Use the adult Sheriff jail at 543 Second Street
Bartholomew County Jail is the Sheriff-operated adult county jail at 543 Second Street, Columbus, IN 47201. The published jail family line is 812-379-1753; the Sheriff administration line is 812-379-1650.
The current facility opened in 1990 and an addition opened in 2008. It houses adult county custody. Do not transfer its rules to Youth Services, Community Corrections, IDOC, BOP or ICE.

Confirm physical custody before paying or traveling
Start with the official Indiana County Jail Public Portal and select Bartholomew County. Search the full legal name; keep the displayed spelling, identifier, booking date, charges, bond and court.
If there is no result, retry without a middle name and call 812-379-1750, option 2. Use MyCase for the case record, not as proof of the current building. Check IDOC, BOP and ICE separately when county custody is not established.

Match each task to its owner
Use 812-379-1753 for jail-family questions; 812-379-1750 option 2 for custody confirmation; 844-394-6639 or support@homewav.com for HomeWAV account and connection problems; and 866-345-1884 for Access Corrections deposits.
The provider cannot override housing, discipline, approval or lockdown. Ask jail staff for the current PREA, clinical, grievance, property or release owner.

Prepare HomeWAV visiting
Match housing, account, ID and visit type.
Schedule by housing and verify the live weekend window
The county says visiting hours are assigned by the incarcerated person’s cell and can change after a move. It also publishes HomeWAV lobby visiting Saturday and Sunday from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., with 30-minute visits; segregation visits must occur during the person’s hour out.
Schedule the onsite/lobby station in HomeWAV, then call the jail before travel because a housing move can change availability. Do not read the broad 7 a.m.–10 p.m. window as a guaranteed appointment.
Sources: Bartholomew County Sheriff — Jail and Jail FAQ · HomeWAV how-to and FAQ
Prepare the account holder, ID and minor plan
The county says there is no visitor age limit, but the HomeWAV account holder must be at least 18. HomeWAV requires a head-on profile photo and clear government-issued driver license, state ID or passport when creating an account.
The county does not publish minor supervision, guardianship, visitor count, dress, belongings, late arrival, infant supplies, special visits or family-ID alternatives for ordinary lobby visits. Ask the jail before arrival. The separate visitor-clearance packet applies to entry into secured areas or sponsored/professional roles, not automatically to ordinary lobby video visits.
Sources: Bartholomew County Sheriff — Jail and Jail FAQ · HomeWAV how-to and FAQ · Bartholomew County Jail Visitor Clearance Guidelines
Separate lobby scheduling from remote HomeWAV contact
HomeWAV’s “Schedule a visit” feature reserves an onsite station. Its provider FAQ says remote video contacts are not scheduled the same way and depend on the incarcerated person being logged in and the feature being enabled locally.
Before a paid remote session, confirm the live rate and terms in the app. For login, ID, payment, camera, sound or connection problems, save screenshots, update the app, use strong Wi-Fi and contact HomeWAV. For housing availability or a denied visit, call the jail.
Sources: HomeWAV how-to and FAQ · HomeWAV friends and family support · Bartholomew County Sheriff — Jail and Jail FAQ
Separate communication, mail and money
Use task-specific providers and addresses.
Use HomeWAV for voice and keep communication funds separate
The county identifies HomeWAV for phone calls. HomeWAV distinguishes the visitor-controlled “Talk to Me” fund from the incarcerated person’s General Fund; neither is commissary and the funds are non-transferable.
Confirm the current call rate, duration, hours, voicemail, blocked-number process and confidential legal-call method before funding. Use HomeWAV for account or audio trouble and the jail for a block or restriction imposed locally.

Confirm which HomeWAV tools are enabled in the housing unit
The county’s HomeWAV agreement covered telephone, remote video, messaging, paperless forms, scanned mail, commissary ordering and professional visits. That contract describes system capability, not a promise that every tool is enabled in every unit.
Ask the incarcerated person what appears on the kiosk and confirm with the jail. Send only through the product the jail identifies; keep communication funds separate from Access Corrections trust money.

