Visiting, calls and video
Arrange visits through the Sheriff's current video instructions. Facility approval and valid photo identification are required.
Video visits
SCSO says incoming remote video uses the GettingOut Visits app; visitors must be on the phone PAN list, and the PAN must match the GettingOut account phone number. The app must be open and logged in when the incarcerated person initiates a call. Onsite video scheduling uses shelbycountytn.gtlvisitme.com/app or the GTL VisMobile Android app; availability is shown during scheduling, times may change, facility approval and valid photo ID are required.

Provider phone support and funding
SCSO publishes GettingOut support at (866) 516-0115 and ConnectNetwork at (877) 650-4249. Its page lists GettingOut deposits for messages/video and ConnectNetwork PIN debit; it does not publish a current men's-jail rate table.

Address comparison for visitation
The dedicated SCSO visitation page says Main Jail at 225 Poplar, while SCSO's jail FAQ, current jail-information page, County facility listing and SCSO account/mail instructions use 201 Poplar. Confirm the current visitor entrance before traveling; these addresses are not interchangeable mail destinations.

Jail Annex: ID, children and belongings
The Sheriff publishes the following rules for public visitors entering the Jail Annex. These are in-person entry rules, not instructions for a remote video call. They do not resolve which Poplar Avenue entrance your appointment uses.
- Adult visitors must present valid photo identification; the published policy names a state driver’s license or federal ID.
- Visitors under 18 must be accompanied and supervised by an adult; the policy allows one child per adult. For ages 13–17, it names school ID and an approved early-dismissal slip for visits before school hours end, including for homeschooled students.
- Visitors must pass the walk-through security scanner. Loud talking, profanity and obscene language or gestures are prohibited.
- Do not bring food or drinks, tobacco or smoking products, purses, umbrellas, cellphones, smart watches or pagers into the visiting facility. The policy lists a baby-item exception: one plastic baby bottle, one baby blanket, one diaper and a car seat.
- Public lockers cost 50¢ and take quarters only. The Sheriff does not accept responsibility for belongings left in them.
- Wear appropriate clothing and footwear; house shoes are not accepted. The policy prohibits transparent, provocative or offensive clothing and gang, drug, sex or violence references. Read the full clothing and visitor-eligibility rules before arranging an in-person visit.

Money and account deposits
Deposits are separate from phone/video accounts.
Kiosk and account office
SCSO says the visitation-lobby kiosk accepts cash only in its FAQ; its deposit page says VendEngine/Tyler handles deposits and the lobby kiosk accepts cash or debit/credit cards. The inmate-account office is at the 201 Poplar visitation lobby, open 8:00 a.m.–7:00 p.m., seven days a week. The FAQ states a maximum $200 per week, currency only, no checks.

Mail, clothing and property
Use the 201 Poplar ordinary-mail format; legal and property questions require facility confirmation.
Ordinary mail
SCSO requires a complete return address. Softback books and magazines must come directly from the publisher. The official FAQ's mail destination is 201 Poplar, not 225 Poplar.

Court clothes and property release
Court clothing may be brought to the main lobby 24 hours a day, seven days a week; conservative clothing is required and tennis shoes are not accepted. Property release must be initiated by the inmate using a property-release form; proper ID is required and evidence/holds block release. The FAQ refers to the Jail Annex visitation area for the court clerk/property workflow; no separate public property counter hours were established.

Medical, emergencies and release
Use public jail-information routes; do not send private medical or booking information to Jail411.
Medical concerns
SCSO says a contract medical provider supplies 24-hour care, with an MD and physician assistant on duty or on call for emergencies. The FAQ directs medical questions to Jail Information at (901) 222-4703 for the main jail; Older directory records also list (901) 222-4700.

Family death or urgent message
For a death in the family, SCSO says callers may speak with the facility Corrections Deputy/CDO or the chaplain through Jail Information at (901) 222-4703; the caller should provide the person's name, relationship and factual information. This is an urgent-contact route, not a promise of medical disclosure or visitation.

Bond and release
SCSO says the 24-hour court clerk is in the Jail Annex visitation area; cash bond or a licensed bonding company may be used, and SCSO does not recommend bonding companies. This is not the courthouse directory and should not be conflated with Criminal Court.

Release processing takes time
A release order does not mean someone can leave immediately. The Sheriff lists fingerprinting, photographs, warrant and national-record checks, processing and medical checks among the steps involved. Its FAQ says actual release may take 3 to 6 hours after release is ordered, but there is no exact time. Do not treat that range as a pickup appointment or guarantee.

Access and parking
Do not turn courthouse parking references into jail parking claims.
Published access evidence
SCSO identifies the Main Jail as adjacent to the Walter Bailey Criminal Justice Complex at 201 Poplar. A visitor parking lot, ADA entrance route, parking price and accommodation procedure were not established in the reviewed current sources. The 225 Poplar label appears only on the visitation page and remains unresolved.

Court, counsel and family support
Court offices and defense services are separate from jail housing. Use your court notice to identify the correct court; these office hours are not hearing times or jail visiting hours.
Shelby County Criminal Court Clerk
For Criminal Court clerk services, call (901) 222-3200. Published office hours are Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m. The clerk handles court records and administrative questions, not legal representation or jail visiting appointments.

Public defender and appointed counsel
The Public Defender’s office says to tell the judge at the first court appearance if you need a public defender. The court determines eligibility and appoints counsel for people found indigent; a family phone call does not itself appoint an attorney.
Call (901) 222-2800 for questions or to reach an already-appointed attorney. The main office is open Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Someone in custody can ask jail staff to contact the office on their behalf; they do not need to wait until release.
After hours, the office asks callers to leave their name, case number and next court date in its voicemail. Give case information directly to the Public Defender, not to Jail411.

Parking for the downtown defense office
The Public Defender lists the 201 Poplar Garage and street parking on Second Avenue for its main office. These are published office-parking options, not a confirmed jail visitor lot, ADA route or guaranteed available space. Jail East visitors should not use this downtown office address as their visiting destination.

Reentry and mental-health-related defense support
For reentry services, call (901) 222-2800 and ask for re-entry. The office says this service is for anyone ever charged with a crime in Shelby County, whether or not they were a Public Defender client.
For a person charged with a crime in Shelby County who has mental-health concerns, the same office directs callers to the Special Litigation Unit or Jericho Project. This is a legal/support referral, not the jail medical department or an emergency medical line. Use the medical-contact section above for a concern about care in custody.
