Start with the system, then confirm the facility.

A directory record identifies a place. It does not confirm where a particular person is held.

California prison, yard and camp closures

California's state prison system, CDCR (the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation), has closed prisons, fire camps and yards inside prisons as the number of people in state prison went down. It has also ended all of its prison contracts outside California and all of its for-profit contract prisons.

When a prison closes, no one is released early. CDCR moves each person to another prison that fits their housing and security needs. Find where the person is now

Planned closure

FacilityDateWhat changed
California Rehabilitation Center (CRC)planned by fall 2026Open now.

If the person was at a closed facility

  1. Find where they are now.

Search CDCR's inmate locator, CIRIS, by last name or CDCR number. It is updated daily.

Search CIRIS (opens in a new tab)

If you cannot find the person, call CDCR's Identification Unit at (916) 445-6713. For a common name, have their date of birth ready.

  2. Before you send mail or money, confirm where they are now (step 1).

    Address every letter with:

    • the person's full name and CDCR number
    • the prison's name
    • their housing unit or the prison's P.O. Box (the P.O. Box is preferred)
    • city, CA and ZIP code

The mailing address for people held at a prison is usually different from the prison's street address.

  3. Their program credits moved with them.

Credits earned in self-help, education and job-training programs at a closed prison transfer with the person, and they can finish courses they had started.

  4. Phone calls.

Only the person in prison can place a call. Calls from a California state prison are free and last up to 15 minutes.

What these records mean

Directory inventory is not an official operating count.

Jail411 groups canonical facility records using reviewed public classes. Classification and status evidence can be incomplete or change over time.

Current and historical stay separate. Closed records remain discoverable without appearing as current operations. A missing closure date is not proof that a facility is open.

ICE stays separate. Immigration detention uses its own directory and locator system. Internal unresolved records never become a public “Other” category.

Readiness: LIMITED. This page reports Jail411's normalized inventory and does not claim a complete official jurisdiction total.

Clear information.
Clear boundaries.

Jail411 is an independent information resource for families and friends. We are not a government agency, jail operator, law firm or live custody-records service.

Can Jail411 tell me if someone is in custody right now?

No. Jail411 does not hold live custody records. Use the official locator for the county, state, federal or ICE system that has the person; start here if you do not know which.

Does posting bond mean the person comes home?

Not always. A probation or parole hold, another county's warrant or an immigration detainer can keep someone in custody after bond is posted. Ask the jail what holds are on the booking before you pay.

What should I confirm before visiting?

The person's current facility, the visiting schedule, approval requirements, accepted identification and arrival instructions. Check the facility page and its official sources before you travel.

What if I find something that needs correcting?

Send us the page and the detail that needs attention. Include the official source when you have one. Do not send private booking documents or other sensitive personal information.
