The first days after release

Arrange a place to go, continuing care, transportation and the next required appointment before the person leaves custody.

  1. 01Before release: make a plan.
  2. 02First day: cover the essentials.
  3. 03Next days: connect to services.

One number for coordinated local help

JCOD’s Justice Connect Support Center connects people affected by the justice system and their families with services. Explain the release location, where the person expects to live, immediate transportation or housing needs, and any medical or behavioral-health follow-up. Ask for the provider’s name, contact and next step before ending the call.

Every day, 6 a.m.–11 p.m. Pacific. Referrals do not guarantee a bed, ride or program opening.

02

The first-day checklist

  • A confirmed destination and permission to stay there; a backup if the first arrangement falls through.
  • A ride and a working callback number. Plan for a late departure and for someone who may not have a phone.
  • Release papers, identification or the steps to replace it, and a record of money and property still to collect.
  • Medication instructions and supply information from the releasing clinical team, a pharmacy and a follow-up appointment. Ask about continuity before the supply runs out.
  • Food, water, clothing, a charged phone or charger and a manageable plan for the first night.

04

Continue health coverage and treatment

Ask the releasing clinical team how to obtain the medication list, discharge instructions and follow-up contact. Use Justice Connect for care connections and help identifying benefit or treatment services. Explain if the person has no ID, no phone or no stable address so the referral can account for that.

D.O.O.R.S. offers benefits-establishment support. For an actual benefits application or eligibility decision, use the responsible benefits agency. Jail411 does not determine Medi-Cal, CalFresh, General Relief or disability eligibility.

05

Keep supervision and court obligations clear

Use the exact office, date, deadline and conditions on the release paperwork. Probation, state parole and a pretrial program are different assignments. A referral to reentry services does not replace a required report or court appearance. If paperwork conflicts or you cannot reach the office, contact the assigned attorney or supervising office promptly and keep a record of the attempt.
