception or rejected-ID review.
Call 812-358-1982 before creating a child’s appointment or driving to the lobby. Ask what ID each person must show and whether a parent, guardian document or accommodation approval is required. Ministers must arrange visits in advance with the jail commander.

Set up CIDNET and keep the support number
Use the CIDNET customer portal linked by the Sheriff. Create the account with the visitor’s own accurate identity, locate Jackson County Jail in Brownstown and wait for Sheriff approval before purchasing a remote visit. Test camera, microphone, browser/app permissions and a stable connection before the session.
For registration, charge, connection or messaging trouble call 866-476-6723. The county does not publish its cancellation, interrupted-session, duplicate-charge, refund or appeal rules; save the confirmation, time, error screen and support case number.

Use each channel for its verified task
Calls, messages, mail and money
Do not infer the current voice-call provider
The current jail page verifies CIDNET for video and text/picture messages, but does not state that CIDNET is the current voice-call provider or publish call rates, hours or account types. A Sheriff press release names an inmate telephone number, 888-506-8407, but it is dated May 17, 2016 and cannot establish the 2026 provider.
Before funding a voice account, call 812-358-1982 and ask for the current provider and the exact account type. For a blocked number, dropped call, unused balance or refund, start with that confirmed provider and save transaction IDs.

CIDNET text and picture messages are paid and monitored
The jail verifies paid text and picture messaging through its CIDNET system. Three-way messaging, cameras or other recording devices can cause loss of privileges; nudity and sexual content are prohibited. Do not use ordinary messages for privileged legal advice, medical emergencies or time-sensitive release instructions.
Current message prices, attachment limits, delivery timing, rejected-message review and refunds are not published. Use CIDNET support at 866-476-6723 for account trouble and the jail line for a local restriction.

Confirm the mailing format before sending anything
The Sheriff says personal mail is allowed, must include a return address and is checked for contraband. The page does not publish the inmate-address format or explicitly say whether to send personal mail to 150 East SR 250. Call 812-358-1982 for the exact address, name/booking fields and current delivery method before mailing.
Use blue or black ink on uncolored paper. Do not add stickers, tape, glue, staples, paper clips, perfume, glitter, wet marks, food, stamps, prepaid envelopes, calling cards or COD items. Rejected mail may be returned, and staff notify the incarcerated person.
Sources: Jackson County Sheriff — Jail · Jackson County Sheriff — Contact
Mark legal mail; verify its address separately
Legal mail must be visibly marked “Legal,” “Confidential,” “Attorney/Client,” or “Privileged.” The Sheriff says staples in legal mail or publications are removed. The page does not publish a separate legal-mail address, attorney identifier requirements, opening procedure or rejection appeal.
Counsel should call 812-358-1982 before first use and verify the address, marking and attorney-visit process. Family should not label ordinary mail “legal.”
Sources: Jackson County Sheriff — Jail · Jackson County — Public Defender
Use new publisher-direct publications and small photos
Newspapers, magazines, books and other publications must be new and sent by the publisher; the Sheriff says no third-party vendors. Staples will be removed. Polaroids and photos larger than 4×6 are prohibited, along with sexual, coded, gambling, tattoo, weapon, drug-production, security-altering and certain computer/communications material.
The county does not publish photo-count limits, ISBN rules, package programs, return deadlines or vendor exceptions. Call before ordering because the page labels this as a mail policy effective May 4, 2020.
Sources: Jackson County Sheriff — Jail
Use JailATM, the lobby kiosk or a verified money-order path
The jail links JailATM for commissary deposits, says the lobby kiosk is available 24 hours and accepts money orders through the mail. Jail employees do not accept cash. Confirm the person and facility before paying; keep the receipt.
The county does not publish kiosk card/cash capability, fees, limits, money-order payee or mailing address, chargeback rules, indigent supplies or release-balance method. Call 812-358-1982 before mailing a money order and ask what happens after release or transfer.

