PART 01

Confirm the active adult Sheriff system

Identity, custody and responsible contacts

Use the current Detention Center at 601 S Ireland Street

Decatur County Detention Center (DCDC) is the adult Sheriff jail at 601 S Ireland St, Greensburg, IN 47240. The Sheriff and detention center share this campus. The county says detainees moved here in March 2020 from the former jail at 119 E Railroad Street.

Use 812-222-4911 for dispatch and 812-663-8125 for the county-listed non-emergency line. Ask specifically for Detention Center staff because neither number is labeled as a dedicated family-information line.

Confirm custody before paying, mailing or driving

Start with the Indiana County Jail Public Portal using the full legal name. Save the displayed name, booking number, housing field, arrest agency and case number. Then compare the case in MyCase. A court case does not prove the person remains at DCDC.

If no result appears, retry fewer fields and alternate spellings, then call dispatch at 812-222-4911 and ask for the Detention Center. Check IDOC, BOP or ICE only when county custody is not established.

Route each question to the office that controls it

For a current housing, visit, mail, medical-relay, property or release question, call dispatch at 812-222-4911 and request the Detention Center. Use 812-663-8125 for the county-listed non-emergency Sheriff line.

Use the Clerk at 812-663-8223 for case-file routing, Circuit Court at 812-663-8455, Superior Court at 812-663-8523, and Court Services at 812-663-3790 for probation rather than asking jail staff to decide court matters.

PART 02

Prepare and protect the visit

Schedule, approval and technical recovery

Schedule a 20-minute video visit at least 24 hours ahead

Onsite video visits are available in the Sheriff’s Office lobby Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–4 p.m., excluding county holidays. Visits last 20 minutes, begin on the half hour and must be scheduled no later than 24 hours before the visit. The county says a fee applies to all other video visits.

Use the county-linked InmateSales instructions, but confirm the person is still housed here before booking. Security operations can suspend visits at any time.

Sources: Decatur County — Inmate Visitation and Mail · Decatur County — How to Schedule a Video Visit · InmateSales

Keep approved visitors, minors and conduct rules visible

Only the approved visitor, accompanying minors and approved incarcerated person may appear during a visit. Nudity is prohibited. The public page does not publish the visitor-list process, accepted ID, minor documents, dress code, belongings, infant supplies, late-arrival rule or disability exception.

Call before travel. The posted sanction for a visitor’s first violation is a 30-day ban, the second is 180 days, and the third is indefinite.

Create and test the InmateSales account before the visit

The Sheriff page links to an InmateSales scheduling image. Create the account, request access to Decatur County, Indiana and the correct person, schedule in the InmateSales app, and use InmateSales View for the remote session. Do not select a namesake county in another state.

Before a paid session, test camera, microphone, speaker, Wi-Fi and ID/profile details. Save the confirmation and transaction number. CPC handles account, refund or transfer requests; the jail controls facility cancellations.

PART 03

Keep each channel task-specific

Calls, messages, mail and money differ

Treat collect calls and commissary phone cards as separate paths

The county says housing blocks have telephones and that incarcerated people may make collect calls unless they buy a phone card through commissary. The booking/court free call is one three-minute call at a detention deputy’s discretion.

Confirm the live InmateSales facility listing before funding a friends-and-family account. Calls are monitored and recorded except communications protected by law. Ask CPC about account access and the jail about a facility restriction.

Sources: Decatur County — Inmate Visitation and Mail · InmateSales · Combined Public Communications — Friends and Family FAQ

Do not expect staff to deliver personal messages

The Sheriff page states that staff will not deliver messages to incarcerated people. It confirms scanned non-privileged mail is delivered through inmate email, but it does not establish paid family email, texting, tablets or voicemail.

Use only products that appear for Decatur County in the live InmateSales account. For an urgent health or safety concern, call the Detention Center through dispatch rather than buying a message product.

Address personal mail to the jail and include a complete return address

Address personal mail: Inmate Name, 601 S Ireland St, Greensburg, IN 47240. Put your full name and return address in the upper-left corner. Non-privileged mail is scanned and delivered electronically. Mail for a person no longer held is returned when possible; otherwise it is discarded.

Do not enclose cash, money orders, checks, stamps, stamped or blank envelopes, electronics, protruding objects, obscene images or items sold through commissary.

