How Mendocino County custody fits together

The Mendocino County Sheriff's Office runs Mendocino County Jail at 951 Low Gap Road in Ukiah, the county's local adult jail. Sheriff administration is in the same building, next to the jail, and the Sheriff's Ukiah office uses the same number as the jail: (707) 463-4411.

A city police department, the California Highway Patrol or another agency may make the arrest. People they book into county jail go to 951 Low Gap Road. For custody after that, use the New World booking log, not the police department.

Youth are held at Mendocino County Juvenile Hall, 585 Low Gap Road, which County Probation runs. Parlin Fork Conservation Camp #6 near Fort Bragg is part of the state prison system. Chamberlain Creek Conservation Camp #17 is closed. County government offices use 501 Low Gap Road, and that is not the jail. The courthouses are at 100 North State Street in Ukiah and 700 South Franklin Street in Fort Bragg.

If someone is at Mendocino County Jail

Video visits: schedule on GettingOut, 7 days a week, unless the person's classification, housing unit or disciplinary status makes them ineligible. Sheriff staff can help only with on-site visiting, not with video. For an in-person visit at 951 Low Gap Road, call (707) 463-4411 first; the days and booking steps are in the visiting details below.

Add money through mycarepack.com or the 24-hour kiosk in the jail lobby. Do not mail cash or money orders. Before you write a letter, call the jail for the mailing address.

Write down the booking number shown on the booking log. The jail guide asks for it on letters and before a deposit.

How to find someone in custody

Search the Sheriff's official booking log ↗ (the New World inmate inquiry) for the adult jail. Jail411 does not host inmate names. If the log does not open, use the Booking Logs link on the Sheriff's Corrections page ↗.

If the log does not show the person, call (707) 463-4411. If there is no booking yet, ask the agency that made the arrest, then confirm with the jail. Mendocino County has no city police jail, so look for a booked adult at the county jail. Court holding at Mendocino Superior Court and at the Fort Bragg Justice Center is only for court appearances. To follow custody changes, register with VINE ↗ or call 1-877-411-5588.

The booking log covers the adult jail only. For a youth, call Juvenile Hall intake at (707) 234-6682. For someone in state custody, including Parlin Fork camp, search CIRIS ↗. For federal custody, use the Federal Bureau of Prisons inmate locator ↗. For immigration custody, use the ICE Online Detainee Locator ↗; people under 18 do not appear there.

Sheriff's 2014 visiting policy says visiting is held every day except Friday and Sunday, during day and night shifts, and that each person gets at least two visits a week, totaling 60 minutes or more. Visits are booked through the front desk of the Jail Administration Building during normal business hours, in the week before the visiting day, first come, first served, with walk-ins only if space allows. Up to three visitors may visit one person at a time, and a child who can walk counts as one visitor. In-person visits take place in a visiting area with a glass partition. Each sign-up is for one person in custody. Each visitor fills out a visitor registration form in the lobby, and staff check visitors for arrests and warrants.

The policy also allows a special visit, with a jail supervisor's approval, if you are traveling a long distance, have a disability or something unexpected comes up. Ask when you call.

Sheriff staff cannot help with video visits. A person's classification, housing unit or disciplinary status can make them ineligible for video. For help, or for the equipment you need at home, call the GettingOut helpline at 1-866-516-0115, 24 hours a day.

ID, children and visiting rules

Bring a valid state driver's license, a state ID card, or other official ID with your photo, physical description and signature. Any other ID needs a jail supervisor's approval. A visitor without adequate ID will not be allowed to visit.

Anyone under 18 must come with an adult. The person's own children may visit with an eligible adult visitor, who must show proof of the relationship. An emancipated minor, or the person's spouse who is under 18, may visit alone with proper ID. Visitors who cannot keep their children under control will not be allowed to visit.

Follow the dress code posted at the jail; clothing that is obviously revealing is not allowed.

Do not bring cameras, cell phones, recorders, purses, bags or briefcases; staff will not hold your belongings.

Visitors may be searched. Do not come under the influence, and do not smoke, eat or drink. Do not pass anything to the person without staff approval.

You may be turned away if you have a contagious illness, have been caught smuggling or involved in an escape plan, have a prior felony conviction (unless a jail supervisor approves) or were held in this jail in the past six months (unless you have permission).

These rules are from the Sheriff's 2014 visiting policy. Call (707) 463-4411 to confirm them before you go.