Protect health, safety and access
Medical, grievance, ADA and PREA
HIPAA limits disclosure; it does not publish the care pathway
The Sheriff states that medical status cannot be disclosed under HIPAA. That does not tell families how to send clinically useful information. For an urgent concern, call the 24-hour jail line, 812-358-1982, ask for the on-duty supervisor and ask how to relay information to medical staff; do not expect confirmation of diagnosis or treatment.
No current local source names the medical contractor, sick-call method, copay, emergency escalation, hospital-transfer notice or records-release process. Ask the incarcerated person to use the internal medical-request process and record dates.
Sources: Jackson County Sheriff — Jail · Jackson County Sheriff — Contact · HHS — HIPAA for individuals
Use the 24-hour jail line for an immediate safety concern
For a reported suicide risk, psychosis, severe withdrawal or immediate safety concern inside the jail, call 812-358-1982, identify the person and ask that the information reach the on-duty supervisor and clinical staff. For an emergency occurring outside the jail, call 911.
The county publishes no mental-health contractor, crisis-screening process, observation procedure, withdrawal protocol or family-notification rule. Ask what information can be accepted and how the concern will be logged; HIPAA may prevent a return update.
Sources: Jackson County Sheriff — Jail · Jackson County Sheriff — Contact · HHS — HIPAA for individuals
Do not bring medicine without instructions
No reviewed local source says that family may drop off prescriptions, glasses, contacts or medical devices. Call 812-358-1982 before bringing anything. Have the medication name, strength, prescriber, pharmacy, last dose and allergies ready; ask medical staff to verify rather than asking custody staff to accept a bottle.
The jail does not publish medication-continuity, glasses, dental, records authorization or pharmacy rules. For records, ask which release form the patient must sign and where it must be sent.
Sources: Jackson County Sheriff — Jail · HHS — HIPAA for individuals
Ask for the written internal route and preserve dates
The county does not publish the jail grievance form, response deadline, emergency grievance, appeal or outside reviewer. The incarcerated person should request the current form or electronic process, state one issue with dates and names, keep the receipt/copy and appeal through each published level.
Family may call 812-358-1982 to ask how the incarcerated person accesses the process, but should not assume a phone complaint replaces an internal grievance. For a time-sensitive safety risk, ask for the on-duty supervisor.
Sources: Jackson County Sheriff — Jail · Jackson County Sheriff — Contact
Request jail accommodations before the transaction or visit
No local jail page identifies an ADA coordinator, interpreter process, auxiliary aids, TTY/video-relay access or accommodation appeal. Call 812-358-1982 before the visit or deadline, describe the functional need and ask who will document the request. Relay Indiana is available at 711.
For court—not jail—language access, contact the assigned court and use the Indiana Judicial Branch language-access resources. Keep court accommodation requests separate from jail requests.
Sources: Jackson County Sheriff — Contact · Relay Indiana · Indiana Judicial Branch — Language access
Ask for the current confidential reporting channel
No reviewed Jackson County page publishes a local PREA coordinator, confidential outside reporting number, advocacy partner or family follow-up process. For an immediate danger, call the 24-hour jail line and ask for the on-duty supervisor. For a non-emergency report, ask 812-358-2141 for the current PREA reporting channel and whether anonymous or third-party reports are accepted.
Do not use nonsecure Sheriff email for sensitive details. Preserve the date, time, recipient and any report number. Federal PREA resources explain the standard but do not replace the local report.

Coordinate case, counsel and release
Court, bond, property and records
Use the cause number to reach the correct court
Search MyCase by the person’s legal name and save the cause number, court, next hearing and counsel. Jackson Circuit Court, 109 S Sugar Street, handles felony cases and can be reached at 812-358-6133. Superior Court I, 109 S Sugar Street Suite 110, handles misdemeanors and traffic and is reached at 812-522-9677.
Superior Court II handles juvenile, family and protective-order matters; its rules are not adult-jail rules. A docket does not prove present custody—check the jail roster separately.
Sources: Indiana Judicial Branch — MyCase · Jackson County — Circuit Court · Jackson County — Superior Court I · Jackson County — Superior Court II
Use the assigned lawyer for legal strategy
The Jackson County Public Defender’s Office is at 111 S Main Street, Suite 226, Brownstown, phone 812-358-1850. The office represents people appointed by the courts who cannot afford private counsel. Family should provide the cause number and ask how to send information; staff may be unable to discuss privileged advice without the client’s permission.
The jail page does not publish professional-visit hours or attorney-video rules. Counsel should call 812-358-1982 to arrange legal access and verify legal-mail instructions.

Confirm the case-specific order before scheduling payment
The jail page publishes a standard schedule from no bond for murder through listed cash/surety or cash-only amounts. It also says felony arrests are not eligible to bond until the initial hearing or after 96 hours. The actual court order and current jail eligibility control. Check MyCase, then call 812-358-1982 for the amount, type, accepted payer ID and payment time.
Cash bonds require a scheduled time and are not accepted during lockdown. The Clerk processes bond money at 109 S Sugar Street, 812-358-6118, but do not take money there unless the jail or court directs you.