Sources: Decatur County — Inmate Visitation and Mail

Send only allowed softback publications from a publisher or store

Softback reading books and magazines may come directly from a publisher or store. Simple greeting cards are allowed. Plastic, leather-bound and hardback books are prohibited. Publications and pictures may not contain tattoo designs, obscene images, or drug/weapon creation or use.

The page specifically bars books or magazines from Barnes & Noble even while allowing other publishers/stores. Confirm the seller and photo quantity/size before ordering. Public drop-offs are prohibited unless Administration or Medical approves an exception.

Sources: Decatur County — Inmate Visitation and Mail

Confirm deposit channels before sending money

The county confirms a detention-center commissary and that incarcerated people may buy phone cards there. It also says not to mail cash, money orders or checks. No reviewed local page publishes the current trust-deposit vendor, kiosk, online method, fees, identifiers, spending schedule, package seller or release-balance method.

Call the Detention Center through 812-222-4911 and ask for the live deposit channel. Do not infer JailATM, Access Corrections or another vendor from a different Decatur County.

PART 04

Protect health, safety and access

Urgent relays and documented unknowns

Relay urgent medical facts directly and succinctly

No reviewed public source names the jail medical provider, medical line, sick-call method or family information-release process. For an urgent issue, call 812-222-4911, request the Detention Center and state the person’s full name, date of birth, condition, last dose and immediate risk. Call 911 for an active community emergency.

DCDC’s property policy allows items pre-approved by Medical, but approval must come before delivery.

Sources: Decatur County — Sheriff · Decatur County — Inmate Visitation and Mail · Decatur County Memorial Hospital

Use the jail for an in-custody welfare relay and 988 for community support

For suicide risk, withdrawal, psychosis or a sharp change in behavior under custody, call dispatch, ask for DCDC and request that the concern be relayed immediately to custody and clinical staff. Record the time, staff name and instructions. The public site does not publish a mental-health intake or family callback route.

988 supports callers in the community but cannot replace an in-custody alert. Veterans and loved ones may dial 988 then press 1.

Sources: Decatur County — Sheriff · 988 Lifeline · Decatur County — Veterans’ Services · Veterans Crisis Line

Do not bring medication without prior Medical approval

The jail does not publish a medication-drop process. Call first with the exact prescription, pharmacy, prescriber, dose and last administered time. Do not bring pills, glasses, devices or records unless Medical or Administration pre-approves the item.

Healthcare privacy can limit what staff tells family. Ask how the incarcerated person can sign a release and how the clinician wants records transmitted.

Sources: Decatur County — Inmate Visitation and Mail · Decatur County — Sheriff · Decatur County Health Department

Separate an inmate grievance from a family complaint

The mail policy confirms that an incarcerated person may protest confiscated material through a grievance and that a sender may call the Detention Center for a complaint form. It does not publish the general grievance steps, deadlines, appeal levels or family complaint route for other issues.

Ask DCDC for the correct form and deadline. Keep dates, names, the issue, requested remedy and copies; do not place privileged facts in a public social-media message.

Sources: Decatur County — Inmate Visitation and Mail · Decatur County — Sheriff

Request access early and use the county ADA route when needed

Ask DCDC directly about accessible parking, lobby access, effective communication, interpreter needs and visit modifications. The county ADA notice says accommodation requests should be made as soon as possible and no later than 48 hours before a scheduled event.

County ADA complaints go to Doug Westerfeld, 150 Courthouse Square, Suite 117, 812-663-8451, dwesterfeld@decaturcounty.in.gov, generally within 60 calendar days. Confirm whether a custody complaint must first use the jail grievance system.

Report immediate sexual-safety concerns to DCDC without delay

No reviewed local page publishes a PREA coordinator, anonymous third-party channel or outside reporting agency. For immediate danger, call dispatch at 812-222-4911, request DCDC and say the concern involves sexual safety and needs preservation and separation measures.

Ask for the facility’s private PREA reporting and retaliation-protection process. RAINN can provide confidential community support, but it does not replace notifying the facility of an in-custody risk.

PART 06

Plan arrival and the return trip

Entrance, demand transit and local support

Confirm the public entrance and accessible route before leaving

Navigate to 601 S Ireland St, not the former 119 E Railroad jail, the courthouse or Court Services. The Sheriff lists public office hours as Monday–Friday 8 a.m.–4 p.m.; property pickup is separately listed as 24/7.

No reviewed source identifies the visitor entrance, parking lot, overflow parking, drop-off zone, accessible stall, lobby screening or after-hours intercom. Call DCDC for the exact door and parking instructions.

