Georgia Jails & Prisons
Every jail, prison and detention facility in Georgia — addresses, phone numbers, visiting rules, and the official inmate search for each one.
Georgia has 34 state prisons operated by Georgia Department of Corrections, plus 180 county and local jails. This directory lists 76 because it still carries institutions the agency is closing. How we count.
- ArrestedTaken to the county jail for the county where the arrest happened — not where they live.
- County jailHeld here while the case runs. 180 local jail facilities in Georgia. Bail is set and posted here.
- Court and sentencingMost people leave from here. Only a sentence to state time moves someone into the prison system.
- Released, fined, or a county sentence — the path ends here for most people
- Reception centreWeeks, not days. They are scored, assessed and assigned. Expect little contact during this stage — this is the part families are least warned about.
- InstitutionPlaced at one of 34 institutions, at a security level set by their score — not by the worst thing the prison is allowed to hold.
- Release and supervisionThey report to a parole or probation office, which is rarely the city they were held in.

Jails, state prisons, federal facilities, and ICE detention are run by different agencies under different rules. These groups are how we file the records — not official counts of what the state operates.
What do you need to do in Georgia?
Each link goes to the agency that actually handles it. Individual facilities can still add their own rules, so confirm with the one holding the person.

Finding someone
The Georgia Department of Corrections publishes a public offender search covering people in GDC facilities. Search by name, ID or case number. GDC states it makes no warranty as to accuracy or completeness.
Staying in touch in Georgia
Phone calls
Phone calls from Georgia prisons (Securus, flat 8¢/minute)
Georgia DC phone service is provided by Securus. GDC publishes a flat rate of 8 cents per minute for every call type — local, long distance, and international alike — so a maximum-length 25-minute call costs $2.00 (international adds carrier fees, and GDC notes the posted rates exclude taxes and regulatory fees). Set up a prepaid collect or direct-bill account at the Securus website or by calling 1-800-844-6591 before expecting calls; multiple phone numbers can sit on one prepaid account, and calls originate from inside only. An offender can also move money from their trust account to a Securus debit calling account in $1 increments. Calls are capped at 25 minutes, may be monitored and recorded, and can only reach numbers on the offender's Call Allow List. Call forwarding and three-way calling are not permitted.

Sending money
Sending money to a Georgia prison — approved visitors only, and there's a free route
Georgia's first rule: you must be on the offender's approved visitor list to send money by any method — deposits from anyone else are rejected. The free route: GDC's own money-order voucher system — print the voucher, mail it with a money order, no fee, allow up to two weeks. Faster, fee-charging routes all run through JPay: online or the app ($3.50 on deposits under $20, $5.00 to $100, $6.50 above that), by phone 24/7 at 1-800-574-5729, or cash via MoneyGram at CVS and Walmart using Georgia DOC receiver code 6857 ($4.95). GDC caps deposits at $200 each. Money sent for probation supervision uses a different receiver code (6901) — don't mix them up.

Mail and photos
Mail to Georgia prisons is still real mail — addressed to the facility
Georgia does not route incoming mail through a central scanning center the way Florida and Texas now do — reporting on state mail policies describes Georgia inmates as still receiving actual physical mail. Address letters with the offender's full name and GDC ID number to the facility's own mailing address, which is on that prison's page here, not to a PO box in another city. Georgia's administrative rules (Ga. Comp. R. 125-3-3) govern the rest: all incoming and outgoing non-privileged mail is subject to inspection and random reading, the superintendent may reject correspondence judged a threat to security or good order, and mail between inmates is inspected for contraband. Privileged legal mail is handled separately. Secondary reporting puts the enclosure limit at 25 pages per envelope, but GDC publishes no consolidated mail page, so confirm limits with the facility before mailing a thick envelope. Never enclose cash or a money order with a letter — money has its own voucher process. Electronic messaging is available through JPay, where the message arrives on a kiosk or tablet.

Planning a visit
Visiting a Georgia prison: the list changes only twice a year
Georgia's visitation gotcha comes first: an offender's visitor list can generally be changed only in May and November (and when they arrive at their first permanent facility), never earlier than six months from the last change request — miss the window and you wait. Address changes are exempt from that six-month rule. Immediate family (parents, brothers, sisters, spouse, grandparents, grandchildren, and children) are requested by the offender directly; everyone else applies as a 'significant relationship visitor' on a form the offender initiates, decided within fourteen working days. Visits happen Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays in two-hour blocks, scheduled through GDC's portal. Everyone 16 and over needs photo identification. The dress code is strict and enforced — men need shirts and full-length trousers, skirts and dresses may not sit more than two inches above the knee, and nothing sheer or strapless. Bring only ID, car keys, up to $20 in coins or a debit card for vending, and bottled formula if you have an infant.

Where in Georgia?
Most people know the county or the city, not the name of the facility. Start there. Bail is set and posted at the county jail, so the county page is also where the sheriff, the custody search and the court contacts live.