IDOC-transfer property has a 30-day pickup limit
When a person is released to IDOC, the jail says personal property cannot travel with that person. A family member or friend may collect it within 30 days. Property is not released during the jail’s no-release blocks or during visitation.
The page does not publish the pickup entrance, ID requirement, written authorization, property rules for ordinary release, deceased persons, holds or other transfers. Call 812-358-1982 before traveling and ask whose name must appear and which door to use.
Sources: Jackson County Sheriff — Jail · Indiana DOC — Offender Search
Plan around published no-release blocks, not an exact promise
The jail says releases occur 24 hours a day except 6–7:30 a.m., noon–2 p.m. and 5:30–7:30 p.m. This is not a promise of the exact discharge minute. Court paperwork, another hold, transportation or verification can delay release.
Before driving, confirm custody and ask whether release is approved, whether another agency hold exists, which public door is used and whether the person has clothing, medication, money and a phone number. The county does not publish pickup parking or notification procedure.

Start with local resource navigation and keep supervision separate
For food, housing, treatment, benefits and transportation, call Indiana 211 or use the Healthy Jackson County resource guide. For employment, use the state WorkOne locator. Confirm eligibility and hours directly; these are community resources, not promises made by the jail.
Probation is a separate office at 220 E Walnut Street Suite 216, 812-358-6138. Jackson Jennings Community Corrections is a separate court-referred program at 325 Dupont Drive in Seymour, 812-271-1400. Do not report to either unless release papers or the court direct it.

Separate roster, case and agency-record requests
The roster and 48-hour release page are current-custody tools. MyCase is for court dockets. For certified filings, judgments or bond records, contact the Clerk at 812-358-6118. For Sheriff incident or detention records, ask the Sheriff which public-record process and fees apply.
Medical records require the patient’s authorization and are not public records. Do not email sensitive identifiers through the Sheriff’s ordinary contact form.

Plan the trip to Brownstown
Parking, transit, food and lodging
Verify the visitor entrance and parking before leaving
Navigate to 150 East SR 250, Brownstown, IN 47220, not a Jackson County Jail in another state. The Sheriff publishes a map and administrative hours but does not identify a visitor lot, accessible spaces, drop-off zone, lobby-kiosk entrance, overflow rules or after-hours release pickup point.
Call 812-358-1982 the same day. Ask which driveway and public door serve video visitors, whether parking is available during the appointment and where an accessible drop-off may wait. Do not leave property or money at an unconfirmed door.

No reviewed public transit reaches the Brownstown jail
INDOT’s transit directory identifies Seymour Transit in Jackson County, but the city publishes service only within Seymour city limits and selected Seymour-area destinations. The jail is in Brownstown, so that service cannot be presented as a jail route. No current official countywide public operator, fixed stop or final walk to the jail was found.
Arrange a private ride for both directions or ask Indiana 211 about current transportation assistance. Do not book Seymour Transit expecting it to reach 150 East SR 250 without direct operator confirmation.
Sources: INDOT — Indiana public transit systems · City of Seymour — Public Transportation · Indiana 211
No seven service dates were invented
Because no reviewed public transit operator was verified to serve the Brownstown jail, there is no responsible basis for publishing seven jail-trip dates. Seymour Transit’s weekday calendar applies to its own Seymour service area, not to this destination.
Families should confirm any volunteer, Medicaid, veterans, disability or private ride directly for the requested date, pickup eligibility, fare, wheelchair need, waiting time and return trip.

Two Brownstown food stops with current primary listings
For a predictable stop in Brownstown, McDonald’s lists 321 N Main Street, 812-358-4551. Dairy Queen lists 115 W Commerce Street, 812-358-4030, with current store and drive-through hours on its location page. These are travel options, not jail services.
Check live hours before relying on either, especially after an evening release. Do not assume food may enter the jail; the mail policy prohibits food.
Sources: McDonald’s — Brownstown location · Dairy Queen — Brownstown location · Jackson County Sheriff — Jail
The verified hotel cluster is in Seymour, not at the jail
Brownstown jail materials do not publish lodging. Two provider-verified options in Seymour are Fairfield by Marriott Inn & Suites, 327 N Sandy Creek Drive, 812-524-3800, and Hampton Inn, 247 N Sandy Creek Drive, 812-523-2409. Neither publishes a jail shuttle.
Confirm same-day availability, total price, accessibility, cancellation and the drive to Brownstown before booking. A room does not solve the final transportation gap.