Sources: Decatur County — Sheriff · Decatur County Sheriff — Department History · Decatur County — Inmate Visitation and Mail · Decatur County — ADA Notice and Grievance Procedure

Reserve Catch-A-Ride both ways and confirm the exact curb

Catch-A-Ride is reservation-based public transportation for any purpose within its six-county area. Call 800-330-7603 as early as possible, up to 30 days ahead. The call center is 7 a.m.–5 p.m.; vehicles operate Monday–Friday 6 a.m.–6 p.m. and are wheelchair accessible.

No reviewed source publishes a fixed jail stop or confirms the exact secure-campus curb. Give 601 S Ireland St and ask the dispatcher to confirm pickup/drop-off, fare, eligibility, boarding window and return trip.

Seven dates are planning checks, not reservations

Planning dates reviewed against the published weekday service window: Wed Sep 30; Thu Oct 1; Fri Oct 2; Mon Oct 5; Tue Oct 6; Wed Oct 7; Thu Oct 8, 2026. Each remains unbooked and subject to first-come availability, address acceptance and live operating conditions.

Catch-A-Ride lists holiday closures, so check again before travel. A court or visit time does not reserve transportation.

Sources: LifeTime Resources — Catch-A-Ride

Use nearby food support and a predictable chain as different tools

For a predictable commercial stop, Wendy’s lists 1801 N Broadway, Greensburg, IN 47240; verify live hours before relying on it. For food insecurity, Greensburg Community Bread of Life provides free meals and food support; contact the organization for current service times and eligibility.

Neither option is part of DCDC, and neither should be treated as secure parking for a jail visit.

Sources: Wendy’s — 1801 N Broadway, Greensburg · Greensburg Community Bread of Life · Greensburg Community Bread of Life — Programs

Compare two verified hotels without assuming rates or rooms

Holiday Inn Express lists 915 Ann Blvd, front desk 812-663-5500, check-in 4 p.m. Hampton Inn & Suites lists 2075 N Michigan Ave, 812-663-5000, check-in 3 p.m.

Confirm room availability, rate, accessibility, cancellation and transportation directly. Neither property advertises a jail shuttle; the hotel parking is for registered guests.

PART 07

Keep custody systems and safety routes distinct

No borrowed rules from namesakes

Do not transfer rules from namesakes or nearby county offices

This guide covers adult Sheriff custody at 601 S Ireland only. The former 119 E Railroad jail is closed as the active jail. Court Services/work release at 319 S Ireland, the courthouse at 150 Courthouse Square, municipal police, youth placement, IDOC, BOP and ICE are separate.

Search results also mix in Decatur County jails in Georgia and Tennessee. Their JailATM, ICSolutions, mail and medical rules do not apply here.

Keep custody alerts and personal safety support separate

Indiana SAVIN can provide custody and release notifications; it does not replace direct confirmation before travel. For domestic-violence safety planning, New Directions of Decatur County lists a 24-hour crisis line at 812-662-8822.

Do not disclose a protected address or safety plan to the incarcerated person, a public comment thread or an unverified caller. Call 911 for immediate danger.

Finding someone held here

Use the county system for a recent arrest. A state corrections search covers people in state custody. It generally will not list someone booked into a county jail this week. Bookings, bail, release, and visiting are all handled by Decatur County Sheriff’s Office.

Before you travel, pay, or mail anything

Get two things first: which facility the person is actually in, and their booking or ID number. Almost nothing works without them. Then check this facility’s current instructions — rules and service providers change.

Clear information.
Clear boundaries.

Jail411 is an independent information resource for families and friends. We are not a government agency, jail operator, law firm or live custody-records service.

Can Jail411 tell me if someone is in custody right now?

No. Jail411 does not hold live custody records. Use the official locator for the county, state, federal or ICE system that has the person; start here if you do not know which.

Does posting bond mean the person comes home?

Not always. A probation or parole hold, another county's warrant or an immigration detainer can keep someone in custody after bond is posted. Ask the jail what holds are on the booking before you pay.

What should I confirm before visiting?

The person's current facility, the visiting schedule, approval requirements, accepted identification and arrival instructions. Check the facility page and its official sources before you travel.

What if I find something that needs correcting?

Send us the page and the detail that needs attention. Include the official source when you have one. Do not send private booking documents or other sensitive personal information.