Calls, letters and money

Phone calls

The Sheriff does not name the company that handles voice calls; ICSolutions and GettingOut handle video visits. Before you set up an account, call the jail at (707) 463-4411 and ask which phone company to use. For account help, call ICSolutions customer service at 1-888-506-8407 or GettingOut at 1-866-516-0115.

The Sheriff's 2013 phone policy says calls can be paid from a debit account, from a prepaid account or collect. The owner of the phone number being called opens a prepaid account directly with the phone company, and collect calls go through at the phone company's discretion. Calls may be monitored and recorded. Phones are available from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. daily for people in general population, and each housing unit has a TDD phone. After booking, a person gets at least three calls, plus two more if they are a custodial parent arranging child care. Unused debit money can be refunded if the person asks within 30 days of release; the refund takes about six to eight weeks.

California caps in-state calls made by people in custody at $0.045 per minute, for debit, prepaid and collect calls. Fees for single calls, paper bills, live agents and automated payments are banned, and third-party payment fees are capped at $6.95. Providers had to comply by June 23, 2026. Read the jail guide's phones and video section

Letters

The Sheriff does not publish a mailing address for letters. Call the jail at (707) 463-4411 for the exact address and current mail rules before you mail anything. Put the person's full name and booking number on the letter and your full return address on the envelope. Mail without a return address is not delivered.

The Sheriff's 2019 mail policy says there is no limit on how much mail a person can receive. Incoming mail is opened in front of the person and checked for contraband and money. Legal mail is opened only in the person's presence. A person with no money can send two postage-free letters a week.

Do not send stamps, envelopes, writing paper, blank paper, pages from books, bookmarks, opened forwarded letters, multi-page greeting cards or cards with raised surfaces. A single-page folded card is allowed. Pre-stamped postcards are allowed; postcards with stamps stuck on them are not.

Photos can be no larger than 4 x 6 inches. Polaroids, and photos with nudity or suggestive or offensive images, are refused. The jail's property policy also allows digital photos printed on plain 8 1/2 x 11 inch paper. Books and magazines must come directly from the publisher or a recognized distributor. Packages, newspapers and magazines mailed by individuals are refused; only attorneys and the court are excepted. Mail that arrives after the person is released goes back to the sender.

Do not mail cash or money orders; the jail will not accept them. Do not send youth mail to the adult jail. Do not send adult-jail mail to Juvenile Hall at 585 Low Gap Road, Adult Probation at 589 Low Gap Road, Pretrial at 579 Low Gap Road, the county offices at 501 Low Gap Road, the courthouse at 100 North State Street, the Public Defender at 175 S. School Street, CDCR parole at 798 North State Street or Parlin Fork camp. See the jail guide's list of what not to mail

Deposits

Deposit through mycarepack.com ↗ or the kiosk in the jail lobby, which is open 24 hours. Kiosk deposits can take up to 72 hours to reach the account. For money to use at Wednesday commissary, deposit before 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday. Do not mail cash or money orders. The Sheriff's 2017 money policy says the lobby kiosk takes cash and credit cards, and that a money order mailed to the jail is sent back marked refused.

mycarepack customer service: 1-800-353-4330. In most cases a person can receive one care package a week, and an order takes 2 to 7 days to arrive. Deposit and kiosk fees for Mendocino are not published; ask mycarepack before you pay.

The jail releases money to someone outside only on weekdays, excluding holidays, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and from 1:00 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. Bring your ID and the bill the person is helping to pay. The same policy returns the person's balance on a debit card at release; someone transferred to another county or to state prison receives a check. Read the jail guide's money section

Chamberlain Creek camp is closed

Chamberlain Creek Conservation Camp #17 is closed. The fire camp was deactivated in December 2020. Do not travel to its former location at 15800 State Highway 20, Fort Bragg, and do not send mail or money there.

Bail, release, probation and parole

Bail

Bail can be posted in cash, by certified check, by money order or with a bail bond. Personal checks are not accepted. Make a certified check or money order payable to the Court of Jurisdiction. Release timing

The jail does not release anyone from 10:00 p.m. to 8:30 a.m. Booking can take several hours. A person arrested while under the influence stays until they are no longer under the influence. Bail releases can take longer if the person has already been moved to a housing unit, and delays in getting paperwork from the courts slow release. After a court appearance, release usually comes two to four hours after the person returns from court. Home Detention and Work Release: (707) 463-4092. Work Furlough: (707) 463-4271.