Separate systems and prepare
Boundaries, populations and first day
Keep the jail separate from courts, programs and other custody systems
The jail at 150 East SR 250 is adult Sheriff custody. Community Corrections at 325 Dupont Drive is a diversion/work-release system. Probation at 220 E Walnut is supervision. Courts and Clerk are at 109 S Sugar; Public Defender is at 111 S Main. Juvenile detention and Superior Court II youth work are separate.
IDOC prison, BOP federal and ICE immigration custody require their own locator and rules. A local court case, probation hold or future IDOC transfer does not make those systems the current housing location.
Sources: Jackson County Sheriff — Jail · Jackson Jennings Community Corrections · Jackson County — Probation · Jackson County — Circuit Court · Jackson County — Superior Court II · Jackson County — Public Defender · Indiana DOC — Offender Search · Federal Bureau of Prisons — Inmate Locator · ICE — Online Detainee Locator
Apply special rules only to the population named
The jail says it holds pretrial defendants, warrant arrests, people serving county sentences, parole/probation holds and people sentenced to state prison who are waiting for an IDOC bed. These are bounded relationships inside one Sheriff jail; they do not authorize copying IDOC or parole procedures onto everyone.
The 30-day property rule is specifically published for people released to IDOC. Minister visits require advance scheduling with the jail commander. Confirm which rule applies to the person’s actual status.
Sources: Jackson County Sheriff — Jail · Indiana DOC — Offender Search
Use VINE for custody notices and local offices for case help
Victims may register with Indiana SAVIN/VINE for custody-status notifications; keep the PIN private and do not rely on a notification as the only safety plan. For the criminal case and local victim-assistance path, call the Prosecutor at 812-358-6130.
For immediate danger call 911. Do not send a home address, safety plan or medical details through the Sheriff’s unsecured email form.
Sources: Indiana SAVIN / VINE · Jackson County — Prosecutor · Jackson County Sheriff — Contact
Treat program availability as an open operational question
The Sheriff describes a duty to make productive use of sentenced inmates’ time but does not publish a current program catalog, eligibility, waitlist, certificates, religious services, education, treatment or release-planning workflow. Ask the jail what is currently offered in the person’s housing unit and how the person requests enrollment.
Jackson Jennings Community Corrections is a separate court-referred alternative, not proof of an in-jail program or automatic placement.
Sources: Jackson County Sheriff — Jail · Jackson Jennings Community Corrections
Build a pickup plan that survives delay
Confirm the order and all holds before announcing a pickup time. Because the jail pauses releases during three daily blocks, the driver should keep a working phone, flexible arrival window and backup plan. Ask about the release door, accessible pickup, weather shelter, clothing, medications, property, remaining account funds and supervision instructions.
For food, housing, benefits or treatment, use Indiana 211 and Healthy Jackson County before release when possible. For legal changes, use counsel—not jail staff.

A practical order for the first day
- Search the Jackson County Sheriff roster and save the exact booking record.
- Call 812-358-1982 when identity, housing, bond or release is unclear.
- Check MyCase for court and counsel; do not use it as a housing locator.
- Create CIDNET only for the verified video/message tasks and wait for approval.
- Use JailATM only after confirming the person; call before mailing a money order.
- Confirm the dated mail rules, address and visit schedule before paying, mailing or driving.
- Arrange both travel legs because no public jail route was verified.

Clear information.
Clear boundaries.
Jail411 is an independent information resource for families and friends. We are not a government agency, jail operator, law firm or live custody-records service.
Can Jail411 tell me if someone is in custody right now?
No. Jail411 does not hold live custody records. Use the official locator for the county, state, federal or ICE system that has the person; start here if you do not know which.
Does posting bond mean the person comes home?
Not always. A probation or parole hold, another county's warrant or an immigration detainer can keep someone in custody after bond is posted. Ask the jail what holds are on the booking before you pay.
What should I confirm before visiting?
The person's current facility, the visiting schedule, approval requirements, accepted identification and arrival instructions. Check the facility page and its official sources before you travel.
What if I find something that needs correcting?
Send us the page and the detail that needs attention. Include the official source when you have one. Do not send private booking documents or other sensitive personal information.