Use the exact San Antonio digital-mail address
Address personal correspondence exactly as: Bartholomew County Jail
Inmate Name – Inmate System ID Number
PO Box 1042 PMB #39193
San Antonio, TX 78294-1042.
The county says incoming personal mail became digital in January 2022 and is viewed on HomeWAV kiosks. Confirm the system ID with the jail; do not remove or add leading zeroes without current instruction.

Do not send privileged mail to the personal-mail processor without confirmation
No reviewed current source publishes the complete legal-mail address, required privileged markings, attorney-verification process, inspection method or rejection notice. The San Antonio address is explicitly published for family letters, pictures and cards.
Counsel should call 812-379-1753 before sending and obtain the current legal-mail and confidential-call procedure. Record the staff name, address, markings and date.

Send digital photos but no books, magazines or packages
The jail does not accept family-delivered photos. Families may send photos through the digital-mail address for viewing on HomeWAV kiosks. The processor rejects books, magazines, catalogs, advertising mailers and junk mail.
The jail says books are not accepted; it supplies a weekly library from approved donors. No reviewed source publishes photo size/count, greeting-card rules, package approval or rejection/original-item disposition. Confirm before mailing.

Use Access Corrections for commissary trust funds
The county directs families to Access Corrections online, the cash kiosk in the Sheriff lobby or 866-345-1884 for food/commissary funds. Select Indiana, Bartholomew County and the exact jail-confirmed name or ID.
Review the amount and service fee before submitting; Access Corrections says service fees are nonrefundable. Save the confirmation. Do not put commissary money in a HomeWAV communication fund.

Treat the no-property rule as broad, with narrow published exceptions
The jail summary says property is no longer accepted and clothing/footwear must come from commissary. The FAQ separately permits prescription medication, glasses/contacts, wedding rings, religious necklaces and leadership-approved trial clothing at the front lobby.
Call before bringing anything. For trial clothes, obtain leadership approval and label exactly as directed. Do not assume ordinary street clothes or shoes will be accepted.
Protect health, safety and access
Relay urgent facts and preserve unavailable procedures as gaps.
Relay urgent clinical facts through the jail; do not call an expired contractor promise current
A 2024 county agreement named Advanced Correctional Healthcare for jail health care only through January 31, 2025. No reviewed current renewal established the 2026 contractor, staffing, sick-call route, copay or family clinical line.
For an urgent concern, call the jail and give name, booking identifier, symptoms, onset, medication/allergy facts and callback number; ask staff to relay to the current clinical team. Call 911 only for an outside emergency, not to seek private patient information.
Sources: Commissioners minutes — Advanced Correctional Healthcare renewal · Bartholomew County Sheriff — Jail and Jail FAQ · Bartholomew County Sheriff 2018 Annual Report
Escalate safety facts and plan community continuity separately
Tell jail staff if there is a suicide threat, acute confusion, withdrawal risk or missed psychiatric medicine. Ask the receiver to repeat the facts and identify the next step; privacy rules may limit what staff can disclose.
For post-release continuity, Centerstone publishes services in Columbus, including 720 North Marr Road. Confirm eligibility and appointments directly; a community clinic cannot direct jail treatment.
Sources: Bartholomew County Sheriff — Jail and Jail FAQ · Centerstone Columbus — North Marr Road
Confirm medicine drop-off and authorization before travel
The jail FAQ says prescription medication, glasses and contacts may be dropped at the front lobby, despite the broad no-property statement. It does not publish original-container rules, drop hours, acceptance screening, refill responsibility, durable equipment or records-release procedure.
Call first with the medicine name and prescriber. Bring nothing unless staff confirms the exact container, quantity, label, receiver and time. Ask the clinical team for its authorization form if records are needed.

