Before you open an account, check what it pays for.

Phone credit, messaging, commissary and packages may use different accounts. Start with the facility and the service you actually need.

Keep the transaction and support details.

Confirm the current location.

A provider used at an earlier facility may not work after a transfer. Use the current facility’s instructions and confirm the identifying number required for the transaction.

Match the account to the purpose.

Before paying, check whether the account covers calls, messages, commissary or another service. Do not assume a deposit reaches every account associated with the person. Review the provider’s charges, limits and refund instructions.

Keep a useful payment note.

Save the date, provider, intended account and transaction reference in a place your family can find. Keep passwords, full card numbers and bank details out of shared notes. Save the provider’s support contact in case the payment does not appear.

Coordinate before another person pays.

A short update can prevent two relatives from paying for the same thing. Agree who is handling the next step, record what was completed and check the account’s status through the approved provider. Your own notes record what you enter; they do not show a live account balance.