Keep the internal grievance and external Sheriff complaint distinct
No reviewed public page explains the incarcerated-person request, grievance, appeal, deadline, retaliation protection or family complaint receipt. Ask jail staff how the person files and keeps a copy or tracking number.
The Sheriff publishes a citizen-complaint form for complaints about agency personnel. That external form does not replace the internal medical, conditions or classification grievance. Preserve dates, names and prior requests.
Sources: Bartholomew County Sheriff Citizen Complaint form · Bartholomew County Sheriff — Jail and Jail FAQ
Request jail access first, then use the county civil-rights channel
Ask the jail for an accessible lobby station, mobility route, effective communication, interpreter or disability modification before the visit. Bartholomew County also publishes ADA and Title VI complaint procedures.
The current Title VI plan names Chris West, Auditor’s Office, 440 Third Street Suite 102, 812-379-1510. Use that route for a county access or discrimination complaint; it does not replace urgent jail safety action.
Sources: Bartholomew County ADA / Title VI hub · Bartholomew County Title VI Nondiscrimination Plan · Bartholomew County Sheriff — Jail and Jail FAQ
Ask for the current adult-jail PREA reporting channel
The Sheriff’s secured-area visitor packet requires PREA training for approved clergy or sponsored visitors, but no reviewed public adult-jail page identifies the current PREA coordinator, anonymous third-party method or investigation-status contact.
Call the jail and ask specifically for the adult-jail PREA channel. Do not use Youth Services or Community Corrections PREA documents for an adult-jail report; those are separate facilities.

Coordinate case, counsel, bond and release
Use the responsible office and confirm every hold.
Use MyCase for the docket and the jail for custody
Search Indiana MyCase by name or cause number for court, hearing, filings and public orders. Bartholomew County is the Ninth Judicial Circuit; adult felony and criminal matters may appear in Circuit or Superior Court.
Verify the courtroom and whether the appearance is in person or video with the Clerk at 812-379-1600. A docket entry does not prove release, transport or present housing.
Sources: Indiana Courts — MyCase · Bartholomew County Clerk · Bartholomew County Courts · Indiana Judicial Branch — Bartholomew local rules
Route appointed-counsel questions through the court
Indiana says trial and direct-appeal public defenders are provided at county expense for eligible indigent defendants. No reviewed county page publishes a central Bartholomew public-defender office contact.
Use MyCase to identify the court and counsel of record, then call the Clerk/court for appointment routing. Families may give counsel a message, but counsel generally cannot disclose confidential client information without authorization.
Sources: Indiana State Public Defender — office routing · Indiana public defender FAQ · Indiana Courts — MyCase · Bartholomew County Clerk
Use the Clerk by day and the jail after hours, then confirm release holds
The Sheriff says cash bonds are accepted at the Clerk’s Office Monday–Friday 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.; after 5:00 p.m., bonds are paid at the jail, which accepts cash and credit card bonds. Call before paying to confirm the exact amount, location, accepted card, fee and cause number.
Payment does not guarantee immediate release. Ask whether another county, court, IDOC, federal or immigration hold remains and where release will occur.
Sources: Bartholomew County Sheriff — Jail and Jail FAQ · Bartholomew County Clerk · Indiana Courts — MyCase
Confirm the authorized recipient and exception before pickup
The current public page does not publish voluntary property-release forms, recipient ID, pickup hours, abandoned-property deadlines, vehicle/key handling or release-day handoff. Its broad no-property rule concerns items brought in, not proof of a pickup procedure.
Call the jail with the person’s name/ID and ask whether written authorization is required, what the recipient must bring, the property-office time and where to enter. Do not travel on an assumption.
Sources: Bartholomew County Sheriff — Jail and Jail FAQ · County jail-question handoff
Build a pickup plan without guessing the release time
Ask the jail whether bond, sentence completion, transport, medical clearance and every outside hold are cleared. Confirm the release door, identity required for a pickup person and whether medicine, documents, cash balance and property leave together.
Keep the ride flexible. The public sources do not publish a release-processing window, rideshare zone or after-hours shelter handoff.
Sources: Bartholomew County Sheriff — Jail and Jail FAQ · Indiana SAVIN
Ask for current BART and Court Services eligibility before discharge
The Sheriff’s 2021 report documented the jail’s BART substance-use treatment program. Court Services separately operates Community Corrections residential/work-release programs. Neither source proves automatic enrollment or a current discharge package.
Ask jail classification/program staff for current BART status and application. For post-release treatment, benefits, ID, medication and supervision, ask for a written referral and first appointment before release when possible.

Use the correct public-record owner
Use MyCase for public case documents. Use the Clerk’s public-information request when the cause number is known and the requested court record can be emailed. Use the Sheriff’s general record request for agency records; medical records require the clinical team’s authorization process.
State the record, date range and cause or incident number. Do not ask the jail-family line to interpret a court order.

Plan the downtown last mile
Use the verified loop while confirming the door and local availability.
Confirm the public lobby and accessible route at 543 Second
Navigate to 543 Second Street, Columbus, not the Courthouse, Youth Services or Community Corrections. The county does not publish the public jail door, visitor parking rows, after-hours access, screening items, accessible curb cut or release pickup point.
Before travel, call 812-379-1753 and ask for the correct door for lobby video, medication, approved trial clothing, bond or release. Those tasks may use different access points.

Use the Orange Loop stop at 2nd & Lafayette, then verify the final walk
ColumBUS Transit publishes the Orange Loop at 2nd & Lafayette at :11 past the hour. Buses board only at designated signed stops, and fixed-route fares are currently paused. Service hours are Monday–Friday 6:00 a.m.–8:00 p.m. and Saturday 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.; no Sunday fixed-route service is published.
The stop is near the 543 Second Street jail, but the operator does not publish a jail-lobby path. Call 812-376-2506, check the live tracker, and ask the jail about the safest public entrance before walking.

Check seven dated service days before relying on the loop
The seven-date table covers September 30 through October 7, 2026, skipping Sunday because no Sunday fixed-route service is published. Each entry applies the published weekday/Saturday pattern, not a live-trip guarantee.
Check alerts and the tracker on travel day. If disability prevents independent fixed-route use, eligible Call-a-Bus riders can reserve up to two weeks ahead at 812-376-2507; eligibility approval is required.

Use verified downtown resources without assuming availability
For a hot meal, the City transit FAQ lists First Christian Church, 531 Fifth Street, Saturday 4:00–5:00 p.m. except the third Saturday; verify before relying on it. Centerstone publishes behavioral-health services at 720 North Marr Road.
For current lodging, maps and dining help, contact Columbus Visitors Center, 506 Fifth Street, 812-378-2622, Monday–Saturday 10:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. Do not assume a room, meal, price or eligibility.

Keep facilities and authorities distinct
Do not transfer adult-jail rules to youth or alternatives.
Keep adult jail, youth and Community Corrections separate
Youth Services Center, 2350 Illinois Street, has secure juvenile detention, shelter and day treatment with its own rules. Community Corrections, 540 First Street, operates residential/work-release programming under Court Services. Neither follows the adult jail family rules.
Courts, probation, municipal police, IDOC, BOP and ICE are also separate. A person arrested locally may move between authorities; re-check custody before every payment, visit or mailing.

Indiana SAVIN provides custody information and lets users register for status-change notifications. Registration is confidential, but no alert service should be the only safety measure.

Finding someone held here
Use the county system for a recent arrest. A state corrections search covers people in state custody. It generally will not list someone booked into a county jail this week. Bookings, bail, release, and visiting are all handled by Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office.

Clear information.
Clear boundaries.
Jail411 is an independent information resource for families and friends. We are not a government agency, jail operator, law firm or live custody-records service.
Can Jail411 tell me if someone is in custody right now?
No. Jail411 does not hold live custody records. Use the official locator for the county, state, federal or ICE system that has the person; start here if you do not know which.
Does posting bond mean the person comes home?
Not always. A probation or parole hold, another county's warrant or an immigration detainer can keep someone in custody after bond is posted. Ask the jail what holds are on the booking before you pay.
What should I confirm before visiting?
The person's current facility, the visiting schedule, approval requirements, accepted identification and arrival instructions. Check the facility page and its official sources before you travel.
What if I find something that needs correcting?
Send us the page and the detail that needs attention. Include the official source when you have one. Do not send private booking documents or other sensitive personal information.
